Smart-UPS VT, MGE Galaxy 3500 and AIS 10-40 kVA Global Service Manual 9
Life Cycle Monitoring
LCM consists of different kind of reminders based on time duration embedded and managed by the UPS
and which are triggered at a dedicated time during the life of the product. Three kind of reminders are
managed:

• Start-up
• Warranty
• Technical Check (wearing parts theoretical lifetime)
Life Cycle Monitoring is managed by the UPS Tuner.

Start-up

When the UPS has been started for 5 days it reaches the start up. This activates the start up message
“Order Startup Check” to be displayed on the user interface and the Warranty and Technical Check
counting starts.

Start-up means that power supplies of the UPS has been ON for 5 consecutive days even if inverter is
ON or OFF.

If the UPS is started for 3 days, then stopped (de energized) for 2 hours, and then started again, the start-
up counter is reset after this last start.

5 consecutives days means exactly: 24hours* 5 = 120 hours without any power off of power supplies.

FSE action: Proceed with the UPS start-up free of charge.

Note: When the UPS Tuner is connected to the UPS, the start-up reminder is automatically
disabled, and no actions are required.

Warranty

Three months before the warranty expries, the message “Warranty Expiring” is displayed on the user
interface. This display message is displayed three times with an interval of 30 days as default. This
setting can be changed via the UPS Tuner.

FSE action: Promote the advantage contract to the customer and acknowledge the pending reminder
permanently.

Technical Check

This reminder is common to several wearing parts like AC caps, DC caps, fans, etc. The display message
is displayed every 48 months as default. This setting can be changed via the UPS Tuner.

FSE action: Proceed to the preventive maintenance operations. In addition to the standard checks,
replace fans, reset the reminder counter, and restart it.

In case of power module replacement, the elapsed time parameters need to be recovered by using the
capture function in UPS Tuner and then restored in the LMC Settings menu.

Upgrade the Power Module Firmware

The UPS consists of three types of firmware for:

• Power modules
• Powerview
• Network Management Card

Prepare for the power module firmware upgrade

Caution: For the system to allow a firmware upgrade the UPS must be in one of the three
following operation modes:
- The UPS must be off (load disconnected), or
- The UPS must be in internal mechanical bypass (not available in parallel operation), or
- The UPS must be in external Q3 bypass.

Caution: One UPS unit cannot be in maintenance bypass mode in a parallel configuration
while the other UPS units are running in normal operation. Parallel units are forced into
bypass if one UPS unit has been requested into bypass or into Q3 bypass. A unit can be
isolated from a parallel system and upgraded, but this is not recommendable.

Upgrade the power module firmware

Warning: This procedure is only to be completed by trained service personnel.

Warning: It is recommended that the critical load is transferred to maintenance bypass

before connecting the cable to the service port.

Warning: Rebooting the computer connected to the service port or accidentally

entering commands other than the available menu choices may result in unexpected
operation or shutdown of the UPS. For this reason it is recommended that the UPS is
disconnected from the critical load during this procedure. There is no safer
communication option between the UPS and the FSE laptop as only one service port is
available.

3. After completed download procedure compare the hex file checksum with the checksum in the
filename.
4. If the checksum is correct, select: 1. Erase FLASH & program new code.
5. When the display shows are you sure [Y/N], confirm programming by pressing Y.
6. The system will now reprogram FLASH in three steps.
Note: When the communication is interrupted, go to Communications, and then select to

Installing the Parallel Communication Box

Caution: If a customer wants to modify an old single UPS system to a parallel system some
changes are necessary. Among others, the power module has to be replaced with a new
version to be able to install the parallel box and run the UPS in parallel. However, it has been
decided by product management not to include this procedure, because only a very few cases
can be expected. Whenever the situation occurs, please contact the configuration team for a
customized solution.

See the parallel installation manual delivered with the parallel configuration on how to route
the cables.

Note: The Parallel Communication Box is only available for the Smart-UPS VT Series and

Modes

The UPS has different operation modes. If the installation includes a Maintenance Bypass Panel (MBP),
an external maintenance bypass operation mode will also be available.

Normal operation. The UPS converts utility/mains power to conditioned power for the connected load.

Battery operation. The UPS provides power to the connected load from its internal and (if available)
external batteries for a finite period. The UPS transfers to battery operation if the supply of utility/mains
power fails, or is outside the pre-defined limits.

Internal bypass operation . Internal bypass keeps the load supplied with utility/mains power during
maintenance of the UPS power sections. In internal bypass operation, utility/mains power is sent directly
to the connected load bypassing all internal UPS functions and filters. Battery back-up is not available in
internal bypass operation even though the batteries are in place.

External maintenance bypass operation. The UPS can be connected to an optional external MBP.
When activated, this panel bypasses the entire UPS enclosure, feeding utility/mains power directly to the
load. An activated external MBP completely isolates the UPS and allows maintenance to be performed.
An external MBP is mandatory if the UPS is running in parallel.

Optional parallel operation. The connected load is powered by multiple UPS units to increase system
redundancy or to increase power. The internal mechanical bypass lever is not available.
