Vodacom set to significantly improve voice and data traffic after leasing additional Fiber

Optics Cable Infrastructure from the National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB)

24 September 2018 – The National ICT Broadband Backbone (NICTBB) has today signed a
contract with Vodacom Tanzania PLC to allow the latter to use the government owned fiber
optics cable infrastructure to enhance connectivity in rural Tanzania at an event held today
at the TTCL headquarters in Dar es Salaam.

The deal inked by Tanzania Telecommunication Company Limited (TTCL) Director General,
Waziri Kindamba and Vodacom Acting Managing Director Hendi Hisham, is set to improve
Vodacom’s voice and data traffic across lake, central, northern and southern regions of
Tanzania in a bid to transform the country into a knowledge based society through the
application of ICT.

Vodacom Tanzania PLC has been a key stakeholder in the usage of NICTBB infrastructure since
2012, with capacity leasing contract worth USD 34.6 million signed in the period between
2012 and 2017. Over the 5 years TTCL have worked with the telecommunication company in
the country for the use of fiber optics infrastructure as a key stakeholder in the use of NICTBB.

This year, Vodacom will be leasing the NICTBB capacity extending countrywide across 7,560
km for 10 years as per the contract worth $11.2 million (VAT exclusive). This makes total
contract signed between two parties in the past years to USD 45.8 million.

The fibre optics cable are designed for long distance, high performance data transferring and
that technology will be available to Vodacom subscribers all over Tanzania.

“You can have the backbone, but you must be able to connect to people, otherwise it is a
waste. We plan to enhance usage of ICT applications for sustainable socio-economic
development. We are happy to go on this journey with Vodacom,” says Dr. Jim Yonazi, Deputy
Permanent Secretary Communication – Ministry of Works, Transport and Communications.
Stressing that the efficient use of fibre optics infrastructure can minimize the gap in
connectivity in rural parts of Tanzania to create equal access to broadband across the country.

Expanding their investment, Vodacom plans to assist the government through efficient use of
fiber optics cables over the course of the next few years combining their telecommunication
expertise with the existing foundation of government infrastructure.

“We are excited to witness the transformative effects this will bring to the Tanzanian people
and look forward to connecting even more Tanzanians,” said TTCL DG Waziri Kindamba. “We
are entering an optimistic time for collaboration between our two parties” he added.
