COURSE OVERVIEW ME890
Stress Analysis of Piping Systems and Pipelines
Course Title
Stress Analysis of Piping Systems and Pipelines
Course Reference
ME890
Course Duration
Five days
Course Objectives
The course provides a comprehensive and practical understanding of the ASME
B31.3 code (refining and petrochemical process and utilities), the B31.4 code (crude
and refined liquid products), the B31.8 code (gas) and the B31G code (corroded
pipelines) codes; to help the participant make the right design and inspection
decisions for new systems and construction, make cost-effective run-or-repair
decisions for existing systems, and select and design repair alternatives for
degraded and aged systems.
Each section is followed by practical class exercises to apply the concepts learned to
actual field case histories in plant process piping and oil and gas pipelines.
The experienced engineer or inspector will find an in-depth exploration of the code
rules, their origin, their application to existing (corroded) systems, their role in the
evaluation of inspection results and failure analysis, and future trends and
developments. The new engineer or inspector will find an excellent opportunity to
learn – in a structured and logical sequence – how to apply the fundamental
concepts of the ASME B31 codes for piping systems (B31.3) and pipelines (B31.4,
B31.8 and B31G).
The course builds on the fundamentals of ASME B31 to also provide the tools for the
analysis of corrosion and cracking mechanisms, the structured approach to failure
analysis (failure cause and effects), remaining life and repair strategies.
The course includes calculation techniques for making quantitative decisions in
design, integrity, evaluation of inspection results, and determination of remaining life.
Please bring a calculator.
Course Certificate
Harvard Technology certificate will be issued to all attendees completing the course.

Who Should Attend
This course is intended for the engineer and the inspector responsible for the cost-
effective and reliable design and construction of new systems as well as the
inspection and continued integrity of operating piping systems and pipelines. Further,
Design Draftsmen will benefit from this course.
Course Fee
US $ 2,750 per Delegate. This rate includes Participant’s Pack (Folder, Manual,
Hand-outs, etc.), buffet lunch, coffee/tea on arrival, morning & afternoon of each day.
This fee also includes Mr. George Antaki’s book “Piping and Pipeline
Engineering”, a 540 pages hard cover book published by M. Dekker, New York
in 2003.
Accommodation
Accommodation is not included in course fees. However, any accommodation
required can be arranged by Harvard Technology at the time of booking.
Course Instructor
Mr. George Antaki, P.E. (USA), is a registered professional engineer in the United
States and a Fellow of ASME (the American Society of Mechanical Engineers). He
is a practicing engineer in the field of piping, pipelines and mechanical equipment.
He is a member of several ASME code committees, including the Executive
Committee on Post-Construction, Vice-Chairman of the joint ASME-API
committee on Fitness-for-Service (API 579), and the ASME B31 Mechanical
Design Technical Committee. Mr. Antaki is an ASME instructor in piping, pipelines
and integrity, and the author of “Piping and Pipeline Engineering” book, published
by M. Dekker.
