March 4 - 6, 2012, Charlotte, North Carolina

Help us celebrate our 10th Anniversary.

Since inception in 2002, the Executive Briefing Conference (EBC) has become the premier venue
for key manufacturing executives to network and explore visions for the future of our industry.
The EBC provides a venue for businesses of all sizes to explore business concepts, learn about
new technologies and discover opportunities in a non-commercial environment, with the goal of
discovering “What’s Now, What’s New & What’s Next”.
The 2012 Executive Briefing Conference will be held in Charlotte, North Carolina, adjacent to the
Charlotte Motor Speedway. The conference will focus on tactical ways to match the speed-to-
market while staying ahead of the speed at which the market is changing.
Visit www.stilesmachinery.com/ebc for more conference information and to secure your spot.

Checklist to Standardize
To Standardize the process and begin
establishing a new norm going forward,
I developed a checklist of tasks that
would be performed at predetermined
intervals. For instance: icons for train-
ing modules will be removed as soon
as the training is complete; the screen
and keyboard will be cleaned weekly
with special attention given for loose
keys, missing screws, broken latches or
hinges, and USB port function; and, a
monthly review of all desktop icons to be
sure they are current and relevant. My
business partner will hold me account-
able by auditing the task list quarterly.
I am very pleased with this first
attempt to organize my computer files,
but I know that completing the culture
shift and Sustaining the new process
will require revisiting the first four steps
frequently, if not daily, until they become
habit. Sustain is the 5S step that usually
receives the least amount of attention,
but is the most critical in developing a
self-sustaining process.
Let me know how your 5S project
comes out so I can share some success
stories or respond to issues that you
encounter along the way. ❮

September furniture orders increase
13 percent from August, survey finds
According to a survey of residential furniture manufactur-
ers and distributors, conducted by Smith Leonard, new
orders in September 2011 rose 12 percent over Septem-
ber 2010 orders and are up 13 percent from August 2011.
The Furniture Insights survey shows year-to-date, new
orders are up 6 percent in 2011 over the first nine months
of last year. Smith Leonard noted that many manufactur-
ers have introduced some price increases, which may
have impacted the percentage increase in orders.
Furniture shipments for September were 6 percent
higher than September 2010 and also 6 percent higher
than August. Year-to-date, shipments are 3 percent
higher than in the previous year.
The number of factory and warehouse employees in
September was even with August, but dropped 1 percent
from September 2010. Factory and warehouse payrolls
were up 8 percent from August and up 10 percent from
September 2010. The survey says the increased payroll
numbers mean employees are getting more hours this
year than last, since the number of employees remained
relatively flat compared to last year.

When the inventor of biscuit joinery

comes out with a new biscuit joiner, it’s
all about precision. Lamello, the Swiss
company that first developed biscuit

new Top 21 joiner with some significant
improvements all founded on working
more precisely and efficiently.
