Sydney Nursing School scholarships

Scholarships recognise talent in our students and open doors to new opportunities. You can
apply for scholarships through the university, external organisations or with us at Sydney
Nursing School.

We have a number of scholarships available to nursing and more broadly, health students.
The ARC Linkage Project Grant, Beth Spence, Britton Craigie, John and Diana Hutchison
Merit Prize for Nursing, Royal Freemason's Benevolent Institution, Seashells Travel
Scholarship and Skellern Family Foundation scholarships are aimed at postgraduate students,
while the newly established Susan Wakil Scholarships target a broad range of undergraduate,
postgraduate, rural and indigenous students.

Scholarships range in value between $2,500 to $87,500 with the added bonus of being a
fabulous addition to your professional CV.

It's not all about the money though, talented health students who receive Hoc Mai
scholarships gain international experience by undertaking a unit of study in Vietnam.

University scholarships
The University offers hundreds of scholarships to future and current students from a range of
backgrounds, geographical areas and courses. Check out the scholarships website for the
most up to date information and closing dates.
ARC Linkage Project Grant

Details: Two 3-year PhD scholarships funded by an ARC Linkage Project Grant and
collaborating industry partners (the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency
(AHPRA) and the NSW Health Professionals Council Authority (HPCA))
For: PhD students of the Faculty of Law, Medicine, Health Sciences and Nursing
Beth Spence scholarship

The Beth Spence Scholarship provides support for a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) candidate
within the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery. Applications are open to currently enrolled
PhD candidates, as well as those yet to submit an application for PhD study.
Britton Craigie scholarship

The Britton-Craigie Scholarship provides financial assistance to one female PhD student to
support the completion of their thesis. The scholarship will provide support to the value of
AUD $15,000 and may be used to top-up a completed Australian/University Postgraduate
Award (A/UPA).

This scholarship is now closed.


Hoc Mai Scholarship
Details: There is no application form for this scholarship. Application consists of: a resume
with a recent photo; two letters of reference (one from a clinical tutor from Sydney Nursing
School); an essay – ‘What I would like to learn about health care delivery in Viet Nam and
how I plan to do it’ in less than 1000 words; vaccination records as per Ministry of Health
policy
For: Students enrolled in the Master of Nursing (Graduate Entry) and combined degrees
(years 3 and 4 only)
John and Diana Hutchison Merit Prize for Nursing

Details: This is the first philanthropically-funded merit prize, offered for the first time in
Semester 2, 2013 with the intention for the prize to be offered in perpetuity.
For: All domestic students enrolled in their final semester of the Master of Nursing
(Graduate Entry) full time will be automatically assessed. The top 5 high achievers will then
be contacted and asked to provide a brief statement about how they would use this prize to
either further support their studies or travel to further their interest in nursing. The final
decision will be made based on a combination of both results and this statement.
Value: A one-off payment of $2500. The intention of this prize is to provide the recipient
with an opportunity to travel to further their interest in nursing or to further support their
study.
Royal Freemason's Benevolent Institution

The Royal Freemasons’ Benevolent Institution scholarships provide support for two
commencing Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students undertaking research in the area of aged
and end of life care at Sydney Nursing School.

Seashells Travel Scholarship


The Seashells Travel Scholarship was established to support pre-registered nursing students
study overseas. The scholarship is open to Australian citizens or permanent residents who
satisfy the general eligibility criteria for the PhD at Sydney Nursing School.
Skellern Family Foundation scholarship

This scholarship has been generously donated by the Skellern family to assist early to mid-
career nurses and midwives to undertake or complete a PhD. The intention of the scholarship
is to provide financial support to working nurses and midwives who wish to enrol in full-time
PhD study, or those who wish to move from part-time to full-time study to complete their
PhD. The scholarship is to the value of AUD $30,000 per annum for a maximum of five
years (subject to satisfactory progress). Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) applicants
may apply, however please note the value of the scholarship will be adjusted to comply with
the APA award rules.
Susan Wakil Scholarships

Details: A total of 12 Susan Wakil Scholarships are offered annually, by Sydney Nursing
School to support the education of deserving students undertaking both undergraduate and
postgraduate degrees.

Eligible students include:


Undergraduate students

 Bachelor of Nursing (Advanced Studies) students from the greater Sydney region x 3
 Bachelor of Nursing (Advanced Studies) students from rural or regional locations
relocating to Sydney x 2
 Bachelor of Nursing (Advanced Studies) student of Aboriginal or Torres Strait
Islander heritage relocating to Sydney x 1

Postgraduate students

 Advanced Learning Masters students from the greater Sydney region x 3


 Advanced Learning Masters students from rural or regional locations relocating to
Sydney x 3

Applications for the Susan Wakil Scholarships are now open for students commencing in
Semester 1, 2018. Applications close at 5pm on 12 January 2018.
