Values Search – Year 8 RE – Term 3

Biblical texts focus on the development of values, attitudes, virtues and moral orientations that
necessarily underpin a moral life faithful to the covenant with God and lived in accordance with the
example of Jesus Christ and his Gospel. Some texts challenge us to justice, to consciousness of the
poor and needy, to advocacy and practical action on behalf of the oppressed. Other texts list attitudes
and dispositions that animate the moral life. Among such attitudes and dispositions are patience,
compassion, goodness, faithfulness, peacefulness, self-control and the like. Other texts counsel us
against negative attitudes, values and orientations that lead to sinful attitudes and actions. Among
such negatives are jealousy, pride, vanity, hardness of heart, hatred, indifference and so on.

Students read the following Scriptural passages: Isaiah 11:1-5, Galatians 5:22-23 and 1 Corinthians
12:8-11

Isaiah 11 Qualities of the Messiah

1
Like a branch that sprouts from a stump, someone from David's family will someday
be king. 2The Spirit of the LORD will be with him to give him understanding, wisdom,
and insight. He will be powerful, and he will know and honour the LORD. 3His
greatest joy will be to obey the LORD. This king won't judge by appearances or listen
to rumours. The poor and the needy will be treated with fairness and with justice. His
word will be law everywhere in the land, and criminals will be put to death. 5Honesty
and fairness will be his royal robes.

1 Corinthians 12 Gifts of the Holy Spirit
8
Some of us can speak with wisdom, while others can speak with knowledge, but
these gifts come from the same Spirit. 9To others the Spirit has given great faith or the
power to heal the sick 10or the power to work mighty miracles. Some of us are
prophets, and some of us recognise when God's Spirit is present. [1] Others can speak
different kinds of languages, and still others can tell what these languages mean. 11But
it is the Spirit who does all this and decides which gifts to give to each of us.
