So after reading everything I could find and trying everything I could find, I still failed to access the BIOS of my X875-Q7380. Is there
Posts: 12 anyone out there that could help me with this simple task?

I just got the laptop this Wed (10/31) so it is running Windows 8 as well as the BIOS is ver 6.1 My issue seems to be that is does not show a
Toshiba splash screen when booting. It shows a Qosmio splash with a little circle load indicator for about 3 sec then it proceeds to boot
from there.

I have tried the following key combo's.

Pressing F1 - F12 (Tried each)

Pressing and holding F1-F12
Pressing ESC and DEL
Holding Fn key and all the above

General pressing of all the keys on the keyboard

Is there something I am missing from this whole thing? I should be able to figure this **bleep** thing out with 12 years of PC exp but I fail
hard on this one. Does anyone know if it might have to do with how the Function keys and F keys are combined?

I am going to try one last thing before I go talk to tech support. I am going to reboot and use a USB keyboard to see if I can get it done
that way now.

But any info on accessing the bios would be GREAT!

On some models, when the boot speed is set to Fast you need to hold down the F2 key prior to turning the power on. Try that.

Snipe, take a look at your User's Guide on page 119. In Windows 8, you no longer have to access the BIOS in the way we are all used to
apparently. The reference I gave is called "System Settings" and appears to have all the setting possibilities that the BIOS does. I'm

Posts: 2,328 guessing because of that, the "Press F2 to go to Setup" message no longer appears on the startup Toshiba screen. I do not have Windows 8
myself so some of this is conjecture. Peter, when you read this, please comment.

Please note, BTW, that your Model number is X875-Q7380. There are no Q875 models.

You may be right, CB. Toshiba made some machines in the past where Windows needed to run in order to access the BIOS (now probably
the UEFI). Sometimes leaves the user in a bad situation though.

You were right, Jerry. On Win 8 machines, the BIOS has been replaced by the UEFI (Unified Extensible Firmware Interface). Holy cow!

System recoveries (or "system reset" as Microsoft is calling it) seem to need Windows as well as far as I can tell. The '0'-key method loads
the Windows 8 Advanced Startup options, which is where you access system restore, refresh, reset, UEFI settings, etc.

That would enable us to reach the UEFI without Windows. Or maybe I don't understand the 0-key method.

I don't see anything about it here.

Windows 8 features "fast startup" which hibernates the kernel and closes everything else upon shutdown. For this reason, I could not get
to the BIOS setup on my S855-S5268 that came with Windows 7 (and I upgraded to Windows 8) because my BIOS was technically resuming

from hibernation, during which process it does not show the option to enter the BIOS.

If you disable "fast startup" in Windows 8 power options, you should be able to get to the UEFI setup upon booting.

If Windows is corrupted, then shutting down the machine manually and then powering it on again should allow you to get to the UEFI/BIOS
because the machine will not have been placed into hibernation on the last shutdown.

Now, I really REALLY need to know if Toshiba offers a way to disable "Secure Boot" in the UEFI setup because I really don't want to need to
return a laptop because it couldn't boot Linux.

Edited to add: If Windows 8 "fast startup" is enabled, you can shutdown the system completely (meaning, without hibernating the kernel)
by holding the shift key while shutting down. This will enable you to access the UEFI on the next boot.

ALSO: I answered my own question about Secure Boot, and I am thoroughly delighted with Toshiba, yet again. There IS a way to disable
secure boot, in fact you MUST DO SO to update the UEFI/BIOS! I learned this on the "downloads" page of the Satellite S855-S5380, a
machine that ships with Windows 8. If you select the most recent BIOS update for that model, it gives instructions on disabling Secure
Boot. This is also how I learned the trick with shutting down while holding Shift.

Jerry, I'll have to check with the person who wrote that article. It may not be consistent across all types of machines, which could be why
it was left off. I don't know for sure.

0 Please help us with this item also, Peter. How can we tell whether a model comes with a BIOS or with UEFI?

In particular, do all the models with preinstalled Windows 8 have UEFI? And do all the models without preinstalled Windows 8 have a BIOS?

Ok I got time this morning to read over what was posted up here and am happy to say I have access to a BIOS/UEFI pre windows 8 boot.

0 I followed the article CB had posted on how to access the UEFI. From there I switched off fast boot and secure boot. I then rebooted hit
F2 and WIN!

I am going to do the following to see if I can get some useful info for future users on this new setup

- Replace HDD with fresh HDD and see how recovery goes from the following a Toshiba created thumb drive, Win 7/8 OEM DVD, Linux
DVD/CD, Clone image of drive.
- Installing a linux OS for a dual boot situation Windows 8/Ubuntu most likely

If there are more combo's you wish for me to try let me know and I will do my best to break everything!

Oh and I like how it was mainly mods that responded to the question

While you're playing around, you might verify that the 0 (zero) key gets you to the Boot Options menu.

Microsoft tells us that a failure to boot will result in this menu instead of a BSOD screen.

I am not sure if you would consider this a UEFI or a BIOS but this is it. It has your standard options for boot order, basic hardware
treatment ect. It is lacking in advanced config for the power user but for everyday use its ok.
