FORTH YEAR STUDENTS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING

ON:

9/04/2018

AT:

ODEC,Universiti Malaysia Sabah

1.0 Introduction

The main objective for conducting beach cleaning is to raise the public awareness for
the environmental issues, particularly about improper waste disposal and also the
cleanliness on beach area. As referring to the report of Journal of Ocean Cleanup in
2013, the most common trashes that are being disposed around the beach area are
plastic bag, cigarette butt, glass fragments, leftovers, and papers. Besides, the
contaminated beach area will also affecting the health risks like skin rashes.

Trash-induced marine pollution has been a subject of a number of wildlife

documentaries for years in our society in which each and every one of these segments
has brought a huge light among the public to start taking action to help make their
beaches healthier and safe for all marine wildlife. While many coastal towns have taken
action to require city dumps to collect trash from the beaches and relocate to dumps
that are away from beaches, the pollution sadly, still continues. By taking part in these
annual beach clean-ups, it will definitely raising the awareness for the importance of
beach cleaning and it also leaving a great example to others on how to reduce marine
debris in the seas and allowing wildlife to remain safe from pollution.

Hence, this Beach Cleaning event is being proposed with the main objective of raise
awareness across a wide audience. Throughout the activity, participants will be able to
understand the responsibilities of professional environmental engineering solutions in
societal contexts by applying environmental knowledge in places that need for
sustainability. Besides, students are able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding
of engineering and management principles and apply these to manage projects and in
multidisciplinary environments.

2.0 Objectives
1. To raise the awareness of citizen regarding to the impact of litter on nature.
2. To provide a clean and better environment for beach user.
3. To build team spirit and cooperation among participants.

2
3.0 Scope of Work

Before the beach cleaning activity is carried out

1. Divide task to each committee

2. Set a location, date, and estimate number of participants
3. Plan on the activities that will be carried out during beach cleaning
4. Find sponsorship for the activity and as part of in cooperate with local authorities like
Jabatan Alam Sekitar, DBKK, and JPP to increase the awareness of nature
5. Poster will be made in order to get attraction from UMS students

During the Beach Cleaning activity

1. The debris like plastic, tree branches or glass and plastic bottles will be clean along the
beach.
2. Emptying the rubbish bins that are located on sanded areas on the beach
3. Try to removal of seaweed from the beach and around drains outpouring onto the
sanded area of beach
4. Free gift will be given for the group that collects more rubbish as a encouragement
5. Rubbish collection will be divided into two types as recycle and non-recycle items. In
cooperation with local authorities like Jabatan Alam Sekitar and DBKK, the plastics will
be provided and the non-recycle items collected will be thrown into the lorries provided
by DBKK which located at housing area for proper throwing and the recycled items will
be measured in weights and sell to Tze-Ji (NGO) as one of the way to gain profit from
the activity.

After the beach cleaning activity

1. Final report for the activity will be submitted

2. data collection of recycle items are tabulated as results and discussion in the report
3. Certificates will be provided of every participants and local authorities who include in the
activity as appreciation for the environmental protect effort.

3
4.0 Implementation and Strategy
Beach cleaning is a good activity that should be joined by university students to educate
students to save our environment among students. This activity is meant to raise
awareness of importance of responsibilities of human beings of taking correct action in
handling rubbish or disposal. In order to build up the interest of students joining this
activity, a challenge is being implemented in this activity – Treasure Hunt.

The Treasure Hunt is being designed in such a way that students can enjoy finding clues
to accomplish treasure. Mysterious riddles will be given as challenges to the students.
The price for the treasure should be attractive enough for student to willing to
participate. While treasure hunting, the students are also required to collect rubbish
according to a list that will be given to them. The amount of rubbish collected according
to list will be counted as credit to their treasure hunting.

By blending treasure hunting into beach cleaning, this activity is not only beneficial to
the environment but also students. This is because students can undergo team building
and understand the importance of team work. This activity will help students to socialize
and communicate more on face to face. Besides, this treasure hunt will practice
student’s brain and enhance critical thinking.

Meanwhile, for easiness in collecting rubbish, gloves and plastic bags are provided to
each group. The gloves are also meant for hygiene and protection against glass shards.
Meanwhile, if the rubbish is recyclable, the disposal should be segregated and separated
according to types such as glass, paper and plastic. This separation is to reduce rubbish
and recycle the disposal that will save our environment.
