Gq ch Detroit Hoist OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS — READ CAREFULLY BEFORE PUTTING HOIST INTO OPERATION — Your new Detroit Hoist has been thoroughly tested and inspected before shipment. With reasonable care and periodic maintenance as outlined in the following, your Detroit Hoist should give you years of excellent service. Keep these instructions in @ safe place available to operating personnel. These instructions cover electric and air hoists. Core of mechanical components is the same for both types. Instructions epplying to motors and controls will be found on attached sheets. It is recommended that the customer obtain @ copy of ANSI 630.16 Safely Code for Hoists, obtainable from The American Society of Mechanical Engineers, United Engineering Center, 345 East 47th St., New York, New York 10017. This code covers installation, maintenenee, inspection and safe operation of overhead hoists. INSTALLAY 1 After hoist 2 Remove wood wedge from between drum and hoist frame. in place, make sure all nuts and bolts removed during installation ore properly tightened. 7 3~check hoist wire rope to be sure that it lies property in the grooves of the drum and sheaves. 4—Check level of lubricant in all gear housings and add proper type oil if level is below oil level plug. 5—Connect hoist to power supply. Push UP button momentarily to determine direction of hook travel. Direction of travel MUST agree with control indication. 6~Check upper limit switch by lowering bottom block midway to floor. Push UP button and when hook begins 10 rise, lift limit arm manually to insure switch interrupts the upward motion. If this does not occur, disconnect hoist from power supply and check all electrical connections. Never operate hoist without a properly operating limit switch. If hoist is also equipped with a geared upper and lower limit switch, check to see that the upward motion of the hook stops before it reaches the paddle limit. The paddle limit switch becomes a back-up limit in case of failure of the geared limit. Check lower limit to insure that af least one wrap of cable remains on drum when hook stops. 7 ~ Check brakes. Raise and lower hook without load at first and then with lead, stopping the motion ot several points to test the operation of the brakes. 8 — After hoist has been in service for a few hours, all bolts and wire rope cable clamps should be retightened MAINTENANCE & REPAIR: 1=When it becomes necessary to repair the heist, itis important that all items under “Installation” be checked to insure proper installation. 2 Use only replacement parts authorized or provided by Detroit Hoist & Machine Company. 3 Any modifications or alterations made to this hoist without approval of Detroit Hoist & Machine Company will void warranty. 4 —When replacing wire rope, be certain it meets the specifications of that originally furnished. Be certain thot all clips tre installed correctly with U-Bolt part of clip on the short or dead end of rope and are properly tightened. Retighten clamp nuts after a few hours of service. 5 IFhoist has a geared upper end lower limit switch, it may be necessary to reset after repairs or wire rope replacement. ‘CHECK THIS CAREFULLY. OPERATION: Any hoist can be dangerous in the hands of a careless operator. The following guides should be followed in order to derive the most satisfactory results from this equipment, OPERATOR SHALL: Fomiliarize himself withthe equipment and its proper _ Test controls ond limit switch before beginning a shift Be certain that oll personnel are clear before starting hoist Determine that rope Is properly seoted in drum and sheaves, ond ropes are not twisted abou! each other Transport hook fo load in such @ manner as fo prevent swinging. Observe any warning signs on hoist or controls Avoid plugging, inching, and quick reversals. This type of operation can drestically shorten the life of the motor and controller, and cause excessive wear on the broken Center lood hook over load before attempting to lift load Inspect wire rope daily. See insruetions shown under Wire Rope” OPERATOR SHALL NOT Divert his attention while operating hoist. ++ .Overload hoist, Wrap hoisting rope around load. Transport loads over the heads of workmen. Permit anyone to stand under loaded hook, Use hoist for side loading except when specifically ‘authorized to do so. -Rotate drum in lowering direction beyond a point where less than two wraps of rope remain on drum. sleave © load suspended in the air at the end of o work shift, or for extended and unattended periods during regular working hours. -Use limit switch as a means of stopping hoist. THIS IS AN EMERGENCY DEVICE ONLY. Use heist to lift human beings. Remove ony warning or capacity plates from this equipment, -Make ony repairs or alterations to this equipment without specific approval of his supervisor. Hoists may even be hazardous when not in use unless safety precautions are token. For instance: 1 — Keep load block sofely overhead when not in use. The bright color of the bottom block will tend to discourage collision and avoid injuries. However, ‘obove the floor when not in use. is recommended that the block be kept at a height of at least seven f 2 Always anchor outdoor hoists when unattended. The load block makes © convenient anchor. LOAD BRAK! The Weston type broke ordinarily requires little attention. Eventually it may become necessary to replace the brake disc. Refer to the paris diagram for your particular hoist model which gives assembly ond adjustment instru: WIRE ROPE: All running ropes in continuous service should be visuolly inspected once each working day. A thorough inspection of all ropes should be made ot least once a month, or before using © hoist which hes been idle for a month or more, Remaining strength in a used rope must be evaluated carefully, because safety of rope opert ion depends upon this Femaining strength. Following are some guide posts to determining time for replacement. SIGNS OF DETERIORATION 1 = Reduction of rope diameter because of: ©. Loss of core support b. Corrosion € Worn outside wires 2- Broken outside wires NOTE ~ To detect broken wires, run rope through & cloth in the hand. It wil snag on broken wires. 3-Worn outside wires 4~Corroded or broken wires at end connections: cor roded, cracked, bent or worn end connections 5 ~ Severe kinking, crushing, eutting or unstranding (CAUSE FOR REPLACEMENT. — Reduction in nominal diameter os follows: ‘More than 1/64" to and including 5/16" ‘More than 1/32” for 3/8" to 1/2" diameters inclusive ‘More than 3/64” for 9/16" 10 3/4” diameters inclusive 2—Twelve randomly distributed broken wires in one rope lay. Four broken wires in one strand in one rope lay. 3 Wear of one-third of the original diometer of outside individual wires. 4~Any of these conditions indicates need for replace- ment 5~When such kinking, ete, results in distortion of rope Evidence of any heat damage from any cause is sufficient reason for questioning rope safety ‘and considering replacement. HOOK: CCheck daly for nicks, gouges, cracks ond signs of deforming, pulling aport or twisting. More than a 10 degree twist Fee ind SF'hock’of excessive threat opening are signs hat Rook should be replaced. Any hook that is twisted or Mer eres ye ihroot opening indicates abuse or overloading of the hoist. In ths event, ts suggested thot care be token IS Syoid everlocding and ebuse fo prevent ceidents ond fo lengthen the useful life ofthe ots. ELECTRIC HOISTS ‘MOTOR: The hoist motor, and trolley motor if any, are high torque, intermittent duty hoist type, developing 275% to 300% starting torque. These motors will ordinarlly pull 1 to 24 times normal full load amps momentarily when starting. If ny overload devices are used, it is necessary to size them to handle this high inrush current. Motors will be generally, either single speed or 2-speed, squirrel cage or slip ring wound rotor type. Being totally enclosed and lifetime lubricated, litle attention is required, In the case of slip ring motors, it is recommended the brushes be inspected periodically. It is wise to carry a spare sot of brushes on hand. MOTOR BRAK\ Brake is either solenoid or magnetic operated, connected to release when motor is running and set when motor is shut off. Except for hoists with dynamic control, this brake is intended only for stopping motor quickly and not for holding load. Magnetic dise brakes ore self adjusting and require no adjustment during the life of the brake disc. Solenoid operated shoe brakes should be maintained and adjusted according to the manufacturers recommendations shown on the repair parts sheet, It is recommended that spare brake disc and/or brake shoes be kept on hand. PUSHBUTTON: Pushbuttons are of the momentary contact type. Care should be taken to prevent pushbutton station from swinging inte walls or other objects and from being immersed in tanks of liquid, Check to see that the safety strain chain is intact and adjusted so that any pulling effort is not on the control cable, If the enclosure is broken or damaged, it should be replaced immediately. UP LMr A Paddle type, in which the load block makes mechanical contact with weight or paddle, is normally furnished. When 50 specified, @ geared limit is also used which provides both an upper and lower limits. The geared limit switch is, ‘operated through a direct mechanical connection to the hoist gearing. The geared limit should be set to stop the load hook with the paddle limit serving as a back-up limit to operate only in case the geared limit fails. Up-limit operation should be checked periodically for proper operation. imit is Intended for emergency use and should not be used regularly as a means of stopping hoist in up direction. AIR HOISTS MOTOR: Air Motors may be either multi-cylinder piston type or rotary vane type. Your repair parts data will show which motor ‘applies 10 your hoist and will also provide specific maintenance and operating instructions for that particular motor. ‘CONTROLS Your hoist, unless a special remote control application, has either rope operated controls or pendant push button controls, ROPE OPERATED: Speed of motor depends on amount valve is opened either direction. Valve is a spring return to neutral type. PUSHBUTTON; Speed of moter depends on amount thumb control levers ore depressed. Volve at motor is pilot operated by the pendant. Operation of valve is described by eccompanying dats. Air escaping from pendant while motor UP UMTS Normally with rope operated controls, the up-limit is mechanically connected to rope lever and action of block striking up-limit lever will return rope lever to neutral position. With push button control, the up-limit is lever operated by the load block, opening a valve which bleeds pilot air from main valve allowing valve to close. Both types of up-limits should be checked periodically for proper operation. IW is recommended that @ Filter-Lubricator be used with all air equipment. These devices should be as close to operating components as possible, All air equipment is designed for use on 80 to 100 PSI pressure. Be sure air ines and hoses are properly sized to deliver edequate volume of air at required pressure. LUBRICATION; Oil levels should be checked before putting hoist in service. The gear housings are enclosed, providing a liberal oil reservoir from which oll gears ond bearings are splash lubricated. Check cil level periodically. Drain and refill at least once every 12 months, more often if operating conditions ore severe. We recommend that a good grade of AGMA-5-EP oil be used in gear cases for temperatures to 0° Fahrenheit, + except in the case of worm drives which should use AGMA No. 7 Compounded Type Oil, Electric motors, unless specific instructions to the contrary, are lifetime lubricated and require no special attention, Trolley wheels ond pillow block ore usually sealed bearings which are pressure lubricated. Care should be taken not to over lubricate, thereby rupturing the bearing seals. Use a good grade of ball bearing grease. On open trolley and drive wheel gearing 2 good grade of open geer compound should be used and applied at regular intervals to provide proper lubrication Wire rope should be maintained in a well lubricated condition to reduce internal friction and to prevent corrosion. Those sections located over sheaves or otherwise hidden during inspection and maintenance procedures, require special attention when lubricating, We recommend that a good grade of heavy duty wire rope lubricant be used. We suggest that you contact your local lubrication engineer for special or unusual conditions, WARRANTY: All Detroit Hoists and Cranes are covered by 1 year warranty covering defective parts ond workmanship.
