What We Did, What’s Coming Up:
Language Arts:
Our shared reading this week was the song The More We Get Together. We learned two new sight words
and added them to our word wall: we, are. This week we talked about return sweep. When we are
pointing to the words as we read and get to the end of a line, we move down to the start of the next line.

Our focus read aloud this week was Flower Garden by Eve Bunting.

Our writer’s workshop mentor text this week was Titch by Pat Hutchins. Our topic we are focusing on is
things we like to do with our family and friends like our main character Titch.

At the beginning of our week, we practiced splitting into three groups and practicing one center a day in
an independent work area: reading, writing, and word work. On Thursday, we worked on rotating to all
three.

Math:
This week in math, we sorted ourselves by our own attributes: hair color, type of shoes, color of article of clothing, etc. We continued our
exploration of attributes with our manipulatives. Our challenge was to use as many items as the days we have been in school. We worked
together to create a huge attribute train and were able to link over 25 blocks! Next week we will start a new unit about counting
quantities and comparing lengths. Our focus will be on counting and comparing different amounts of objects (using key vocabulary of
more than, less than, equal to) and beginning to explore measurement by directly comparing objects to see which is longer. We will be
counting out sets up to 10 objects, deciding which object of two objects is longer, and comparing two quantities of objects up to 10 to
determine which is greater/bigger.

Content:
This week, we wrapped up our communities unit by learning about that we are a part of many communities including Broadus Wood ES,
Albemarle County, Virginia, and the United States. We looked closely at the American flag and its different parts and their meaning. We
recreated our own version of the American flag and created our class flag together with puzzle pieces. Each one of us is a special piece
that helps complete our class puzzle flag! On Thursday, we switched content to science with talking about what a science is and what
scientists do. Our first task as scientists was to observe different collections from nature with a new tool we will use a lot this year: magnifying
glasses. We got to observe a cactus rib, various tree trunk chunks, sea shells of all sorts, and fossils in rocks. Next week, we will introduce one
of the five senses each day.
