Chapter 1

The problem and its background

Introduction:

These days discipline is one of the most important and useful skills

everyone should posses. Discipline is essential in every area of life, and though

most people acknowledge its importance, very few do something to strengthen it.

Those are advantages of using discipline such as self-discipline, Task-discipline,

Group-discipline and Imposed-discipline. This will be explaining the main benefits

of discipline to BS Criminology Students.

Discipline brings stability and structure into a person’s life. It teaches a

person to be responsible and respectful. The observance of well-defined rules is

the basis of society. If there were no discipline, people would do whatever they

wanted and make mistakes without putting the consideration of others first and

foremost. It promotes good human behavior to better society and makes it a

more enjoyable place for everyone to lives. Discipline is a concept everyone is

aware of, but few truly understand. The most successful people in life exert

discipline on a daily basis. It is vital to every living being and without it; the world

around us would be chaos.

Behavior to better society and make it a more enjoyable place for

everyone to live. Discipline is an essential part of our life. In fact without discipline

life we cannot work smoothly. Parents, elders of the family and the teachers are
the first persons to introduce the sense of discipline to the children. Discipline

must be learn t from the early stages of life. Discipline ensures the smooth flow

of life without putting hindrance to the individual's liberty. Discipline teaches us to

be systematic towards achieving our goal of life. It helps us to archive our

ambitions. Self-discipline is to motivate self in spite of a negative emotional state

of mind. For self-discipline individual should have strong will power to control the

mind. Self-discipline works automatically and leads to the success. Group-

Discipline It involves placing group goals above your own, being willing to

accept orders from higher authority, and carrying out those orders effectively.

Task-Discipline Task discipline is a requires that you have a strong sense of

responsibility to do your job to the best of your ability. Imposed Discipline This

type of discipline provides the structure and good order necessary throughout

your unit to accomplish a task no matter the situation.

This Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) is advantage to the students

who wants to take Criminology and Army. They can get more advance

knowledge about this kind of training. In contrary, this would be disadvantage to

the other students who would like to take education and some other courses.

Doing this kind of training you need to exert efforts to do your task that your head

officer commanded.

During this training you need to be physically fit cause you will be easily

get tired. Programs are not for everyone, but those who have the dedication,

drive, and discipline to make it to graduation will benefit from a stable route
through college, diverse career opportunities, and a service experience certain to

impact them for the rest of their lives. A second benefit to joining an ROTC

program is the opportunity to cultivate discipline skills. Many former cadets hail

the program for helping them to develop confidence in themselves.

As well as their parents only need to understand and be assured that the

discipline being instilled through ROTC project beyond their lives as college

students and are building blocks upon which the new breed of Filipino leaders

are molded and honed. Malacañang’s recent approval of the plan to make the

Reserved Officers Training Corps (ROTC) program mandatory students certainly

comes as good news to those yearning for a more disciplined.

All the marching and the various formations that ROTC cadets execute

under the hot sun indeed have their purpose. and unity are developed and the

grueling exercises instill the value of discipline and sacrifice to achieve common

objectives. Discipline and obedience to authority developed through the ROTC

program can go a long way in addressing the problems our country is faced with

from the hellish traffic jams worsened by undisciplined motorists and pedestrians,

to the nightmarish drug menace.

ROTC cannot be blamed if abuses and violence in the past have created

the impression that the program is no good and students are not learning

anything other than marching on the field under the sweltering heat of the sun. A

militant youth group even claimed ROTC promotes Self- Discipline and that it is

nothing more than a fascist tool of repression used by the state to instill a

militaristic mindset among students.

Background of the study

Discipline in ROTC is one of the important aspects in teaching discipline to

the students. Discipline that used by the students can influence and change the

Individual Behavior. So, the discipline are challenged should be able to manage

by the students, including Self-discipline, Task discipline, Group discipline and

Imposed discipline. And maintaining the discipline to the students discipline is

the system of rules, punishments and behavior strategies appropriate to the

regulation of children or adolescents and the maintenance of order in schools. Its

aim is to control the student’s action and behavior. An obedient student is in

compliance with the discipline rules and code of conducts.

ROTC is one of several pathways to becoming an officer into today’s

military, and a college degree is a prerequisite for all of them. The military

academies , like military discipline into nearly all areas of a cadet’s life. For those

who want to pursue an alternative route that both ends in a commission and

permits the retention of a “normal” college experience, ROTC is a rewarding

choice. Cadets go to classes in civilian clothes, but participate in 6:00 am

physical training sessions three times per week at the ROTC. So it’s no wonder

that psychological scientists have been studying willpower for decades, trying to

figure out who is disciplined under what circumstances. One of the reigning

theories of willpower is what’s called energy model of self-control. According to

this energy model, the brain like a muscle, with limited study of strength, this can

be depleted through exertion. Nobody is disciplined at all time; we all have

lapses. And according to the energy model, these lapses occur when one act of
self-control weakens our resolve, leaving us fatigued as we face another

challenged.

Theoretical Framework

This study based on the discipline among the students individuals are

classified into self-discipline, task discipline, group discipline and imposed

discipline. Their decisions and actions are determined primarily by objective

relationship and their attention and interest are centered on the immediate

environment rather than good discipline. The National Association of School

Psychologists also advocates for making "teachable moments" out of

disciplinary issues, but with a focus on instilling the values of self-discipline in

students rather than merely replacing punishments for bad behavior with

rewards for good behavior. Instead of attempting to control students, school

officers guide students' behavior by helping them understand the impacts of

their actions and collaborating with peers to develop ways to change their

behavior.
Conceptual Framework

The conceptual frame work of this study follows (3) three aspects of

system consisting Input, Output, and Process. The concept includes the ROTC

discipline to criminology students at Laguna State Polytechnic University. Self-

Discipline the act of disciplining or power to one’s own feelings, desires with the

intention of improving oneself. At the fundamental of discipline the discipline is

the practice of training people to obey rules or a code of behavior, using

punishment to correct disobedience. The input define the personal profile of the

BS criminology students as their: (a). age, (b). sex (c). civil status

(d) educational attainment . The Output solely define the implication of findings of

the study to the ROTC programs of LSPU-LB Campus

This study considers the Reserved Officer Training Course As fundamental

Mechanism Discipline to BS Criminology Students.

Significance of the study

The finding of the study will be great monstrosity of significant and help to

the following:

STUDENTS. The result will provide the students with some knowledge on

discipline on how they make the right decisions. It will give the student’s a

realization that discipline is the key to achieve goals in life. At the end of this

study student’s finally know why discipline brings stability and structure into a

person’s life.

TEACHERS. The given data would guide the teachers on what to do with the

students who have no discipline. The teachers would able to understand on why

some students life is ruined and later on, help them.

Discipline is strongly affected by the stability and values system of society at

large. The current generation of students is under the guidance of parents and

teachers whose values and techniques of discipline control we often confused,

idealistic and over-indulged, matter of fact, today’s student have poor work

habits, are left too much to themselves and behave like adults of a lost and

barren generation. The means of overcoming discipline problems cannot be

repaired by in- serving but by affecting society as whole. The similarities and

differences among disciplines with respect to how the knowledge is constructed

represented and communicated. Thus, Criminology students are left to figure out

on their own that the same rules. Discipline to students using the four stage

model of discipline, article develops a set of proportions regarding differences

between discipline among the students. Stage one involves the self-discipline the

ideal situation is to motivate cadets to willingly discipline themselves, and

exercise self control and direction to accomplish the task best of your ability.

Stage two is Imposed discipline is the enforced obedience to legal orders and

regulations. Stage three is the group discipline group discipline means teamwork
and stage four Task discipline is a measure of how well you meet the challenges

of your job.
