Procedure for Force calibration in Lever Type Single

Specimen Creep Testing Machine

Machine in which force calibration: Lever type single specimen Mayes creep
To be done testing machine

Instuments to be used for calibration: i) Proving Ring of 3 Ton capacity. Serial No. 1564-74
with dial gauge Sr. No. CFS 011, Mitutoyo make
along with adaptors and pull rods
ii) Calibrated thermometer for temperature
measurement
iii) Mercury level indicator
iv) Calibrated digital humidity meter

Other requirements: Loose weights weighed in a calibrated digital weighing

machine, cotton for cleaning knife edge, anti-
corrosive liquid reagent if required, cotton cloth, allen
keys, Register for noting down the calibration reading,
Scale, calculator, pen, pencil, etc.

Tracability : National Physical Laboratory, New Delhi, India

Force calibration data verification of the above Proving Ring at NPL, New Delhi is done in
every two years.

Steps for Calibration

1. Clean the knife edge with cotton, anti corrosive liquid reagent( if required). Remove all
the unnecessary items from machine. Clean the machine by cotton cloth.

2. Move the furnace from its original position in order to make space for connection of
proving ring. Make sure that no part of the furnace does not touch the proving ring.
3. Make sure that the main switch of the machine is in “OFF” position and on the
machine, the automatic lever levelling switch is in “manual” position.

4. Fix the upper loading bar to the adaptor(grip), positioned above the furnace. Raise
the furnace until the lower end of the upper loading bar is coming out of the bottom of
the furnace. The furnace will stay in position supported by counter balance weights
inside the front columns.

5. Fix the specimen adaptor (grip) to the lower end of the upper loading bar.

6. Make sure that the lower loading bar is not fixed to the machine. If fixed, remove the
lower loading bar by unscrewing the lower screw cap.

7. Fix a standard specimen into the upper loading bar specimen adaptor(Grip).

8. Ensure that there is no weight on the weight pan

9. Unlock the counter balance weight on the front of the lever and adjust the position of
the weight until the lever underside is level i.e. at right angle to the loading bar
assembly. Levelling can be checked by mercury level indicator.

10. Remove specimen and connect the the Proving Ring to the upper loading bar with
Adaptor/ grips.

11. Fix the lower loading bar to the lower end of the Proving ring with adaptor/grips.

12. Connect the lower loading bar by tightening lower screw cap of the lower loading bar
to the lead screw.

13. Put the main switch in “ON” position and bring the automatic lever levelling switch is
in “auto” position.

14. The motor will bring the lever in levelled position (i.e.at the right angles to the
loading bar assembly) automatically. This can be checked by mercury level indicator.
15. Using lever ratio calculate the load required for loading pan for maximum 3T load
And put that load on loading pan and in this position tighten all the grips, adaptors etc.
in each connection in such a way that there is no loose connection. This is called
pre-loading. Remove all the loads from loading pan.

16. Set the dial gauge spindle to appropriate position range which can accommodate for
all the readings of the dial gauge without any disturbing dial gauge.

17. Set the dial gauge long hand needle to ‘Zero” position

18. Using lever ratio , calculate the load required for loading pan for each loading
and unloading step of calibration as per force calibration data of NPL, New Delhi.
Measure and prepare the weights for each loading and unloading steps of calibration.

19. Put the weights on loading pan for each loading step and note down the dial gauge
Reading for each loading step in the register. Similarly, note down the dial gauge
reading for each unloading step. If the capstan handle rotates after any of the loading
and unloading steps, take the reading only when the capstan handle stops.

20. Take the temperature reading of the atmosphere by means of the calibrated
thermometer. Take the humidity reading by digital humidity meter.

21. Do the temperature correction of 0.027% to the calibration data for each degree
difference in the working temperature from the calibration temperature where no
temperature compensation is already done( Correction will be positive for rise and
negative for fall in temperature.

22. Plot Load Vs. Deflection for the calibration data and compare with the standard data.
If the deviation is within +/- 1% then calibration data is accepted. Alternately, calibration
data for each loading or unloading step can be checked and compared with standard. If
the deviation is within +/-1%, then data is accepted.

23. The interval between two consecutive calibration for the same machine is two years.
