Before working on this equipment personne! should be made aware of, and ensure compliance with, the Health and Safety Regulations appropriate to this class of work Work must only be carried out by suitably qualified and competent persons. Before lifting, installing and operating the unit, the instructions detailed below, and also the accompanying manual must be read. Ensure that all equipment used for lifting the unit is adequate for the weight. The weight is normally stencilled on the unit and/or stamped on the machine nameplate. The handling points are indicated on the unit and these must be used. The hooks of slings must not be fitted directly to lifting eyebolts or lugs, shackles must be used. Before running the unit for the first time, the installation must be thoroughly checked and the procedure detailed in Section 4 of this manual under the heading “Preparation for Initial Operation" referred to. The unit must not be run unless all protective guards supplied with the equipment are in position, Before proceeding with maintenance on the unit, or making adjustments to its connections and fittings, it must be stopped and isolated electrically and mechanically and visible warning notices displayed. Ensure safety procedures for hazardous gases or oxygen depletion are carried out before opening the tanks. Before commencing repair or overhaul a preliminary check of available spares must be made, e.g. replacement set of joints or jointing material Pumps handle various liquids, sometimes not those for which the pump was initially supplied. Know the properties of the liquids that have been pumped, and the actions necessary to make handling safe and in the event of an emergency. Before handling sodium hypochlorite refer to instructions in Section 4. ‘The equipment should not be installed in an explosive atmosphere.
