COURSE : MANAGEMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL ENGINEERING

1.0 SYNOPSIS

This course discusses and explains the problems of environmental pollution and explain the
principles of environmental management. In addition to the importance and methods of
assessment and environmental audits are also discussed.

2.0 OBJECTIVE

At the end of this course, students will be able to:

• Identify the important elements in the environment.

• Identify sources of pollution of water, air and soil, and to determine ways to reduce their
impact on the environment.

• Identify solid and hazardous waste management and technologies involved in reducing
the risk to the environment.

water pollution, 'Point-' and 'Non-point source Pollution', factors affecting
runoff pollution, pollution control, pollution of lakes and rivers, swamp land
and functions, environmental pollutants marine and human activities.

5. Water Treatment: Water quality, definition and management of water 3


resources systems, water treatment systems, softener plants and refineries.

6. Wastewater Treatment: The Nature of wastewater / sewage, wastewater 3


management system, on-site wastewater disposal systems, centralized
wastewater treatment system.

7. Air Pollution: Gas and layers of the atmosphere, pollutants factors, primer 3
and secondary pollutants, “asbutfotokimia”, acid rain, ozone depletion, the
greenhouse effect, air pollution control technologies, management of
ambient air quality.

categories of soil contamination, disposal of hazardous waste / toxic.

collection and transport and transfer of solid waste, the types of transfer
stations, an economic comparison of alternative transport solid waste.

10. Solid Waste Processing and Recovery: recycling, resource recovery for 3
energy, composting, incineration, sanitary landfill.

11. Hazardous Waste Management: soil profile, the effects of soil acidity, soil 3
pollution category, the concept of "Cradle-to-Grave', need for treatment,
storage and disposal, hazardous waste management, hazardous waste
recycling, hazardous waste treatment technologies, storage and disposal of
long short and long term.

12. Act and the Legal Environment: The Acts of the surrounding environment, 3
the history of Malaysian environmental legislation, legislation directly and
indirectly, the legal regulation of inland waters and marine, air pollution
control legislation, regulation and management of hazardous waste, the
Environmental Quality Act 1974 and its amendments.

13. Role of Government Administration and Environment: The Role of the 3


Federal Government, State and Local, the history of the DOE, the DOE
administrative management, the role of the Environmental Quality Council
(EQC).

Environmental Impact Assessment: EIA procedure in Malaysia, a detailed


initial assessment, the concept of integrated project planning, EIA approval
process.
