THE EFFECTS OF STUDY HABITS ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF

STUDENTS IN PUBLIC SECONDARY SCHOOLS
ABSTRACT
In the fields of education and psychology, learning has been discovered all over the world to be a highly complex problem.
Several researchers have tried to explain it differently and the description of each is partially true. Over the years, researches on
factors that influence academic performance of students have attracted the interest of not only researchers but concern of
teachers, counsellors, psychologists, and school administrators as well. This researcher attempts to find out the Effects of Study
Habits of Students in Public Secondary Schools in Chikun Local Government Area, Kaduna State and analyze relationship
between study habits and academic performance and various other factors that affect study habits. It is generally believed that a
student learns effective study habits in school. So students are generally assumed to have effective study habits, but the
environment of school is very different and the need of effective study habits is even more at college level as compared to
school. So, this research consists of details about why effective study habits are needed in Secondary Schools in order to learn
and eventually score better. This research used questionnaire, observation and data presentation in its work based on the
number of the respondent of the questionnaires administered. The instrument is made up of 5 items and it consists of 20 items
which formed the main part of the questionnaire. It is designed along 5 point Likert type scale; ranging from Strongly Agreed
(SA), Agreed (A), Undecided (U), Disagreed (D) and Strongly Disagreed (SD). The questions were meant to elicit responses on
The Effects of Study Habits on Academic Performance of Students in Public Secondary Schools in Chikun Local Government
Area. The work also moved further to the finding, the conclusion, the summary and the recommendations. Due to the finding, it
is observed that some responses are more effective than others. It means that most students do ideally follow Effective Study
Habits. In conclusion, students should not be condemned but be encouraged and linked to teachers who they can establish
intellectual companionship that will help improve Study Habits. It was however recommended that teachers and parents should
identify good study habits and find ways and means of enhancing them among students. Furthermore, Government should
provide ways of improving Study Habits in Secondary Schools e.g., by providing well equipped library buildings and facilities.

IMPACT OF STUDY HABIT ON ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF STUDENTS

CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION

BACKGROUND TO THE STUDY

In the field of education & psychology, learning has been discovered all over the world to be a highly complex
problem. Several researchers have tried to explain it differently and the description of each is partially true.
Over the years, researches on factors that influence academic performance of students have attracted the interest
of not only researchers but concern of teachers, counselors, psychologists, and school administrators as well.
Study method is the knowledge and application of effective study skills or techniques by students. The term
study habit refers to the way in which students’ study either systematically, efficiently or inefficiently. In line
with what has been said above, we can deduce that good study habit will definitely yield positive academic
performances and achievement and also inefficient or poor study habit leads to academic failure. Students’
attitude and study habit towards any subject has been described as a function of passion coupled with their
belief on that particular which has a long way to go on their academic performances.

In Nigeria, many factors have been highlighted to influence the ability of students to cultivate effective and
efficient study habit. Such factors include; state of health, motivation, anxiety and state of mind, conducive and
suitable environment for studying, availability of textbooks and well equipped libraries. In a research carried
out by (Nuthana & Yenagi, 2009) the causes of poor academic performance among Nigeria students were
thoroughly examined. In which some of these factors identified include; low student’s intellectual ability,
achievement motivation, lack of goals, low self-esteem, low socio-economic status of the family, poverty and
poor study habit as a major factor.

A survey was carried out in some selected schools in Nigeria to identify some major causes of low academic
performances in students. Some of the problems identified include inadequate teachers, problem of inadequate
facilities in the school, problems caused by poor parental background, unfavorable government policies and low
educational sector funding (Ajila and Olutola 2007). Likewise, Ichado (1998) also dispute environment from
which the student comes from play a major role in influencing study habits which invariably affect academic
performance. The concept of study habit is broad as it combines nearly all other sub-topics under it such as
study attitude, study method, and study skill. In a research conducted by Allport (1960), it was argued that
attitude toward study by drafting a good study pattern can greatly contribute to students’ academic performance.
Successful learners all over the world are said to have adopted positive attitude towards study and are time
conscious over what they have to do.

According to Hussain (2000) study habit refers to predispositions which students have developed towards
private readings through a period of time. According to him, study habit is a gateway to successful achievement
in studies.
A research was carried out by Morahan (1999), he found out that male and female have different ways of
studying (study habit). In this study, he discovered that the male student took up courses that have more of logic
and sciences while female student were attracted to simpler courses and such it is in line with their passion
which require different study habit and might have a positive effect on academic performance of students.
Positive academic performance and achievement depends upon the student’s ability to schedule his time, the
plan of his study, the habit of concentration, note –taking, mental review, over learning, the judicious
application of whole and part method massed and distributed learning and so on. In other words, positive
academic performance is a function of proper study habits and skills. Since study habits are an important factor
in learning, it becomes necessary to investigate into its nature.

Chapter 1THE PROBLEMA. Introduction

The extent of student’s learning in academics may bedetermined by the grades a student
earns for a period of learning has beendone. It is believed that a grade is a primary
indicator of such learning. If alearner earns high grades it is concluded that they may also
have learned alot while low grades indicate lesser learning. However, many experiences andstudies
found out that there are also several factors that would account for thegrades. No single factor can be
definitely pointed out as predicting grades. Ithas been an interplay of so many factors – gender, IQ,
study habits, age, year level, parent’s educational attainment, social status, number of siblings,
birthorder, etc. In fact, almost all of existing environmental and personal factorsare a
variable of academic performance. However, at this point in time, the researchers would like
to investigate the possible relationship of study habitsand the factors affecting it to the academic
achievement of under graduatee d u c a t i o n s t u d e n t s o f X a v i e r U n i v e r s i t y -

compelling motivationfor the researchers to conduct this study.

Family background.

Study habits contribute significantly in the development of knowledge and perceptual

capacities. Study habits tell a person that how much he will learn and how far he wants

to go, and how much he wants to earn. These all could be decided with the help of one‟s

study habits, throughout the life. Therefore it is assumed that study habits are

correlates of scholastic or academic achievement. In this study, the association between

study habits and academic performance of students is examined. Sample of 270 students

were taken from two colleges Govt. Allama Iqbal College for Women, Sialkot and

Govt. Technical College for boys, Sialkot. The association between study habits and

academic performance was checked by using chi-square test. The results showed that

there is significant relationship between study habits and academic performance of the

student

Effect of Guidance Services on Study Attitudes, Study Habits and Academic Achievement of Secondary
School
Students Abid Hussain Ch.* Abstract The substantive aim of the study was to examine the effect of guidance
services on students’ study attitudes, study habits and academic achievement. An experimental study was
devised for the purpose. A guidance programme for secondary school students was developed by the researcher.
An experiment was conducted to explore the effectiveness of guidance services in terms of improvement in
students’ study attitudes, study habits and academic achievement. Ten null hypotheses were tested to explore
the effect of guidance services on students’ study habits, study attitudes and academic achievement in five
subjects. All the hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The results of the study indicated that the
guidance services have significant effect on the students’ study attitude, study habits and academic achievement

Performance of College Students: Impact of Study Time and Study Habits

Abstract
Available empirical research investigating the relationship that study time has with college student
performance has seen mixed results. Positive, negative, and no relationship between the two
variables has been reported (G. A. Krohn & C. M. O'Conner, 2005Krohn, G. A. and O'Conner, C.
M.2005. Student effort and performance over semester. Journal of Economic Education, 36: 3–
29.[Taylor & Francis Online], [Web of Science ®], [Google Scholar]; A. G. Lahmers & C. Zulauf,
2000Lahmers, A. G. and Zulauf, C. 2000. The secret to academic success: Hours and hours of
study. Journal of College Student Development, 41: 545–554. [Google Scholar]; R. M. Schmidt,
1983Schmidt, R. M. 1983. Who maximizes what? Study in student time allocation. American
Economic Review, 73: 23–28.[Web of Science ®], [Google Scholar]). At a time when there is
overwhelming evidence that students are devoting less time to their studies (Higher Education
Research Institute, 2003Higher Education Research Institute. 2003. The official press release for the
American Freshmen 2002, Los Angeles: University of California. [Google Scholar]), it is critical for
educators who desire to encourage and motivate their students to engage in productive study
behavior to first understand the true nature of this relationship. The authors investigated the influence
of a third variable, study habits. Based on a sample of business students, results showed some study
habits had a positive direct relationship on student performance but others had a negative direct
relationship. Results also showed 1 study habit moderated the relationship between study time and
student performance positively, but another study habit moderated the relationship negatively.
Discussion of the findings, implications, and directions for further research are also provided.
