CONSIDERACIONES GEOLOGICO—PETROLERAS
RESUMEN
ABSTRACT
Burgos Basin is a gas bearing geologie province of Tertiary age, located in Northejist Mexico,
just south of the border across from Texas in the United States of America. Burgos has an apro-

ximate area of 49,800 km^. T h e T e r t i a r y Basin extends to the north into the R i o G r a n d e E m -
bayment; to the east, u p to the continental margin of the Gulf of Mexico; and to the west, the
basin covers the eastern portion of the Burro-Picachos Mesozoic Platform.
It has been estabished a very thick sedimentary column which covers rocks of U p p e r J u r a s s i c ,
Cretaceous and Tertiary age, with a composite thickness of more than 5000 m. T h e Mesozoic
secuence is mainly composed of carbonates, terrigenous and evaporite section, while the T e r -
tiary se cuence is mainly a clastic, alternate sand and shale section, deposited in successive trans-
gressive and regressive stages, forming an overall regression to the East, from the Paleocene u p
to the Pleistocene.
In the Burgos geologic province, gas production has been established in all the stratigraphie
column; the U p p e r Jurassic and Cretaceous reservoirs discoveries are isolated, scarce and mostly
with low permeability, which makes themnot very significant. O n the other h a n d , the tertiary
reservoirs sands are multiple, with a great variety of forms and show a very wide distribution.
T h e extension of the tertiary reservoirs in the basin, makes it possible to subdivide the province
in 5 elongated and subparsdlel, production strips. These strips have been designated as: Jurassic
and Cretaceous strip, Paleocene strip. Eocene strip. Oligocène strip and Miocene strip.
Burgos Basin is mainly a gas productive province in a development and exploration stage,
which still has a wide perspective in new discoveries. In order to increase the potential and pro-
ven gas reserves, as well as to increase or m a n t a i n the production platform of the province, it
is essential to fulfill new geologic studies that will permit the discovery and development of new
gas fields; the perspective of deeper or shallower reservoirs in known gas fields. Also the study
of the optimun and rational exploration of the proven gas reserves in estabished gas fields.
