The odyssey

A Greek Epic by Homer

The Odyssey starts when the city of Troy fells.

It is a narrative poem that tells the adventures and doing of Odysseus, a Greek warrior. It is
about the story of his journey back to Ithaca, his home, during the ten-year period after the
Greek victory over the Trojans. The story takes place on Fantastic Island and foreign lands.

While Odysseus was sailing back home, he and his men encountered various disasters.

Some of them were the Cyclops, the one-eyed giants, who ate men – and they ate two of
Odysseus’ men before they could escape. Also, the temptresses, Circle and Calypso; the First
one tried to kill Odysseus and his men, but she couldn’t.

Calypso –a Daughter of the Titan Atlas –seduced Odysseus and kept him for years away from
his wife Penelope. Calypso loved Odysseus and wanted to make him her immortal husband.
But when Athena, the goddess of war, knew about this, she decided to intervene and made
Calypso let him go. There were also the Sirens, whose sweet singing enchanted the sailors and
made their ships crash into the rocks.

Meanwhile, everybody in Ithaca assumed the hero was dead, so there were some men trying
to convince Penelope to marry again. But she sensed her husband was alive. To delay her
answer, Penelope said that when she finished making the cloak for Odysseus’ father, she
would choose one of the men to marry her. She knitted in front of the men all day, but she
undid part of it while they were sleeping at night.
