Text : The Five Pillars of Islam + Iman or Faith

The 'Five Pillars' of Islam are the foundation of Muslim life:

 Faith or belief in the Oneness of Allah and the finality of the

prophethood of Muhammad (P.B.U.H)
 Establishment of the daily prayers;
 Concern for and almsgiving to the needy; 14
 Self-purification through fasting; ‫و‬
 The pilgrimage to Makkah for those who are able. 15
Iman or Faith
"There is no God but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."
This declaration of faith is called the Shahadah, a simple formula that all
the Muslims pronounce. The significance of this declaration is the belief
that the only purpose of life is to serve and obey Allah, and this is achieved
through the teachings and practices of the Last Prophet, Muhammad
(P.B.U.H)

Text: Salat or Prayer

Salat is the name for the obligatory prayers that are performed five times a
day, and are a direct link between the worshipper and Allah.

Prayers are performed at dawn, mid-day, late-afternoon, sunset and

nightfall, and thus determine the rythm of the entire day. These five
prescribed prayers contain verses from the Qur'an, and are said in Arabic,
the language of the Revelation. Personal supplications, however, can be 31
offered in one's own language and at any time.

Although it is preferable to worship together in a mosque, a Muslim may

pray almost anywhere, such as in fields, offices, factories and universities.
Sometimes, visitors to the Muslim world are struck by the centrality of
prayers in daily life.

Text : Zakat

Zakat : The Financial Obligation Upon Muslims

An important Pillar of Islam is that everything belongs to Allah, and that

wealth is therefore held by human beings in trust. The word Zakat means 15
both “purification” and “growth.” Our possessions are purified by setting
aside a proportion for those in need and for the society in general. Like
the pruning of plants, this cutting back balances and encourages new
growth.

An individual may also give as much as he or she pleases as sadaqa-h, and does so,
preferably in secret. Although this word can be translated as “voluntary charity”, it
has a wider meaning.
The Prophet (P B U H) said, “Even meeting your brother with a cheerful face is an
act of charity.” The Prophet(PBUH) also said: “Charity is a necessity for every
Muslim.” He was asked: “What if a person has nothing?” The Prophet (P B U H)
replied: “He should work with his own hands for his benefit and then give 15
something out of such earnings in charity.” The Companions of the Prophet (P B U
H) asked: “What if he is not able to work?” The Prophet (P B U H) said: “He
should help the poor and needy.” The Companions further asked : “What if he
cannot do even that?” The Prophet (P B U H) said: “He should urge others to do
good.” The Companions said: “What if he lacks that also?” The Prophet (P B U H)
said: “He should keep himself from doing evil. That is also an act of charity.”

Text : Sawm or Fasting

Every year in the month of Ramada-n, all Muslims fast from dawn until
sunset , abstaining from food, drink, and sexual intercourse.

Those who are sick or on a journey, and women who are menstruating, 31
pregnant or nursing, are permitted to break the fast and make up an
equal number of days later in the year when they are healthy and able.
Children begin to fast (and to observe prayers) from puberty, although
many start earlier.

Although fasting is beneficial to health, it is mainly a method of self-

purification and self-restraint. By cutting oneself from worldly comforts, even
for a short time, a fasting person focuses on the omnipresence of Allah. Allah 31
states in the Qur'an: "O you who believe! Fasting is prescribed for you as it was
prescribed to those before you that you may learn self-restraint." (Qur'an 2:183)

Text: Hajj
Hajj or Pilgrimage

The pilgrimage to Makkah (the hajj) is an obligation only for those who
are physically and financially able to do so. Nevertheless, over two
million people go to Makkah each year from every corner of the globe
providing a unique opportunity for those of different nations to meet one 14
another.

The annual hajj begins in the twelfth month of the Islamic lunar
calendar. Pilgrims wear special clothes: simple garments that strip away
distinctions of class and culture, so that all stand equal before Allah.

The rites of the hajj, which are of Ibrahamic origin, include going around the
Ka'bah seven times, and going seven times between the hills of Safa and Marwa
as did Hajar (Hajir, Ibrahim's wife) during her search for water. The pilgrims
later stand together on the wide plains of 'Arafat (a large expanse of desert
outside Makkah) and join in prayer for Allah's forgiveness, in what is often 14
thought as a preview of the Day of Judgement.

The close of the hajj is marked by the 'Id al Adha, which is celebrated by
Muslim communities everywhere.

Text : Jibril's Hadith

The Jibril’s Hadith - Essentials of Islam, Iman & Ihsan
Also from 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, there what he said, "While we
were sitting with the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless Him and grant Him
peace, one day a man came up to us . His clothes were extremely white , his hair
was extremely black, upon whom traces of travelling could not be seen, and
whom none of us knew, he sat down close to the Prophet, may Allah bless Him
and grant Him peace. He rested his knees upon His knees and placed his two
hands upon His thighs and said, 'Muhammad, tell me about Islam.' The
Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless Him and grant Him peace, said, 'Islam is
that you testify that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the
Messenger of Allah, and you practise the prayer, and you give the Zakat, and 28
you fast Ramadan, and you perform the hajj if you can do it.' He said, 'You have ‫و‬
told the truth,' and we were amazed at him asking the Prophet PBUH and [then]
telling Him that He told the truth. He said, 'Tell me about Iman.' He said, 'That 29
you affirm Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, and the Last Day, and
that you affirm the Decree, the good of it and the bad of it.' He said, 'You have
told the truth.' He said, 'Tell me about ihsan.' He said, 'That you worship Allah as
if you see Him, for if you don't see Him then truly He sees you.' He said, 'Tell
me about the Hour.' He said, 'The one asked about it knows no more than the one
asking.' He said, 'Then tell me about its tokens.' He said, 'That the female slave
should give birth to her mistress, and you see poor, naked, barefoot shepherds of
sheep and goats competing in making tall buildings.' He went away, and I
remained some time. Then He asked, 'Umar, do you know who the questioner
was?' I said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said, 'He was Jibril who
 came to you to teach you your religion'." Muslim narrated it.

Text : Active Citizenship
A good example of citizenship can be found in a small village not far from Fez,
in the Middle Atlas region of Morocco.
Prior to 2001, the majority of the children in that village had never seen a
school at a very young age. The children went to work in the fields. Water
was rare and very often far away. When the Mederasat.com foundation
decided to build a school there, the villagers donated the land and provided 31‫و‬30
much of the labour for construction. The school was built in the center of the
village with water supply provided by the drinking water unity ONEP .When
the doors of the school finally opened in 2001, one of the school's two
teachers, Abdeslam ,had to show the children how to operate the taps because
they had never used a water tap before . A representative of the foundation
met the villagers and she told them "We will finish the work and give you the
keys, because these are your walls, your land and your children".
