Grade Level/Subject: 3rd Reading Central Focus: Summarize an informational text and share with the class.
Daily Lesson Objective: As a group, students will be able to discuss and summarize a chapter in a book. Students graded
based on their individual roles in the group as well as how they worked together.
21st Century Skills: Academic Language Demand (Language Function and Vocabulary):
Prior Knowledge: Students should have basic knowledge of jobs which require elections to fill as well as the voting
process. Students will have also practiced literature circles and should be familiar with the practice.
“So now we are going to summarize what this book is trying to tell us. Who
knows what summarize means?” Wait for answer. “To summarize, we find
the main idea of the story and support it with details. I am going to summarize
this story. It is important to do our part and vote so that we elect the people
who will represent our opinions and values. We can vote for people like the

president, senator, and mayor.”
“Turn to your neighbor and say 1 more fact you learned from this book.”
Wait for students to settle.
“Who can tell me what their neighbor said?”
“Now we are going to split up into groups and you will read a chapter from a
book together. Once you finish reading that chapter, you will discuss what you

read and fill out your worksheet based on that discussion. The jobs you will
have are: Discussion Director, Summarizer, Word Wizard, Fact Finder. First

thing you do when you get back to your seat is to choose your job. Then one
person will read it out loud. As a group you help each other complete the
discussion questions, summarize the chapter, and draw the picture. Once all
groups are done, you will read your summery of the chapter to the rest of the
class.”
Teacher circulates the room, observing groups working, answering questions,
and making sure students stay on task.
Once students are finished, we will come back as a class.
“Ok beginning with chapter one, please summarize your chapter for the rest of
the class.”
Continue until all groups have gone.
