• Eligibility for joining Indian Diploma in Critical Care course (IDCC)
o MD Medicine/Chest/Anaesthesia

o DNB Medicine/Chest/Anaesthesia

o MS General Surgery/Orthopedics

o Diploma in Anaesthesia/Diploma in Chest diseases/Diploma in Orthopedics.

o The base qualifications must be from a recognized university or MCI/State Medical Council equivalent. Teachers must
ascertain eligibility of candidates before forwarding applications to the course coordinator. In case of any doubt
controversy regarding eligibility the course coordinator should be consulted. Decisions by the ISCCM executive
committee in this regard will be final & binding.

• Selection Criteria –As per ISCCM

o “IDCC” candidates will be selected as below by the respective institutes based on their eligibility which should be
confirmed by the individual teachers & institutes

o “IFCC” candidates are selected after they pass the “IDCC” exam by recognized centres

o Candidates shall be selected by the ISCCM recognized teachers of the institution

o The list of recognized institutes/teachers and their contact details are available on the ISCCM website www.isccm.org
or are available on request from the ISCCM Course Coordinator

o Candidates need to apply to the recognized institute of their choice directly (forms for IDCC and IFCC courses are
available on website)

o Candidates will require to be paid a salary/stipend as per the rules of the institute where they are appointed. This
should be no different from the salary/stipend that other similarly qualified employees receive at that institute.
o Invitation/Advertisement for applications, appointment and registration for the course must be done before 1st April
of that academic year. Candidates may be registered mid-year & the registration process for such candidates should
be completed by 31st August of that academic year

• Syllabus/ Competencies

o The candidate must have gained experience in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with serious medical and
surgical disease including coronary artery disease and neurosurgical disease. The present document defines the
minimum content of these 2 years of training in critical care medicine and deals with two aspects – The knowledge
about pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of a series of disease processes and a list of specific procedures
and interventions that the candidate must be able to perform. The ISCCM CoBaTrICE competencies have been
compiled in the CoBaFolio record which should be filled by all IDCC & IFCC candidates.

• Theoretical Knowledge
o The critical care specialist must understand the pathophysiology, construct a differential diagnosis and apply the
appropriate prophylactic and therapeutic interventions in the following disorders. This list is not comprehensive.

o Respiratory
Management of airways (including respiratory arrest, upper airways obstruction, smoke or burns airways damage),
pulmonary edema, adult respiratory distress syndrome and hypercapnic respiratory failure, severe asthma, chest
trauma, respiratory muscle disorders, thoracic surgery.

o Cardiovascular
Haemodynamic instability and shock, cardiac arrest acute myocardial infarction and unstable angina severe heart
failure, common arrhythmias and conduction disturbance, specific cardiac disorders (cardiomyopathies, valvular heart
disease, atrial or ventricular septal defects, myocarditis), cardiac tamponade, pulmonary embolism, aortic dissection,
hypertensive crisis, peripheral vascular diseases. Cardiovascular surgery. Cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR)
Training in Basic Life Support (BLS), and Advance Life Support (ALS)

o Neurology
Coma, head trauma, intracranial hypertension, cerebrovascular accidents, cerebral vasospasm, meningo-encephalitis,
acute neuromuscular disease (including myasthenia & Guillain Barre syndrome), post anoxic brain damage, acute
confusional states, spinal cord injury, neurosurgery, brain death.

o Renal
Oliguria. Acute renal failure, renal replacement therapy

o Metabolic & Nutritional


Fluid electrolyte and acid-base disorders, endocrine disorders (including diabetes), nutritional requirements,
monitoring of nutrition.

o Haematological
Disseminated intravascular coagulation and other coagulation disorders, haemolytic syndromes, acute and anaemia,
blood component therapy, immune disorders.
o Infections
Severe infection due to aerobic and anaerobic bacteria, viruses, fungal and parasites, nosocomial infection, infection
in the immunocopromised, tropical disease, antimicrobial therapy, immunotherapy.

o Gastro-intestinal
Inflammatory bowel diseases, pancreatitis, acute and chronic liver failure, prevention and treatment of acute G.I.
Bleeding (including variceal bleeding) peritonitis, mesenteric infarction, perforated viscus, bowel obstruction,
abdominal trauma, abdominal surgery.
