Steel Structures II
Project

Objective is to design the steel structure of an industrial platform composed of:

 Secondary beams simply supported on the main girder, realized using "I" or IPE hot-rolled
sections.
 Main girder simply supported on the columns. The main girder is to be designed using the
following two alternatives:
- a truss built of angle sections connected by welding using gusset plates
- plate girder built up of welded steel plates.
 Columns (restrained at base and hinged at the top). Columns are to be designed using:
- realized using "I" or HBE hot-rolled sections

Location:
Building importance: Class 3 - gi,s=1
Exposure of the building: Complete exposure – Ce=0.8h
Thermal coefficient: No thermal transmittance – Ct=1
Angle of the roof: 0° - miL=0.8

Snow load in joints:

1. Interior joints of the truss Fsnow=(SxTxL)/10=(1.28x16x6)/10=12.29 KN
2. Exterior joints of the truss Fsnow=12.29/2=6.15 KN

2. Exterior joints of the truss Fdead=3.36/2=1.18 KN

SECONDARY BEAM

qdead = D x λ = 0.35 x 1.6 = 0.56 KN/m

w(z)=qb x Ce(z) x Cp

Ce(z)= 2.4 (open field)

qb, Bucharest = 0.5 KPa = 0.5 KN/ m2

Cp=0.8 For zone A

Cp= 0.3 For zone B

A: w(z)=qb x Ce(z) x Cp= 0.5 x 2.4 x 0.8= 0.96 KN/m2

B: w(z)=qb x Ce(z) x Cp= 0.5 x 2.4 x 0.3= 0.36 KN/m2

Force on column

A: Fwind= w(z) x T=0.96 KN/ m2 x 6 = 5.76 KN/m

B: Fwind= w(z) x T=0.36 KN/ m2 x 6 = 2.16 KN/m

CONNECTIONS

All connections are realized using 3 bolts M20 gr. 10.9
