TESTING PROCEDURE OF BALL VALVES

PROCEDURE NO.: TBV/01 Page: 1 of 2

REV.: 0 DATE:

SCOPE: This procedure covers the pressure testing of ball Valve.

REFERANCE STANDARDS: API 598, ASME B16.34, BS EN 12266-I.,BS 5351,ISO 17292

TESTING RIG:
The test rig shall be of such a design that the valves mounted are not subjected to any external
stresses, which result in varying the test results.

TEST FLUID:
The test fluid shall be tap water containing water soluble oil or rust inhibitor with temperature not
exceeding 38°C. Chloride content of water is to be checked once in three months which shall not
exceed 30ppm by mass (API 6D). For low pressure test the test medium shall be Air/Gas.

PRESSURE GUAGES:
Pressure gauges shall be of accuracy ±1.5% of full scale reading (API 6D). The gauges shall be
calibrated at intervals as decided by the organization.
The test pressure gauges shall have a range such that test pressure is within 25 to 75 percent of the
full range.

TESTS REQUIRED: Following are the test required in BALL valve,

1) Shell test- Hydro

2) High Pressure closure test – Hydro
3) Low Pressure closure test – Gas or Pneumatic.

PRESSURE TEST PROCEDURE:

 HYDROSTATIC SHELL TEST:
For shell test valve shall be in partial open condition, Gland tightened and both the ends are
blanked with testing flanges. Hydrostatic pressure is applied from one end to the rated pressure for
the applicable test duration. Throughout this, supply pressure shall be isolated and shall be
stabilized prior to test duration. Test pressure shall be monitored during the test duration by using
pressure gauges.
This test is carried to detect the leakage / seepage from the boundary of walls of body, bonnet/
adaptor, body- adaptor joint, gasket joints and Leakage through packing. Any leakage / seepage
from the body, adaptor will be cause of rejection and no casting leakages are acceptable during the
test duration.

 HIGH PRESSURE CLOSURE SEAT TEST:-

This is optional test and shall be carried out only if asked.
This test is carried out to check the leakage of valve from seat. This test is carried out in fully closed
valve and pressure is applied from one side and leakage can be monitored from open end.
Throughout this, supply pressure shall be isolated and shall be stabilized prior to test duration. Test
pressure shall be monitored during the test duration by using pressure gauges.
No visible leakage is allowed during the test duration.

 LOW PRESSURE CLOSURE SEAT TEST:-

This procedure is same as high-pressure closure test but the test fluid shall be clean air or gas. After
pressurizing the valve for the rated pressure from one end by keeping other end open to
atmosphere is filled with sufficient water in flow bore area to detect the leakage in terms of bubbles.
Throughout this, supply pressure shall be isolated and shall be stabilized prior to test duration. Test
pressure shall be monitored during the test duration by using pressure gauges.
No visible leakage is allowed during the test duration.
After testing valve shall be cleaned and dried and shall blanked with end protectors.
 NOTE: - During closure testing, the use of a supplemental leveraging device to aid in achieving a passing
leakage rate is not acceptable.
