Project Scope - Description of Client
We are working with Kelsey Wales, a special needs Kelsey wants her students to be able to have the
instructor, working at Broomfield Heights Middle middle school experience that all students look
School. forward to: getting to have their own locker.
Project Scope - Description of Problem to
Solve
● Students Ruffin and Dylan have limited control of their hands
○ Cannot use traditional combination lock
● Design a way for Ruffin to be able to open a locker without fine motor skills
Design Alternatives: Synopsis of Client
Interview (9/12/18)

● Ablenet inc switches that allow convenience for people with disabilities
● Very visual unlocking, must have feedback
● Different types of modular switches
● Light, proximity, touch switches/buttons
● Locker modifications:
- Fitted is best.
- Modifications would be okay depending on the extent
- Small holes might be okay
● Limited mobility and strength
Project Scope - Client Design Requirements
and Constraints

Requirements:

● Must be compatible with Ablenet Switch

● Must be visually aesthetic for the user
○ Include other visual or auditory feedback besides locker opening

Constraints:

● The number of modifications to the locker must be minimal

● The system must be robust and use little energy
● Small amount of force needed to press a button
Design Alternative: Range of Possible
Solutions

Modular

● Gears
● Solenoid

Non-Modular

● Gears
● Solenoid
Design Alternatives: Evaluation of
Alternatives

The team weighed all the different aspects.

Design Alternatives: Evaluation of
Alternatives

The team made a decision using the trade studies.

Design Alternatives: Details of Final Design
Choice

● The design will have gears that will be visible to the user and will have visual/auditory feedback.
● The user will be able to plug in any button that has a 3.5 mm auxiliary plug.
Concept of Operations
Timeline/Project Management
Conclusions

● We are Project L.E.O.

● Being able to use a locker in middle school is an important social interaction
that should be available to everyone
● Our goal is to design an opening mechanism for a locker for our client that
everyone can use even with physical or mental limitations
● Our project will include electronic and mechanical mechanisms
