Melting Moments !!
Well we can tell you all the Front Sportsbar and Club talk this week has been about the
recent meltdowns. Serena Williams bought back memories of the many John McEnroe
spats with her firestorm meltdown verbal attack on Portuguese umpire Carlos Ramos in
the US Open. Now we understand the Tennis Umpires association are considering strike
action should Serena not apologise. With so much happening did Donald Trump tweet
something about building an Umpires Wall. Then the Collingwood Pres Eddie Every-
where got caught on camera in Perth having his good two bobs worth which was fine
really . But Eddie’s attack on Melbourne Radio Monday morning about the AFL’s finals
programming was the melted cream on the cake this week. Meanwhile in SANFL news
Marty Mattner is now off to the Crows coaching panel and that all happened in the blink
of an eye Sturt fans!!Could the North Adelaide Roosters 27 year drought be broken this
year ,we certainly think so and its great to see their supporters get behind them .
It's a long season at any level of football. Preseason
training starts early November and the hard slog
continued through the scorching Australian summer
and then onto the winter chills when the real season
was underway. There's times when you can't wait to
slip the boots on because you can't get enough of
the club and then there's times when you wake up
and wish for nothing more than to stay in bed.
In my day the escape from the pressure of winning
and performing came straight after a game. Sinking a
pint or two back at the club with the members and
your teammates was all that was needed. My favourite time was after training on a Mon-
day nights. It was just you and your teammates. In my Melbourne days the local establish-
ment was a pub called Naughtons. It was less than a K from the club and was mandatory
that you popped in after training. This was a chance to bond with your teammates over an
ale and hide from the outside pressures that could make or break a career.
First year and 200 plus game player mixed socially in a environment that the powers to be
knew that it was happening, but chose to ignore it. The benefits quite simply outweighed
the downsides. Lasting friendships were built on our Monday nights.
This now brings me onto the mad Mondays. Once a team has finished its season, players
meet up on the following Monday and let their hair down.
Only recently have players don fancy dress to add colour and humour to the day. This tradi-
tion isn't only embraced by AFL players but has gone right through all levels of Aussie foot-
ball and other codes of sport. The majority of players do the right thing. Dress up, drink up
then go to bed. Then there's a small minority that make fools of themselves. Alcohol can
make certain people do stupid, regretful things. Staying in control is my only advice I can
give teams celebrating their achievements. But that's easily said than done.
Loyalty to one club has become lost to this new generation of footballers. Maybe a few
more Monday nights and mad Mondays might install a bond that they don't wish to break.
After the first round of the AFL Finals only four entrants remain alive in the National
Knock Out Comp No 1 worth $2,500. In the National Knock Out Comp No2 there are still
19 live entrants chasing the $2,500 prize including two from S.A. being Stuey Telford
from the S.A. Hotel, Mount Gambier and Marty Baldry from the Enfield Hotel.
