b) State the assumptions of the analysis and design of doubly reinforced beams. (3)

c) What are the three different ways to provide shear reinforcement? Explain the method of
design of each of them. (6)

d) State the conditions to be satisfied for the curtailment of tension reinforcement when

g) Write the steps of design of combined footing with proper diagrams. (5)

UNIT-1

Q.2: a) What is permeability of concrete? Explain the causes and disadvantages of permeability.
How we can reduce the permeability of concrete. (6)

b) Draw stress-strain curve of concrete and show the following:

(i) Initial tangent modulus Ec,
(ii) Secant modulus Es at any point A on the stress-strain curve,
(iii) Tangent modulus Et at A and
(iv) Elastic and inelastic strain components of the total strain at A. (6.5)

Q.3: a) State and explain the significance of the six assumptions of design of flexural members
employing limit state of collapse. (6)

b) What are limit states? How many limit states are there? Should a structure be designed
following all the limit states? (6.5)

UNIT-2

Q.4: a) Name and explain the three different failure modes of reinforced concrete beams under
the combined effects of bending moment and shear force. (4.5)
b) Determine the maximum value of uniformly distributed imposed load and the tensile steel of a
singly reinforced rectangular beam 300 X 600 mm of clear span 8.0m simply supported on walls
of thickness 300 mm. Use M20 concrete and Fe500 steel. (8)

Q.5 Design a flanged beam using following data:

Thickness of flange=125mm,
Total depth = 650 mm,
Thickness of web = 300 mm
Spacing of beams = 4000 mm c/c,
Effective span = 12 m simply supported,
Effective cover = 75 mm,
Imposed loads = 12 kN/m2. Use Fe 415 steel and M 20 concrete. (12.5)

Q.6: Design the slab of 4X6m effective dimensions subjected to live load of 6kN/m2 in addition
to its dead load. The load of floor finish is 1 kN/m2. The corners of the slab are prevented from
lifting. Use M 20 concrete and Fe 415 steel. (12.5)

Q.7: Design a suitable dog-legged stair in a public building, to be located in a staircase 6m long,
3.2m wide and 3.7m high, with a door of 1.1m wide in each of the longitudinal walls. The doors
face each other and are located with their centers at a distance of 0.9m from the respective
corners of the staircase. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 steel. (12.5)

UNIT-4

Q.8: a) Design the reinforcement in a column of size 400 mm x 500 mm subjected to an axial
load of 2000 kN under service dead load and live load. The column has an unsupported length of
4.0 m and effectively held in position and restrained against rotation in both ends. Use M 25
concrete and Fe 415 steel. (6)

b) Design a short helically reinforced circular column with minimum amount of longitudinal
steel to carry a total factored axial load of 2000 kN using M 25 and Fe 415. (6.5)

Q.9: Design an isolated footing for a column 400 mm x 450 mm, having 20 bars of 20 mm
diameter carrying Pu = 1600 kN and Mu = 150 kNm. Assume that the moment is reversible. The
safe bearing capacity of the soil is 200 kN/m2 at a depth of 1 m from ground level. Use M
25concrete and Fe 415steel. (12.5)
