STARTING CLASS RIGHT

1. I arrive on time every day. I am seated at my desk when the bell rings - I do not arrive to class
with a request to leave.

2. Once the bell rings, I am accessing the warm up. I do not need to wait to be told that there is a
warm up in Dropbox, and I am not chatting with friends.

1 2 3 4 5

3. During the warm up, I am an ACTIVE learner. That means that if there is a challenging question,
I use all my resources to properly answer the question - I refer to my notes or a classroom
textbook, or I ask for help. I do not leave items blank or an answer that I have doubts about,
unless the time for the warm up has elapsed.

WORKING WELL ON MY OWN AND STAYING FOCUSED

4. When reviewing activities, I am paying complete attention – when my teacher calls on me, I
know exactly what we are doing, and do not need to ask “what number are we on?”

1 2 3 4 5

5. I show that I am actively listening by maintaining eye contact and nodding my head from time to
time.

1 2 3 4 5

6. My questions demonstrate that I am intently listening.

1 2 3 4 5
7. When my teacher asks for volunteers to give responses, I raise my hand and am prepared to
give a clear response or contribution to the discussion at hand.

1 2 3 4 5

8. When we are engaged in “listen and repeat”, I repeat the words out loud. When we are
presented with a song, I am singing (nobody has to hear my voice as softly singing to myself is a
completely valid method of singing).

WORKING WELL WITH OTHERS, ALL OTHERS (not just friends) and taking initiative
to do more than “the minimum”

9. When working in groups, I am doing just that – working with my partner(s) on an assignment. I
am not working on my own but rather, using the activity as something to do together with my
partner who might need my help, or who might be of help to me.

10. When working in groups, I am working on the task at hand, and I am not engaged in
conversations with other groups.

11. When doing speaking activities in groups, if my group has completed the conversation questions
given to us, we either a) do those questions again and/or b) come up with our own questions -
but we never sit in silence, because the time given is for conversation in Spanish.

APPROPRIATE USE OF TECHNOLOGY

12. When in the lab, I am on the websites Senora has directed me to, and I spend no time on
other websites, including ASPEN (unless she has directed me there). Lab time is not for checking
grades or using unauthorized websites, and it is not a “cell phone safe” zone.

13. In the classroom and the lab, I use my iPad for the strict educational purposes for which it is
intended.

CONTRIBUTING TO AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE EVERYBODY CAN LEARN

14. I am not a distraction to my peers. If I arrive late, I do not call attention to myself. During class,
I do not talk out of turn or make noises that disrupt the classroom.

1 2 3 4 5

15. When I give a response, it is clear and loud enough for everyone to understand. This is not only
important for classroom participation but it is a public speaking element included in the BHS rubrics
and expectations.

COMMITMENT TO SPANISH IMMERSION X 2

16. You may speak in English during the warm ups and during group written activities as long as you
are discussing the work. Apart from that, I speak in Spanish all the time. If I cannot say it in
Spanish, I don’t say it at all. Of course if it’s something relevant to the classroom and I need to
express myself in English, I raise my hand and say “¿en inglés, por favor?”

17. Apart from cell phones BEING AGAINST THE RULES TO USE IN THE CLASSROOM, cell phones are
particularly problematic for Spanish Immersion. Any cell phone use will be assumed to be use in
ENGLISH (it would not be ok in Spanish to use your cell phone either, since it is against school
policy). Double jeopardy absolutely applies to cell phones in the classroom – this is a school
policy issue as well as a classroom participation detractor. Classroom participation is speaking
and contemplating in Spanish. Therefore, I do not use my cell phone during class. I show the
courtesy of not placing it on my desk or having it visibly available for my use. I understand that
blankly staring into my book bag is often a sign of cell phone use.

BEING PREPARED FOR THE DAYS’ ACTIVITIES and working until the bell

18. I have my CHARGED iPad, a black/blue pen or a standard pencil, and a red pen. If I have been
asked ahead of time to bring any other materials, I have those too.

1 2 3 4 5

19. I work until the bell rings. I do not pack my things up early in anticipation of the bell.
