DAILY LESSON PLAN

Content: Universe and the Solar System

Content Standard: The learner demonstrates an understanding of the formation of the universe.
Performance Conduct a survey to assess the possible geologic hazards that your community may
Standard: experience. (Note: Select this performance standard if your school is in an area near fault
lines, volcanoes, and steep slopes.)
Learning The learners shall be able to:
Competencies:  describe the different hypotheses explaining the origin of the solar system
(S11/12ES-Ia-e-2)
 Explain the current advancements/information on the solar system
(S11/12ES-Ia-e-5)

Specific Objectives: The learner shall be able to

 identify the large scale and small scale properties of the Solar System;
 discuss the different hypotheses explaining the origin of the solar system; and
 become familiar with the most recent advancements/information on the solar system.
Resources: Teaching Guide
Materials: Projector or Print-out of figures
Introductory Activity: Prayer
Checking of Attendance
Lesson Proper: Activity:
Help learners recall what they have learned about the solar system by drawing a model on
the board. Ask the learners for the correct sequence (from the inner planets to the outer
planet).

Analysis:
1. What are the different planets in our solar system?
2. What are the characteristics of each planet that makes it distinguishable from the others?
3. Aside from the planet and the sun what other heavenly bodies are present?

Abstraction:
Give a lecture/demonstration of the following topics:

(Outline)
a) Solar System overview
b) Large Scale Features of the Solar System
c) Small scale features of the solar system
d) Elements that are abundant on Earth, the Meteorites and the Universe.

Application: (Optional)
Activity/game based on Active Accretion NASA's Discovery and New Frontiers Program:
http://dawn.jpl.nasa.gov/DawnClassrooms/pdfs/ActiveAccretion_Dawn.pdf

Evaluation: Explain the large scale features and the small scale features of the origin of the solar system.
Assignment: Students will answer this in their journal:
 Is the Solar System unique or rare? What is the possibility of finding a similar system
within the Milky Way Galaxy? What about an Earth like planet?
