First Grade Geometry Review Lesson Plan

Grade Level & Subject Area:

1st Grade Mathematics

Standards:

CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.G.A.1
Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus
non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess
defining attributes.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.G.A.2

Compose two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles, half-circles, and

quarter-circles) or three-dimensional shapes (cubes, right rectangular prisms, right circular
cones, and right circular cylinders) to create a composite shape, and compose new shapes
from the composite shape.1

CCSS.Math.Content.1.G.A.3 Partition circles and rectangles into two and four equal shares,
describe the shares using the words halves, fourths, and quarters, and use the phrases half of,
fourth of, and quarter of. Describe the whole as two of, or four of the shares. Understand for
these examples that decomposing into more shares creates smaller shares.
Theme/Scaffolding of Lessons:

Exploring Shapes, 2D and 3D and Parts of Shapes Concepts

This lesson is a mid unit lesson from a unit of Geometry lessons. Students should have an
understanding of how to explain shapes using their attributes, composing shapes and partitioning
them.

Time: 1 day, 45 minute lesson

What do the students already know?:

Students should already know the names of the shapes (rectangles, squares, trapezoids, triangles,
half-circles, and quarter-circles) and be able to identify shapes by visually looking at them.
Students have explored shapes and whether they are two or three dimensional. They have also
worked with equal parts and fractions in circles and rectangles.
Objective (What are the students’ going to accomplish):

Students will be able to answer question based on their comprehension from the unit about
shapes. The subjects include 2D and 3D shapes, composing shapes and attributes. They are able to
describe the shape using the terms halves, fourths and quarters.

Materials:
Jeopardy Powerpoint
White Board
Chairs

Procedure:

Day 1:
I will begin by having the class divided into teams. Students will take turns answering
questions. If an answer is correct the team then adds that amount of money onto their score. The
team that has the highest score at the end gets break.

Assessment:
The formative assessment of students will be based on the observation during the game,
classmate discussion and other table talk during the activity. The summative assessment will be at
the end of our Geometry unit which focuses on shape attributes and fractions. Students will be
monitored based on their performance in the team today.

A Brief Description Of The Entire Lesson - Plus Any Additional Information to be Included:

Students will be introduced to the teacher created powerpoint game show called Jeopardy.
Students will participate in teams to help support one another in the vocabulary and learning.
Students will write down one fact that they remember :)
