Title: Prefixes & Suffixes


Grade Levels: 3rd – 4th
Curriculum Areas:  Language Arts
Measurable Objectives:  The students will be able to identify words with prefixes and
suffixes
 The students will be able to use words with prefixes and
suffixes in their own writing.
LA Content Standards: ~ {LA.3.1.1} Decode words using knowledge of base words, root
words, and common prefixes and suffixes
~ {LA.3.1.4} Demonstrate knowledge of the meanings of common
prefixes and suffixes
~ {LA.4.1.1} Use understanding of base words, roots, prefixes,

Procedures:  Discuss together the meaning of prefixes and suffixes using
Page 1 of the attached “Prefix.Suffix” Notebook file.
 Working together, discuss page 2 of the Notebook file.
Discuss how the meaning of the word changes when you add a
prefix or suffix.
 Pages 3-4, allow students to come to the Smartboard to use
their knowledge of prefixes and suffixes to the definition for
each work and to create as many words as possible using
prefixes and suffixes.
 Read aloud "Mr. Friendly and the Snowflake Cookies"

 Have the students identify the words that have prefixes and
suffixes by coming to the Smartboard to circle the words
that have prefixes and suffixes.
 Allow the students to add a finish to the story and use at
least five words that possess a prefix or a suffix.
 Extra Practice: Use the BBC Skills wise Internet sites to
reinforce the lesson.
Suffixes Prefixes
Materials:  Pencil and paper
Assessment:  The students will identify at least 90% of the prefixes and
suffixes in a story, “Mr. Friendly and the Snowflake Cookies”
 The students will finish the ending of the story using at least
five words that have prefixes and suffixes.
