FACULTY OF CIVIL AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

REINFORCED CONCRETE STRUCTURE DESIGN I

(BFC32102)
SEMESTER 1 2018/2019

PROJECT

This project must be carried out by group of maximum four (4) members only. This project contributes
20% to the coursework mark.

TOPIC: MODERN HOUSE DESIGN

A plot of land with size 30m x 25m is allocated to the construction of a new double-storey house. By using
Google SketchUp, develop the three-dimensional modern house and the architecture plan that consist of
four bedrooms, three bathrooms, one kitchen, one dining room, two lounges and one porch. After that,
proceed with the design stage of producing engineering layout, analysis of action, calculation of shear
forces and bending moments, design of structures and detailing. For the first stage of design, provide the
specifications and prepare the design of slabs and beams, as well as produce a complete report of the
following scopes:

a) Description of house
b) Analysis of architecture plan
c) Engineering layout of ground floor, first floor and roof beam
d) Analysis of action
e) Analysis of shear forces and bending moments
f) Specification and parameters
g) Beam analysis and design for simply supported and continuous beams.
h) Slab analysis and design for one-way and two-way slabs
i) Detailing of beams and slabs

1.0 Detail of Project:

a) The project must involve the design of double-storey house with modern outlook. Please refer to any
relevant sources regarding the design.
b) Architecture plan can be produced using Google SketchUp while engineering layout using AutoCAD.
c) Design consideration:

i. The analysis of architecture plan must be conducted to identify the dimension of building,
location of columns, position of beams and slabs as well as the type of slabs.
ii. All variables and permanent actions must follow the recommendation of Eurocode.

1/3
iii. Engineering layout must consist of key-plan of ground floor, first floor and roof beam.
iv. Specification of nominal cover must be calculated using the standard of practise. The use of
characteristic strength and size of reinforcement must follow the actual practise. The preliminary
beam dimension and slab thickness must follow the L/d and fire resistance requirement.

2.0 Report:

a) Report should include all information/parameters, analysis, design and drawing of structure and
structure plan arrangement.
b) Calculation and analysis of structural can be performed manually using the provided template.
c) The use of software such as Beamax and StaadPro to analyse shear forces and bending moments is
highly encouraged.
d) All engineering layouts and detailing must be produced using a CAD system. No manual drawing
shall be used.
e) A compile report must be submitted upon completing the course. Report must be submitted in MS
Word format, except the part of analysis and design.
f) Work processes and submission preliminary reports should be conducted as following schedule

01 October 2018 : House design and architecture plan

05 November 2018 : Engineering layout

26 November 2018 : Beam design

10 December 2018 : Slab design

2.0 Submission:

a) Submission of complete report and design is before or at 19 December 2018 (Wednesday) before
3.00PM. Please use the provided front page and attach the code of ethic and evaluation rubric.
b) If the project is submitted late without sufficient cause, a penalty shall be applied. A deduction of 15%
of the maximum mark available from the actual mark achieved by the group shall be imposed upon
expiry of the deadline. A further deduction of 5% of the maximum mark available from the actual
achieved by the group shall then be imposed of the next subsequence days.
c) Plagiarism and academic dishonesty can have some severe penalties and repercussions.

4.0 Assessment:

The assessment of this project will be based on three concepts, cognitive, psychomotor and affective.
Brief criteria of the assessment are:

- Structural system and idealization, concepts and assumptions

- Plan and layout
- Analysis, design and detailing
- Report and organization of report
- Professionalism, ethics and creativity

Please refer the evaluation rubric for details of assessment.
