CHAPTER 1 System Specification
The Axis system incorporates a Heber Security Device and a Smart Card
dongle which use Triple-DES encryption. The Triple-DES encryption system
is unique to each Axis Customer and can be linked to the Axis program and
to other unique hardware identifiers such as ethernet MAC address or
electronic serial numbers, providing a game-to-hardware locked platform.
This User Manual includes the Axis system hardware specification. Details
of all the inputs and outputs, user interfaces, and user options are also
described.

CPU
The Axis system uses the VIA Eden™ ESP 1GHz processor based on the
‘Nehemiah’ core with the following features:
• Front Side Bus speeds of up to 133MHz
• 64KB L2 cache memory
• Two large (64-KB each, 4-way) on-chip Level 1 caches
• MMX™-compatible multimedia instructions
• AMD-compatible 3DNow!™ Instructions (Model 7)
• SSE-compatible instructions (Model 9)

Memory
The Axis system is supplied with 256MB or 512MB of 144-pin SODIMM
SDRAM system memory (shared with the video controller). The system will
support a maximum of 512MB of system memory.

CHAPTER 3 Axis System I/O
Serial Communication
The Axis system provides 10 serial channels as standard; 2 from the South
Bridge chip at RS232 levels and 4 from a Quad UART package that can be
routed to combinations of the following serial interfaces:
• RS232
• RS485
• ccTalk
• TTL level
4 serial channels at TTL level are available from an additional QUAD UART
package that is fitted to the Axis main board.

SPI
Two Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI) ports are available for peripheral
expansion.
Ethernet
The onboard Intel® 82551 controller provides the Axis system with 10/100
Base-T Ethernet.
USB
The South Bridge on the Axis system provides 4 onboard USB V1.1 ports.
I2C
The Axis main board has an I2C bus allowing the connection of external I2C
devices.

Mass Storage
The following mass storage options are available for operating system and
game storage:
• 2 off Compact Flash Cards
• IDE Devices
Compact Flash
Two Compact Flash sockets are fitted to the front of the Axis enclosure.
Compact Flash cards can be used for operating system and game storage.
Compact Flash cards should only be used for flash memory storage when
used with an Axis system.
Compact Flash cards type 1 and 2 should only be used with an Axis system.
IDE Interfaces
Two 44 way IDE interfaces are fitted on the Axis main board which enable
IDE devices to be connected.
For further information on Axis Security, refer to the Security section in the
Axis Software User Manual.

Clock Battery
A CR2450N lithium battery is fitted into a coin cell holder on the Axis main
board. The battery is used as a backup power supply for the Axis system
Real Time Clock. Ensure a battery of the same type is used if a replacement
is fitted.
System Configuration
An 8 way DIL switch is fitted on the Axis main board. The DIL switch is
customer configurable.

through the front of the Axis enclosure:

PIC Microcontoller
A PIC microcontroller is fitted on the Axis main board (Ident U24).
System Expansion
Axis has system expansion options for:
• PCI cards
• EEPROM
PCI Expansion
A PCI slot is fitted on the Axis main board. A Heber Axis riser card can be
fitted into the PCI slot which enables two standard PCI cards and one
custom Heber PCI card to be fitted within the Axis enclosure.
For further information, see “Axis Riser Card” on page 56.
EEPROM
An EEPROM socket is fitted on the Axis main board which enables
EEPROM devices to be fitted. EEPROM can be used for non-volatile
memory storage.

CHAPTER 7 Axis Riser Card
A 40mm fan is fitted to the Axis Riser Card to assist with PCI card cooling.
The fan is connected to the 5V power supply connector on the riser card. If
increased cooling is required, the fan can be connected to the 12V power
supply connector on the riser card.
The Riser Card incorporates a security switch that detects when the lid is
removed from the Axis enclosure.
