CHAPTER 1 System Specification

Introduction to the Axis System

Axis is a video controller system optimised for gaming, amusement and

other coin-operated applications. An Axis system comprises a Heber
designed main board fitted in an enclosure, and a backplane. Axis is an x86
based platform and runs the Linux operating system.

A Heber designed backplane or a customer designed backplane can be

used with an Axis system. The backplane provides connectivity for inputs
and outputs including audio, video, ethernet and serial communication
interfaces. The backplane also provides the power supply connections to
the Axis main board.

The Axis system is housed in an aluminium enclosure to assist with heat

dissipation.

The Axis system incorporates a Heber Security Device and a Smart Card
dongle which use Triple-DES encryption. The Triple-DES encryption system
is unique to each Axis Customer and can be linked to the Axis program and
to other unique hardware identifiers such as ethernet MAC address or
electronic serial numbers, providing a game-to-hardware locked platform.

This User Manual includes the Axis system hardware specification. Details
of all the inputs and outputs, user interfaces, and user options are also
described.

Clock Battery
A CR2450N lithium battery is fitted into a coin cell holder on the Axis main
board. The battery is used as a backup power supply for the Axis system
Real Time Clock. Ensure a battery of the same type is used if a replacement
is fitted.

Main Board System Components

PIC Microcontoller
A PIC microcontroller is fitted on the Axis main board (Ident U24).

Refer to the Axis Software User Manual for further information.

System Expansion
Axis has system expansion options for:
• PCI cards
• EEPROM

A reserved 40 way DIL socket is also fitted.

Ident Type Description
P3 PCI slot Expansion Slot for Heber Riser Card
CNR1 46 way CNR Socket CNR Socket for Heber Riser Card
U29 8 way DIL Socket EEPROM Socket
U55 40 way DIL Socket Reserved for expansion

PCI Expansion
A PCI slot is fitted on the Axis main board. A Heber Axis riser card can be
fitted into the PCI slot which enables two standard PCI cards and one
custom Heber PCI card to be fitted within the Axis enclosure.
For further information, see “Axis Riser Card” on page 56.

EEPROM
An EEPROM socket is fitted on the Axis main board which enables
EEPROM devices to be fitted. EEPROM can be used for non-volatile
memory storage.

25
CHAPTER 5 Axis System Enclosure

Enclosure Design
The Axis aluminium enclosure is designed to dissipate heat from the main
board.

Axis System Mounting

The Axis enclosure is designed to be mounted in any orientation within a
gaming machine cabinet. Sufficient space should be allowed for connectors
and cableforms that are connected to the backplane.

Gaming Machine Cabinet Mounting

The Axis system, when used with the Heber Axis vertical backplane,
requires a space within a gaming machine cabinet of at least 150mm high,
260mm wide and 205mm deep, when the system is mounted horizontally.

Gaming Machine Cabinet Operating Conditions

The ambient temperature in the gaming machine cabinet should not be
below -10°C (14°F).The ambient temperature in the gaming machine
cabinet should not exceed 40°C (104°F).

The airflow around any ventilation holes in the gaming machine cabinet
should not be restricted.

CHAPTER 6 Axis System Backplane

Heber Axis Backplanes

Heber has designed two different backplane designs for use with the Axis
system:
• Axis vertical backplane
• Axis horizontal backplane

This section details both of these backplanes and provides detailed

information on connector types and pin outs.

Axis Vertical Backplane

The following connectors are fitted on the Heber Axis vertical backplane:

CHAPTER 7 Axis Riser Card

Riser Card Overview

The Axis PCI Riser Card can be fitted in the slot (P3) on the Axis main
board. The Heber PCI Riser Card has a PCI edge connector and custom
edge connector that enable easy fitting into the corresponding socket on the
Axis main board. The Heber PCI riser card allows two standard PCI
expansion cards and one Heber custom PCI expansion cards to be fitted
within the Axis enclosure.

A 40mm fan is fitted to the Axis Riser Card to assist with PCI card cooling.
The fan is connected to the 5V power supply connector on the riser card. If
increased cooling is required, the fan can be connected to the 12V power
supply connector on the riser card.

The Riser Card incorporates a security switch that detects when the lid is
removed from the Axis enclosure.
