Tutorial 4 Problems
1. Find a particular solution to

x2 y 00 − 3xy 0 + 4y = x2 .

2. Solve the system

x0 = 3x + 5y

y 0 = −x − 3y
(Note: this system will have two distinct real eigenvalues).

3. Solve the initial value problem

 0
x = −2x + 2y
, x(0) = 10, y(0) = 10.
y 0 = −13x

(Note: this system will have complex eigenvalues).

4. Find a fundamental matrix for the system

x0 = x + 2y

y 0 = −2x + 5y

(Note: this system will have a repeated eigenvalue with only one independent
corresponding eigenvector).

Additional example if there is extra time:

5. Solve the system

x0 = 2x

y 0 = 2y
(Note: this system will have a repeated eigenvalue with two independent corre-
sponding eigenvectors).
