Introduction
Developed by Battelle for Kids in collaboration with Gallup, The Student Experience SurveyΠ is
designed to provide educators with a more comprehensive picture of what matters most to
student success, now and in the future. The survey captures student feedback at the classroom-
level around four key themes:
‡ Classroom Hope: The ideas and energy students have for the future.
‡ Classroom Engagement: Students' involvement in and enthusiasm for learning.
‡ Classroom Belonging: Students feel cared for and respected.
‡ Classroom Management: A classroom that is conducive to learning.

Survey items are based on years of Gallup research around hope and engagement. The items
also measure select educator standards from across the country for creating a classroom
environment that fosters learning and student well-being. Teachers and students have provided
input to enhance the development of the survey.

Overview of the Survey Results

Your survey results are grouped around the four key themes: Hope, Engagement, Belonging,
and Classroom Management. Student responses range from 1 (Strongly Disagree) through 5
(Strongly Agree).

The first page of the report features a Measures Summary with a snapshot of student responses
around each survey theme. The report also provides more detailed information for each theme,
including a list of all corresponding survey items with the percentage of positive responses and an
item mean. The final section of the report includes a list of the five survey items with the highest and
lowest percentages of positive responses to help you further explore strengths and opportunities for
growth.

Respond to Survey Results

No single measure can capture the complexity of teaching and learning, but there is evidence
that student feedback, when combined with other measures, can be a powerful tool to inform
teacher practice and improve outcomes for students. As you review your survey results, use
the following questions to examine and reflect on your summary data, particularly strengths and
opportunities for growth.
‡ How do the survey responses match your thoughts about the student experience in this
class/school/district?
ƕ Based on these areas of agreement, what are your strengths and areas for growth?
‡ In which areas do the survey responses differ from your thoughts about the student experience
in this class/school/district?
ƕ Based on these differences, what may be better than you thought?
ƕ Based on these differences, what are some areas for reflection and growth?
