Autobiographical Statement

I am Garret Hartman, a native of the Central Indiana area since I grew up in Fairland, IN, 20
minutes southeast of downtown Indianapolis. There, I graduated in 2015 from Triton Central
High School, and I currently attend Indiana University as a pre-service teacher. History and the
various disciplines of social studies are my passions, so I intend to teach history at the middle
school level and history, psychology, and political science at the high school level.

In addition to obtaining licensure to teach social studies at the secondary level, I am also getting
an additional license in mild intervention special education. This is a growing field that is close
to my heart and will help me make an even bigger difference in the lives of students in Indiana
schools.

On top of that, I also spend a lot of time performing and teaching music. I became involved in
music in and out of the classroom as early as middle school, and continued my study and passion
for music through the wind family of instruments, mainly saxophone, trombone, and tuba. I also
have experience playing guitar and bass guitar, all of which are skills I can take to schools at an
extra-curricular level.

I have travelled the country touring in competitive music groups twice over the span of two
summers, and I began teaching marching band two years ago, which is something I hope to do at
my future school when I get a social studies class of my own.
