Millicent Atkins School of Education: Common Lesson Plan
Template

PLANNING
List the Common Core/State Standard(s) to be addressed in this lesson:

RI. 4.5: Describe the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect.
Problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in a text or part of a text.
List the Learning Objective(s) to be addressed in this lesson. Use the following format:
“Students will be able to…”

Students will be able to identify what is a cause and what is an effect in sentence.
Describe how the objective is relevant to students’ lives.

The objective is relevant to students’ lives because for every action that they do, something
happens because of that action. This lesson will teach them that a cause always has an effect,
whether it is in a story or in their life.
List the words relevant to the content area that you will either introduce and/or review during
your lesson.

Cause
Effect

List the materials you will need to teach the lesson.

Cause and Effect Matching Materials

ASSESSMENT
Pre-Assessment: Describe the instrument or process you will use to measure students’ level
of understanding toward the learning objective(s) prior to teaching the lesson.
I will give the students a 5-question pre-quiz. It will have 4 questions that will have them
circle the cause and underline the effect. The last question will have them write out their own
sentence showing that they can write a sentence that contains a cause and an effect.
APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of the lesson pre-assessment. (if applicable)

☒ Is your pre-assessment included at the end of this lesson plan?

Circle the causes and underline the effects in the following sentences

1. A tornado blew the roof off the house, and as a result, the family had to find another place
to live.
2. Sarah forgot to set her alarm, so she was late for school.
3. It snowed 6 inches last night, so school was cancelled today!
4. The cat arched his back and fluffed his tail because he was frightened.
Write your own sentence showing a cause and its effect
5.
Describe the timeline as to when you plan to administer the pre-assessment?
(Recommended timeline is a minimum of two days prior to teaching your lesson).

I will give the pre-assessment one week prior to giving the lesson (11/8/17).
Create and insert a table/chart/graph that shows the pre-assessment data results. (if applicable)

Insert an image of your table/chart/graph here.

Describe how the results of the pre-assessment (what the students have demonstrated they
know) will be used to design the lesson objectives, instruction, and post-assessment.

The students demonstrated that they know what part of the sentences are the cause and the
effect, but they confuse which on is the cause and which one is the effect. This helps me know
that I need to cover more what is a cause and what is an effect. Student #5 was not present for
the pre-assessment.
Post-Assessment: APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of the lesson post-assessment you will
use to measure students’ level of understanding toward the learning objectives after teaching
the lesson.

☒ Is your post-assessment included at the end of this lesson plan? Same as the pre-assessment.

APPENDIX: Include a copy of a Key/Product (completed by you, the teacher) which provides
a model of the desired outcome.

☒ Is your key included at the end of this lesson plan?

5. We ran out of milk so we went to the grocery store. (Example)

TECHNOLOGY
Describe the instructional and/or assistive technology that you plan to incorporate into the
lesson to enhance instruction and student learning.

We will be using the smartboard to review what cause and effect are. Also, after they have
completed their matching game, we will use it to review what their answers are.

ACCOMMODATIONS
Describe the accommodations/differentiation/modifications you will use to meet the needs of
all learners and accommodate differences in students’ learning, culture, language, etc. * Be
sure that these accommodations are based on what you identified/described in your contextual
information (Task I).

I will be wearing a microphone and the students will talk into a microphone when it is their
turn to talk so all students can hear clearly.

MANAGEMENT
Identify the management and motivational strategies you will use to meet student
behavioral/developmental needs in order to keep students on task and actively engaged
throughout the lesson.

I will redirect students when needed and review good behavior that I see in the class. I will
also be using callbacks to bring the students’ attention back to me. I also will be using active
participation strategies.

LESSON IMPLEMENTATION
“I Do”
(Teacher introduces lesson and models expected outcome of learning objectives)
Describe how you will activate student interest and present the learning objective in an
engaging way (this is your lesson opening).
I will open the lesson with: “Today we will be reviewing what you have learned about cause
and effect!”

I will begin the lesson with a smartboard presentation that has definitions and examples.
Describe how you will communicate (to students) how the objective is relevant to their lives.
I will communicate to the students that the objective is relevant to his/her lives by tying cause
and effect into their “Feelings Time”. (Feelings Time is when we go around the class room
and talk about how we are feeling and why. A perfect example of cause and effect).
Describe what instructional strategies you will use to model/explain/demonstrate the
knowledge and skills required of the objective. (cite theories/theorists)
I will redirect off task behavior, have reminders and review good behavior that I see, I will use
callbacks and direct instruction. I will also have the students developing their growth mindset
(Dr. Carol Dweck) and have explicit instruction (Dr. Archer).
Describe how you will check for students’ understanding before moving on to guided practice.
I will check for students understanding by having them each participate in the review
sentences in the presentation. I will have them each write down the cause and the effect of
each sentence on his/her write boards for me to see if they are able to determine them.
“We Do”
(Teacher engages students in guided practice)
Describe the learning activities you will use to provide students multiple opportunities to
practice the skills and content needed to meet the learning objective(s).
The students will be divided into pairs to complete the next activity. Once he/she have all been
paired up, the students will be doing a cause and effect matching game (attached below).
He/she will have parts of a sentence and they must decide if that part of the sentence is a cause
or if it is an effect. He/she must also match the two parts of the sentence to each other to form
a complete sentence.
Describe how you will check for students’ understanding before moving on to independent
practice.
I will check for students’ understanding by going over the answers with them. This will allow
me to see if 1. They are able to connect two parts of a sentence to each other and 2. To
determine if he/she are able to match a cause to its effect. I also will be walking around while
they are doing the matching activity and seeing if they need any help.
“You Do”
(Students engage in independent practice)
Describe what the students will do to independently practice the knowledge and skills required
by the lesson objectives? (this is the post-assessment)
The students will be working in pairs to complete the matching activity. He/she will receive
little to no help from me during this activity before we go over it as a class.
APPENDIX: Include a blank copy of your post-assessment.
☒ Is your BLANK COPY of the post-assessment included at the end of this lesson plan? Same
as pre-assessment.

Lesson Closing
Describe how you will reemphasize the lesson objective and any skills/content that were
taught in an interactive manner (whole/small group, etc.).
I will reemphasize the lesson objective by telling the students again that there is, and always
will be, cause and effect in their lives. For whatever they do, the effect is the result of what
they did (which is the cause). Again, I will tie in Feelings Time with cause and effect.
ANALYZE
(This portion may only be done after the post assessment is collected/scored.)
Describe the results of the Post-Assessment and be sure to address the following:
✓ Students’ progress from pre-to-post assessment. (if applicable)
✓ Factors that may have influenced the post assessment results.
✓ How the results of the post assessment highlight what areas of the lesson will require
re-teaching (if any).
If applicable, insert a table/chart/graph (below) that shows the post-assessment data results. If
you used the same document for both the pre and post assessments, it is strongly encouraged
that you show the comparison.
Insert an image of your table/chart/graph here.

Description: Most students improved between the pre- and post-assessment. Some factors that
may have influenced the post-assessment results is that I had just finished giving my lesson
when they took the post-assessment, so it was still fresh in their minds. The results of the post-
assessment highlight that some students still struggle with what part of the sentence is the
cause and what part of the sentence is the effect. If time would have allowed, I would have
spent more time going over examples and help them determine which part is the cause and
which part is the effect.

REFLECT
List and describe two things you feel you did well to plan, implement, or assess instruction
(successes).
The first thing that I did well was having my lesson plan completed days earlier so that I could
review it and make any changes that I thought would be needed. A few days before giving my
lesson, I took note of where the students were placed and who they were by. This helped me
estimate what students I would need to work with more and what students would be more
independent, which made it easier for me to focus more on what part of the lesson that would
require me to help students.
The second thing that I feel I did well was having everything prepared ahead of my lesson. I
made sure that I had everything lined up in the order that I would be going over things so that
when it came time to pass a paper out or to go over something, it was right there. This also cut
down on time being wasted because I didn’t have something organized. Having everything
lined up really helped the lesson go more smoothly than I was thinking it would go.
List and describe two things you feel were challenges during the planning, implementation
and/or assessment of the lesson.
The first thing that was challenge during the planning was finding an activity that would be
fun and engaging, but also helped them understand Cause and Effect more. There weren’t that
many activities that seemed to involve every student so I had to take a couple ideas and
combine them together to get an activity that was fun and helpful.
The second thing that was a challenge was knowing ahead of time how long they would take
on the activities. I had a limited amount of time to teach the lesson and not knowing how long
it would take them to complete everything was hard. I ended up finishing a few minutes early,
but wished I could have spent more time going over example sentences. If I would have had
more of an idea of how long they would have taken, it would have made it easier for me to
allow myself so much time for each part of my lesson.

List and describe two ideas for redesign you would make if you were to teach this lesson
again.
The first thing that I would redesign is my pre- and post-assessment. I didn’t get the results I
was hoping for and maybe changing the questions would help achieve those desired results.
The second thing I would redesign is my notebook presentation to include more example
sentences and work more on what is the cause in the sentence and what is the effect. That
seems to be where most of the struggle was.
