The opposition’s main role is to question the government of the day

and hold them accountable to the public. Democracy without the

institution of opposition is no democracy. That becomes one-party
dictatorship. If there is no opposition to the ruling class then one can
assume, beyond doubt, that there is foul play at work.
More so when the economy is in a tail-spin and the new government is
trying to grapple with the situation knowing not where to start and how
to start plugging the holes and creating new income generating
avenues.
The president later defined Iran, which does not have nuclear weapons,
as “a regime that was sowing chaos, death and destruction.”

KARACHI:

The Federal Public Service Commission (FPSC) announced the written result of the competitive
examination for this year 2018 a week ago. Once again dismal performances and poor scores
have tainted the picture. A total of 11,887 candidates appeared for the exam out of which only
569 students have passed the written examination. The ratio of successful candidates has dropped
over the past four years with 3.3% in 2014, 3.1% in in 2015, 2.06% in 2016, 3.3% in 2017 with a
slight increase for the ongoing year with 4.7%.
The disappointing result is an alarming situation for the Higher
Education Commission (HEC) and the Federal Public Service
Commission (FPSC). The quarters concerned must take notice of poor
CSS results and constitute a committee to identify the faults and
loopholes in the system. Without meaningful reforms in the civil
services, it is impossible to revamp the bureaucratic structure of the
institutions of the country.

Undoubtedly, the Civil Services Examination have been the most

competitive examination in the country for years, however,
deteriorating results have shown the impact in the form of poor
performance of the appointed officers in government offices. To mend
the functioning of these offices it is important that the entire process is
mended.
“It is true that there is a real threat to our region and to international
peace and security: that threat is the Trump administration’s sense of
entitlement to destabilize the world along with rogue accomplices in
our region,” Mohammad Javad Zarif said. “The US must start acting
like a normal state.”
An old saying from South India goes something like this; “If you go out in a jungle looking for a tiger, be
sure you want to see one”. The wisdom in this simple but powerful sentence is profound. Often, we set
ourselves goals and targets without really knowing what these entail; how to get there and whether we
really want or need to get there, in the first place?
