Week 4 Glossary

Classroom Management

Classroom agenda - A classroom agenda is a list of classroom activities for that day, usually
written on the blackboard or on a poster in the order that the activities will be covered.

Classroom logistics - Classroom logistics involve all the practical arrangements needed to make
the classroom operate successfully, e.g., taking attendance, homework collection, paper
distribution and collection, student movement, and the like.

Classroom management - Classroom management involves all aspects of planning how to

organize and control the class, such as the arrangement of chairs and desks, teaching approach
and ways to motivate students, lesson plans, and ways to discipline students.

Diagnostic test - Diagnostic tests are used to assess or confirm students’ language proficiency,
and also to help teachers determine students’ strengths and and interests. Diagnostic tests can
help teachers plan future lessons.

Labeling - Labeling is classifying people (students) into categories, using incomplete

information. Labeling is often negative, such as calling someone “stupid” or “lazy.” It is harmful
because the bad behavior may be a result of emotional trauma or poor home conditions or
other factors that the student cannot control easily.

Lesson plan template - A lesson plan template is a form or outline that busy teachers can use
for planning all of their lessons. The form is general enough that it can be adapted to the
specific needs of each class.

Peer reinforcement - Peer reinforcement consists of feedback from friends or other students
in the class. It can be useful in correcting negative behavior and reinforcing positive behavior
both in and outside of the classroom.

Proactive - Being proactive means planning ahead, such as anticipating potential problems and
planning the class and lesson to avoid them.

Reactive teaching - Reactive teaching responds after the fact, such as after a student behavior
problem has occurred. It is better to be proactive and plan ahead.

Student identifier - A student identifier is a name tag, card, or other unique label that is used
to know who students are. It is especially useful in a large class.
