3. Beneficence: to do good
Theories: 4 theories
Utility: do what’s best for the greatest number of people. It’s the outcome that matters not the
action
Also called communitarianism: do what is best for the community
Liberal individualism: one person stands out among the group, the one person has the freedom
of choice. Human rights, individual’s vs large groups
It is ethically right because it is a women’s choice in liberal individualism to choose what is best
for herself and not the community, it is also support by Kantian thought we do not know the
actions that lead to the abortion, due to these unknowns it is ethically correct for a woman to
have an abortion

PATERNALISM 2.Utility- Mill’s theory (focuses on outcome). It Is a Paternalism type of theory. This
theory is based on what is good for the greatest number of people. The outcome is
more important than the result.
EG. The outcome is that the fetus is killed which makes abortion wrong. Pro-life side.
This theory would ignore the actions but focus on the outcome which in this case would
result in a fetus.
EG. Neda is reporting that someone has HIV because she does not want the community
to be affected. Neda is demonstrating that she is utility based because she is focusing
on the outcome/result of the person having HIV and how it could affect others.
3. Liberal Individualism- autonomy concept. --- Justice
--- Safe
AUTONOMY
4. Deentology: Kant’s Theory- also refers to the concept of autonomy. The theory is that
the action is more important the the result or outcome.
EG. The actions that were taken for the woman to become pregnant and choose
abortion. They would look at actions resulting in pregnancy such as rape, incest, etc.
Pro-Choice side.
EG. Amrita would not report that someone has HIV because she does not know the
action that lead to the person getting HIV. Amrita is action based as opposed to
outcome/result based.
