About the Program

While carrying out NSS activities it is observed that some volunteers are
unable to make it to participate on a particular day as they have to participate in
sports competition. Around 25 in each unit are involved in sports. This spirit,
generated an idea for observing NATIONAL YOUTH DAY.

VANAM MANAM
LABELING PROGRAM

The better way to honour someone or celebrate an occasion is

by gifting a tree. A living and breathing gift that lives for

Uses of forests
People began life on this planet as forest dwellers. They were food gatherers
and depended on the forest for all their needs: food, clothing, and shelter. They
gradually became food growers, clearing a small patch in the forest to grow
food. But they continued to depend on forests to meet a lot of their needs. Even
today people depend on the forest for paper, timber, fuel wood, medicine, and
fodder.

 Fuel wood:wood is an important source of energy for cooking and

heating. Some of the wood is converted to charcoal and used for cooking.
 Fodder: Fodder from the forest forms an important source for cattle and
other grazing animals in the hilly and the arid regions and during a
drought.
 Soil erosion Check: Tree roots bind the soil and prevent erosion
caused by wind or water. Leaf fall also provides a soil cover that further
protects the soil.
 Medicinal use:Even today man is dependent on the forest for herbs and
plants to fight against disease Leaves, bark, and other parts of many other
trees also have medicinal value and are used to make various ayurvedic
medicines.
 Fibre:Plant fibre has many different uses. Soft fibres such as jute are
derived from the stems of the plant. Hard fibre from the leaves of hemp
and sisal are used to make fabrics for various applications. Coir, another
form of fibre from the fruit of the coconut, is used to make ropes.
 Floss:The fruits of many species of Indian trees produce silky floss. The
most common of these is simal. It is used to made cotton wool,
mattresses, and pillows.
 Essential oils:Tropical grasses such as lemon grass, citronella, and
khus are the source of essential oils. Oil is distilled from the wood of
various species such as sandalwood, agar, and pine. Oil is also derived
from the leaves of certain plants and trees such as eucalyptus, camphor,
wintergreen, and pine. These oils are used for making soaps, cosmetics,
incense, pharmaceuticals, and confectionery.

ABSTRACT:-
On the observance of National Science Day and Water Conservation
Day, The NSS unit-1 volunteers of Gayatri Vidya Parishad college of
engineering(A) has taken a step forward to create awareness among
the people about how water plays a vital role in humans survival. An
awareness week is conducted between 26th of February 2018 to 2nd
of march 2018.

Everybody wants happiness

But nobody wants pain

But you cant have a rainbow

Without a little rain

So for that little rain to happen, we have taken the initiative to

grab the trespassers attention through some attractive water tricks
and conveyed the message of conserving water. The volunteers have
also explained about the possible ways on which one can give their
contributions towards conserving water.

AWARENESS THROUGH MAGIC TAP :

INTRODUCTION
Phillip bloom is an inventor who saw the idea of a ‘frozen moment’ tap while holidaying in
the United States. In a shop window he saw taps gushing with water while apparently
suspended in mid-air and not attached to any source of water.

The taps intrigued him but, as they were selling for more than $100 each, he decided to put
his inventive skills to the test to make his won.

The magic tap is a clever illusion. It consists of a faucet mysteriously hovering above a pool
or basin with an endless supply of water gushing out of it from seemingly nowhere. The
faucet remains surprising steady despite having no visible support and where is all this water
coming from? This spectacular effect is achieved by a transparent tube in middle of water
column that holds the tap in place and, at the same time keeps feeding it with water pumped
from below. The water goes up through the tube and exits at the top. The water goes up
through the tube and exists at the top. The water column, which is usually turbulent,
effectively hides the tube from view.

Several giant floating tap fountains can be found around Spain, Belgium, US, Canada and
other parts of the world.

WATER TECH INDIA introduced the product of worth Rs1, 50,000/- is placed in Gujarat
which is not unique but expensive and became as a commercialproduct in society.

On behalf of water day celebrations we displayed it.

DESCRIPTION
As it is miniature version of magic tap we used a bucket with a hole at the
centre and 50ml burette with four holes is attached to tap and pipe is taken
through the bucket and is attached to another end of burette .The water travels
upwards through pipe due to high pressure at the bottom. As water reaches to
the top of burette it falls down from the holes made at the end of burette due to
gravity. This happens continuously, which appears that the water is coming
through pipe without any sources.

WATER SURVEY
In the present day society creating awareness about conservation of water is
very essential. There are already many places which are suffering a severe water
shortage .If we don’t take this issue seriously then we need to face severe
consequences.

From the moment we wake up we need .Improper water supply causes a lot of
inconvenience to all of us. But still we waste a lot of water. If we ignore this
situation then there will be a day when water will cost more than gold!

Well our college NSS (NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME) unit took the
initiative to create awareness among the pupil of our college. As a part of
WORLD WATER DAY which is observed on 22nd march every year, we
conducted a survey among the students of our college .

As a part of survey we created a google form and around 200 students gave
their responses. The main motto of theis survey was to identify the water usage
and wastage and to motivate them to use water wisely. The questions like How
much water they drink? How many buckets of water they use to bath? How
much amount of water you utilise for cooking purpose? And so on.

This survey was conducted in the 1st week of march. All their resposes were
recorded andat the end we also mentioned some motivating and inspiring words

In this process all the department students actively participated and gave their
opinions and responses.

WATER TRICKS TO CREATE AWARENESS

ON CONSERVATION OF WATER

GVP COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING (A) Page 104

NSS UNIT AP11-007 REGULAR ACTIVITIES REPORT 2017-18

TRICK:- SEPARATION OF OIL AND WATER

The procedure of the trick goes as follows:-

Take a glass of water (transparent glass), in an another container take
some oil with added colors. Pour the oil slowly into the glass of water from one
edge of the glass. Now, you will be able to see a layer of oil floating on top of
the water and the colors get dispersed into the water

THEOREY:- Since, oil is less denser than water it tends to float on

water without dissolving in it.

GVP COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING (A) Page 105

NSS UNIT AP11-007 REGULAR ACTIVITIES REPORT 2017-18

TRICK :- HOT WATER AND COLD WATER

ABOUT TRICK:-

Different temperature water has different density. Warmer water is

less dense and will have a lower weight when compared to cold
water. First take one glass of cold water and add few drops of yellow
food colour and now take another glass of hot water and add few
drops of red food colour to it. Carefully hold the index card on top of
the hot (red) water and flip it upside down, resting the cup on top of
the cold (yellow) water cup. Quickly remove the index card allowing
the cold water and hot water to mix. Now you can observe that
these two do not mix because Whenever you put together two
liquids the liquid that is less dense will float on top of the denser
liquid. Since hot water is less dense than cold water. When you put
the two together with the hot water on top these two do not mix.
This is the principle of our experiment. We have explained this trick
to our students and to some our faculty members. All of our team
mates have performed our level best and tried to bring awareness
among them. And here we are attaching some of our pictures taken
during our event.....

TRICK:- SODA WATER WITH GRAPES

ABOUT TRICK:-
THINGS WHICH WE NEED:
2. Soda water
3. Grapes
PROCEDURE:
1. Fill the glass bowl with soda water about 3/4th of its depth.
2. Drop some grapes with peel into the glass bowl.
3. Now, peel of some grapes and place it in the glass bowl
4. Wait for a period of 15-20 minutes.
5. You can observe that the grapes which have peel remain constant
on the top of the soda water and the grapes that don't have peel
fluctuate up and down.
The grapes with no peel fluctuate up and down which is just
because due to gravity, mass and density!

TRICK:- Non leakage water bag

ABOUT THE TRICK:-
We consider a bag or packet with water and we pass a large Length of nail or a
pen through it horizontally…Water in it doesn’t leaks…..

TRICK:- PEPPER IN WATER

GVP COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING (A) Page 108
NSS UNIT AP11-007 REGULAR ACTIVITIES REPORT 2017-18

ABOUT THE TRICK:-

In bowl of water, we add a pepper powder and when you
touch it pepper attaches to finger if you apply soap to finger and now
if you keep it in bowl with pepper it doesn’t adhere to our finger …

TRICK:- PASSING WATER BETWEEN PAPERS TRICK

ABOUT THE TRICK:-
We arranged five transparent disposable glasses one after
the other, as shown in the picture, and then filled the first, middle
and last glass fully with water. The water in the three filled glasses
was colored with three different food colors (here, red, green and
yellow). Then, the glasses were connected to each other using
blotting/tissue paper, and left to rest for about 40 minutes. It was
observed that water transported through the paper from the three
filed glasses into the two empty glasses between them. The water
level in all the five glasses becomes equal.

TRICK:- LAVA LAMP

ABOUT THE TRICK:-
A glass is filled one fourth with water and three fourth with cooking
oil. Food colour is added to the water to make it too the thick look
more promising. When a tablet that prodices effervescences is added
to it. It produces bubbles escaping through the liquid. It is a feast to
eyes and the trick was able to gather a big crowd

After performing the trick we spoke about World Water Day. We also
educated them on simple hack to save water. We advised that, we
need to do our bit to conserve water as it is one of the essential
components of life.

TRICK:- BALLOON CANDLE TRICK

GVP COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING (A) Page 110

NSS UNIT AP11-007 REGULAR ACTIVITIES REPORT 2017-18

ABOUT THE TRICK:-

This trick just based on simple physics law called as "ABSORPTION OF
HEAT". When you put an object over a flame, it starts getting hot--
gaining heat that is released from the flame. In a normal balloon
filled with air, the rubber of the balloon quickly heats, fraying and
coming apart—

so the balloon gets a hole and pops. But if the balloon is filled with
water, the heat that the balloon rubber is gaining can dissipate into
the water inside, raising the temperature of the water and leaving
the rubber surface cool and undamaged. This is because water
transfers heat much more efficiently than air, and has a higher heat
capacity (how much heat is needed to raise its temperature).

Due to this phenomenon, the balloon won’t pop.

TRICK:- CHANGING DIRECTION TRICK

ABOUT THE TRICK:-
This trick just based on simple physics law called as "REFRACTION".
When light ray passes through the air and reaches the glass surface
and then passes into water where it changes its refractive index. And
this ray passes through the back surface of glass and then refracted.
Thus at a certain focal length between image and glass. The focal
point is formed in between them making the image reversed. Due to
this phenomenon, at a certain focal length when we peep the image
through the glass of water we can observe the reversed image.

And all this will happen only due to refraction of light...

NSS UNIT AP11-007 REGULAR ACTIVITIES REPORT 2017-18

TRICK:- FIRE AND WATER MAGIC TRICK

ABOUT THE TRICK:-
The phenomenon of water rising after covering a burning candle
mainly involves the combustion of candle and the contraction of
trapped heat air.

EQUIPMENT:
o Beaker or a household glass
o Candles with a floatable base
o Lighter or matches
o Pie pan or a plate(s) approximately 12” in diameter and ½”
deep
o Water

EXPLANATION:
Fill a plate with water about a ¼” deep. Light the candle and set it in
the middle of the plate
When the burning candle is covered with the beaker, the flame
eventually goes out because it uses up all the oxygen. Fire needs
oxygen to burn. The other gas left behind has less pressure
compared to air. Remember that when the candle burns the oxygen
GVP COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING (A) Page 114
NSS UNIT AP11-007 REGULAR ACTIVITIES REPORT 2017-18

turns to carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide has less pressure than

Oxygen. As a result of the different pressure inside the beaker, the
air pressure outside the beaker tries to equalize the lower pressure
difference inside the beaker but does so by pushing the water into
the beaker. This is why the water rises. It is sitting between the air
outside of the beaker and the left over gases inside the beaker
