Halloween: Did you know...?

When the Christians first came to Britain they made 1 November, All Saints Day, when they had All
Hallows Mass. The night before became known as All Hallows E’en which became Hallowe’en.

The colours orange and black are associated with Hallowe’en. It is thought that orange is for the end of
harvest, and black is for death.

Pumpkins are actually squashes and come from the same family as the cucumber. Over 99% of pumpkins
sold are used as carved lanterns.

Black cats protect witches powers, but to counter this the ringing of a bell keeps away evil spirits.

Hallowe’en is on October 31st, the last day of the Celtic calendar. It was originally a pagan holiday,
honoring the dead.

The movie ‘Halloween” was made in only 21 days in 1978 on a very limited budget. The character Laurie
Strode, played by Jamie Lee Curtis was named after John Carpenter’s first girlfriend.

If you see a spider on Hallowe’en, it is the spirit of a loved on watching over you.

The custom of trick or treating probably has several origins. During Samhain, the Druids believed that the
dead would play tricks on mankind and cause panic and destruction. They had to be appeased, so country
folk would give the Druids food as they visited their homes.

Baked Chocolate Cheesecake
• 150g dark chocolate, 70% cocoa
solids
• 275g caster sugar
• 225g digestive biscuits, crushed
• 160g Butter, melted
• 2 tbsp Sugar
• 500g full-fat soft cheese
• 142ml carton of Soured cream
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
• 4 eggs

Method
1. Preheat the oven to 170°C/gas mark 3.
2. Melt the chocolate and 125g of sugar in a
bain-marie (a bowl suspended over a pan of
simmering water). Set aside to cool slightly.
3. Meanwhile make the biscuit base by mixing
together the crushed digestives, melted butter
and sugar. Press into a 20cm spring-form tin.
4. In a large bowl, beat the cream cheese,
remaining caster sugar, soured cream, vanilla
extract and eggs until well-mixed.
5. Pour half the mixture into the bowl with the
melted chocolate and mix in thoroughly.
6. Spoon in alternate amounts of the plain vanilla
mixture and the chocolate one onto the biscuit
base. Bake for 50 minutes until firm, cool before
serving.

Abbeyfield Orpington Society is a non-profit making charity providing sheltered

accommodation for elderly residents who no longer wish to live alone. Our four
homes, located in Tower Road offer companionship, independence, security and
privacy and remove the stress of maintaining and running your own property. The
inclusive charges are very modest.
Each of our houses has a resident Housekeeper and, in their absence a relief
Housekeeper, who provides two main meals daily, as well as coffee in the lounge
mid-morning. There is always someone on hand in an emergency, 24 hours a day.
We also offer respite stays - ideal for families
that are going on holiday but are worried how their loved ones will
cope on their own.
We are not a care home and anyone with low to medium dependency
from all sectors of the community is invited to apply.

Trick or “frankly you’re too old for this!”
I
love a bit of Hallowe’en. I love all that All Hallows
Eve stuff, a bit of broomstick action, a spot of
pumpkin carving. I am a sucker for those aisles
of supermarket Hallowe’en trash - I am the woman
who bought a flashing pumpkin mug the day after
Hallowe’en reduced to 10p - and I love those plates
with spiders and plastic jewels set into them. Bags
of fun-size chocolate bars are a magnificent excuse
to eat twice as many as usual, and I can’t resist a
spot of ghoulish baking. BUT. And you knew there
would be a BUT .... there should be a maximum trick
or treating age. We are forced into trick-or-treating
because hardly anyone has Hallowe’en
parties any more (back in my day it was
ghost stories, green and blackcurrant
jelly and a square of dairy milk if you
were lucky) but in these days of
excess, if a child does not have a
plastic pumpkin bucket full to the
brim with sweets, your car will be
covered in eggs and flour come
the witching hour! Children over
14 should not really be wandering
the streets in rubber wolf masks
taking handfuls of sweets off your
spider plates. It’s not on. HANDFULS,
they take! HANDFULS! this year I am
going to thwart them by making little cakes
with courgette in them - just for the teenage trick or
treaters.
Last year, the day before Hallowe’en, I was strolling
through a well-known high street department store
and saw, with great excitement, ADULT Hallowe’en
costumes! Thinking that this would make my children
wee with laughter, I splashed out and bought a
funky witch frock and hat. When I shimmied the
children off to school the next morning, I got to
work. I am a great fan of traditional Hallowe’en
fun, peeled grapes for eyeballs and all that, so I
lovingly prepared our favourite Hallowe’en treats -
blood clot jelly (thank you Nigella) and set up our
favourite games - apple bobbing, wink murder and
eating currant buns off a string. I put our special
orange light bulb in the porch, and dangled Bones,
my old cardboard skeleton from the front door and
trotted off to put my costume on. It was already
getting dark as I painted green face paint all over
my cheeks, ready to pick the children up from
school. Excitedly I threw on my cape, and strode

out to school. I did get some strange looks - but
people can be so boring, I thought, as I marched up
the road. I swung open the playground gates, so
excited - my children were going to be so surprised!
“You’re early!” said the school secretary, and I
beamed - “always early to pick up my little darlings,”
I said, and laughed as I wandered towards the
building. And then it began to rain. I shimmied
under a tree, waving happily to my school run
pals excitedly miming witchy clawed hands as
they hooted with laughter, clapping in
delight. Ooooh I’m a fantastic mother,
I thought, WHO ELSE would dress up for
Hallowe’en?!? definitely none of THESE
other mothers, I thought, looking
round to see lots of women giving
me very odd disdainful looks. The
rain got heavier, blowing sideways
in the wind - and my orange wig
kept blowing into my mouth. Why
is it that the children always come
out late on the days when you
want them out on time?!
My gloriously pointy hat was beginning
to wilt. My orange and black stripey
tights were getting soggy and I could feel
a trickle of green paint sliding down my neck. At
last the school door opened, and a steady trickle of
children ran out to their waiting, umbrella-wielding
mothers. Eventually my two appeared, and burst
into giggles when they saw me, mock spell casting
theatrically at the sky.
“AAAAAH young ‘uns,” I said, sounding rather too
much like a Cornish pirate, “how be your day at
school? are you ready for Hallowe’en?!”
They looked at me with great respect. “Oooh
yes, and it was a great idea to have a practise run
Mummy!”
“What do you mean a practise run?” I asked
indignantly! “Before Hallowe’en next week!”
they said earnestly. “Great idea Mum,” said my
daughter grabbing my hand. “Can I try your tights
on?”
