Subtopic: Three Basic Trigonometric Functions

Objective : • Solve right-angled triangles using the 3 trigonometric ratios

(level 1-direct questions)
• Solve word problems involving right-angled triangles (level 2)

(level 4)

1 Solve Right-angled triangles using Trigonometry Ratios

The three main functions in trigonometry are Sine, Cosine and Tangent. They
can represent the ratio (fraction) of one length over the other length.

Example 2
In the diagram, XWY is a straight line, ∠WYZ is a right angle, ∠YWZ =67.60,
YZ = 10 cm and XZ = 16 cm. A table of the trigonometrical ratios of 67.60 is also given.

2 Solve Word Problems involving Trigonometry Ratios
Example 1

A vertical mast is held by a 48 m long wire. The wire is attached to a point 32 m

up the mast. Draw a diagram and find the angle the wire makes with the mast.

Example 2

Wheelchair ramps must be no steeper than 10°. If a ramp starts 3 m away from
a door that is 0.25 m above the ground, will it be safe?

Example 3

A plane flying at 500km/h heads North. A wind blows from the West at 50 km/h.
(a) Find the actual direction the plane ends up heading on.
(b) Also calculate its final speed.

In the diagram, BDC = 900 , AB = 7 cm, cos ABˆ D = and D is the mid-point of
15
AC. Find
(a) the length of BD B
(b) the length of AC

(c) the value of tan BCD
(d) the area of ∆ABC .

Example 2

In triangle ABC, AC = 16cm, BC = 25cm and ∠ACB = 32⁰. Find

(a) the shortest distance from point A to line BC &
