CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background and justification of the project

Patola scientifically known as (Luffa cylindrica) belong to the family

cucurbitaceae. The family is mainly tropical and sub-tropical consisting of

climbing and scrambling herbs with either simple or branched tendrils. The

leaves are oval, simple, and deeply five to seven lobed-dentate, dark green

and frequently hairy. It grows well in a well-drained soil that is rich in

organic waste. The fruits are smooth and cylindrical shaped with white

flesh. The length of the fruit is one to two feet and young fruit is used as a

cooked vegetable and the mature fruits are the source of the spongy

reticulated material known as the domestic loofah.

Patola originated in asia and the united states is the major market and

imports millions of loofah from asia ech year. The fibre of Brazilian sponge-

gourds (luffa cylindrica) was chemically characterized in order to improve

the fibre properties to enhance its large scale commercial utilization.

(Tanobe et al., 2005)

Patola contains nutrients such as dietary fiber, Vitamin C, ribloflavin, zinc,

thiamine, iron and magnesium. The juice is a natural remedy for jaundice.

The leaves are applauding locally in splenitis, hemorrhoids and leprosy.

The juice of the leaves is also used as an external application to sores and

bites of venomous animals.loofah will gently remove the surface layer of

dead skin, leaving the skin smooth and conditioned. Loofah can be used as

body sponge in the shower, but it should be allowed to dry out between

uses. In the kitchen, loofh makes a great abrsive sponge for removing

stubborn food particles from dishes and counter tops. (Department of

Agriculture, High Value Crops Development Program.)
