Reduction in overall aircraft weight directly impacts the performance and efficiency, with a one
kilogram (kg) weight reduction estimated to nullify lifetime operating costs, especially associated
with fuel, for a commercial airplane. Plastics possess superior strength to weight ratio that helps
in the overall reduction of weight. Plastics utilized in the production of aircrafts mainly comprise
of reinforced carbon fiber which are 50% lighter than conventional materials like aluminum, and
also assist in low level out-gassing (release of a gas that was dissolved, trapped, or absorbed)
in vacuum. Aerospace plastics have high thermal and mechanical stability, which avoids
occurrence of any disaster in the aircraft during critical operations.
Aerospace plastics are used across commercial and freighter aircrafts, military aircrafts, rotary
aircrafts, and general aviation purpose aircrafts. They are utilized during the manufacturing of
fuselage, wings, rotor blades, empennage, and cockpit and cabin area. Carbon fiber is also
used for the manufacturing of seats and thereby reduces the overall metal quantity in the seat.
Carbon fiber seats are lighter and thinner than traditional seats and therefore enhance the
overall carrying capacity of the seat. Carbon fiber seats are around 9 kg lighter as compared to
previously used seats and can accommodate 20 people more in a 150 passenger capacity
aircraft.
The aerospace plastics value chain consists of raw material manufacturers, produces,
distributors and end-use industries.
Reinforced and thermoplastic polymers are extensively used in various application segments of
the aerospace industry. These engineering plastics are capable of minimizing labor intensive
fabrications of composites. They essentially comply with FST (flame, smoke and toxicity)
requirements of the aerospace industry. The carbonification, graphitization, and thermosetting of
polymers leads to the formation of fibers such as Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRPs),
Glass Reinforced Plastics (GRPs) and aramid reinforced plastics.
Carbonization assists volatizing non-carbon elements (nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen), thereby
enriching the fibers with carbon. Carbon fiber is a strong and lightweight engineering material
that is produced either by solution spinning or melting PAN (polyacrylonitrile) polymer.
High tensile strength and desired stiffness of the carbon fiber mainly depends upon the purity of
polyacrylonitrile precursor. Hence, polyacrylonitrile is one of the basic raw materials that are
used in manufacturing aerospace plastics.

Aviation Industry has taken measures to decrease carbon emission by 1.5 % till 2020 by
preferring plastics than metal components. In addition, aircraft manufacturers are eyeing on
development of eco-friendly composites after carbon footprint post by Copenhagen Climate
Conference in 2009.
Aircraft demand is related to air travel, which in turn is linked to the increasing wealth,
increasing per capita income and positive GDP outlook. An increase in air travel has occurred in
the developing markets such as India and China; both these countries signify robust optimism
for the aviation segment. Other factors leading to aviation industry growth include international
trade and globalization.
The global economy has also shown gradual signs of recovery from the economic recession. It
is seen that the downturn in aviation industry coincides with economic slumps. Given the
present economic situation it is clear that the airline industry will continue to recover in the near
future with increasing demand from developing economies like India and China, which will offset
the relative slowdown in demand from mature economies like North America and Europe.
The applications of composite materials have expanded expeditiously in general aviation and
military aircraft designs, which mainly comprise of demanding flight-control surfaces. Aircraft
manufacturers prefer aerospace plastics over conventional materials due to the benefits offered
by them. The growing demand across the aviation industry has instigated a rise in the demand
for aerospace plastics. During the economic slowdown, the aviation industry suffered losses
with a decline in the number of air-travelling passengers. However, stabilization in the economic
scenario has helped the market recuperate, thereby generating new market opportunities.

aviation is due to growing industrialization and globalization that has given a major thrust to the
aviation industry. This is expected to generate substantial demand for aerospace plastics and
enhance its market size. In addition, the growth of low cost carriers in developing economies is
expected to further augment the demand for aircraft thereby driving the demand for aerospace
plastics over the forecast period.

Aerospace industry in the U.S. is projected to grow with increase in commercial flying as a result
of continued increase in passenger travel demand which is estimated to increase by 5% over
the next 20 years. Accelerated replacement cycle of obsolete aircraft with net generation fuel
efficient aircraft is expected to further propel commercial aerospace sector in the country.
Presence of industry giants including Boeing and Airbus is expected to further augment market
growth.
Growing production of aircraft parts, assembly manufacturing sector and development in China
on account of the country’s aerospace policy “The 2011 State Council Policy” is expected to
spur market growth. Increasing number of regional manufacturers in China including Shanghai,
Chengdu, Xi’an, Jiangxi and Shenyang is further anticipated to drive market over the forecast
period. Merger of China Aviation Industry Corporation and China Aviation Industry Corporation II
as AVIC (China Aviation Industry Corporation) in October of 2008 is expected to commence
large commercial aircrafts projects. With ongoing foreign joint ventures of aircraft manufacturers
and domestic aircraft manufacturers, the aviation industry is expected to expand in the country.
Efforts undertaken by the government of China to encourage foreign participation in the
development of China’s aerospace industry are expected to drive the market.
Asian countries are expected to grow, thereby creating countless opportunities in the region for
MRO companies, aerospace manufacturers and general aviation & aerospace players.
Recently, the material is being used in continuous reinforced composites for aerospace
applications along with thermoplastics composites for production of critical aerospace
components on Airbus A340 and A380 aircraft, and finds usage in other aircraft interior
applications. Growing aerospace industry is expected to augment market for plastics over the
forecast period.
Aerospace plastics namely Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRPs) are currently one of the
strongest and lightest materials available in the market. CFRP is five times stronger than steel
and has one third the weight. These composite materials can be easily molded into complex
cross sections with relatively less efforts thereby majority of aircraft manufacturers preferably
utilize aerospace plastic in the production of aircrafts.
Lightweight plastics also increase flight time of remote controlled surveillance aircrafts as these
aircrafts are not burdened with human pilots, the fuel burnt is directly proportional to the weight
of the aircraft. Carbon fiber most often comprises of epoxy; however, other polymers, namely
vinyl ester, nylon or polyester are also utilized as per the demand. Hence, CFRPs are expected
to be one of the suitable construction materials for aircraft structure on account of their excellent
mechanical characteristics and low specific weight.
The specific weight of CFRP is 1.55 g/cm3, which is far less than the specific weight of
aluminum i.e. 2.8 g/cm3. Fuselage constructed from CFRP weighs 25% less than that
constructed from aluminum. The utilization of CFRP in considered components of A320
fuselage is expected to reduce its overall weight approximately by 1 ton. Further extension of
CFRP applications for total fuselage is likely to increase the reduction in the weight to 2.5 tons.
The weight reduction helps in reduction of overall manufacturing and operating cost of an
aircraft and thereby reduces the financial burden on military and concerned governments. The
performance benefits gained by minimizing the weight of the aircraft have given a major thrust
to the development of military aviation composites.
Aerospace plastic has varied applications in aircrafts that ranges from the main structure to
bottles and cutlery. Reduction in weight of an aircraft impacts its takeoff weight, thereby
minimizing the fuel consumption. The superior strength possessed by plastic coupled with
minimal weight is one of the vital factors driving the aerospace plastics market.
Replacement of metals with plastics has been a major driver for plastics demand growth. Metals
including aluminum, phosphorous bronze, carbon steel, bronze, bronze bearings, stainless
steel, brass, and cast iron are replaced by plastics. Plastics have emerged as one of the
alternative to metals that not only reduces emission levels but also increases fuel economy.
Various factors supporting the use of plastics instead of metals include lightweight, low friction,
no lubrication, increase part life dimensional stability, high mechanical resistance, noise
reduction, high impact strength, flexibility to machining, and electrical insulating properties.
Increasing demand in thermostat housing, electric water pump & valve housing electric, fuel
integrated valve, fuel injector, brake guide piston, and motor brush holder will drive demand for
plastics over the forecast period.
Overall vehicle weight reduction can be achieved by reducing weight of gears that lowers
moment of inertia and thus increases efficiency level. Plastics resulted in 46% weight reduction
in seat components in aviation sector by substituting metal.
Stringent environment regulations are forcing automotive industry to improve fuel efficiency,
reduce maintenance need and lower noise levels. Such strict goals are therefore driving need
for lower vehicle weight for achieving all these factors. Plastics offer unique and superior
performance characteristics which are expected to augment its market in aerospace sector.
Growth of the aviation industry and increased demand for lightweight materials in the aerospace
industry has boosted the demand for aerospace plastics. Currently, the percentage of
aerospace plastics utilized in manufacturing the Boeing 787 accounts for more than 50% of its
overall weight. Aerospace plastics are widely preferred due to their excellent corrosion
resistance property, thereby elongating the shelf life of aircrafts. Aerospace components that
comprise of carbon fibers are flexible and resistant to damage.
They are induced to vibration in most types of aerospace applications. Aerospace components
with complex curved structures are easily manufactured using aerospace plastics. Such
complex curved structures improve the aerodynamics and reduce drag, which enhances the fuel
efficiency. High quality CFRP material exhibits electromagnetic transparency, which enables
military aircrafts to survey areas without getting tracked by the radar. The high quality CFRP
absorbs any radiation waves emitted by the radar, thereby making them untraceable.
Vendors of the global aerospace plastics market are expected to earn benefits due to increased
usage of composites in new-generation aircrafts. The utilization of these lighter and stronger
materials has significantly grown over the past decade, leading to greater fuel efficiency and
lower costs for the airline industry. The unique characteristics of aerospace plastics offer various
benefits, and hence they are widely preferred by aircraft manufacturers. This is in turn driving
the global aerospace plastics market.
Toxicity issues
Safety issues
Carbon fiber is difficult to recycle as it possesses poor degradability. Increase in demand for
highly sustainable composite materials has led to the development of non-degradable carbon
fiber. The non-degradable carbon fiber is equally accountable in adding to the landfills.
Production of carbon fiber emits substantial greenhouse gases in the atmosphere that are
harmful to human health. Comparative to other conventional materials, CFRP releases more
greenhouse gases that negatively impact the environment.
The production of CFRP releases small respirable fiber particles that adsorb various chemicals,
which directly impacts the respiratory system of human beings. The particles are retained within
the lungs for a prolonged time, which in turn leads to chronic diseases like asthma, etc. Growing
concern about potential health risks is encountered by civilian and Airport Rescue and
Firefighting (ARFF) personnel when a post-crash fire is associated with an advanced composite
aircraft. The fine particulates released into the environment also cause skin and eye irritation.
With the consideration of all these factors, United States Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) and Greenpeace introduced a few conventions that regulate machining and cutting of
CFRP structures within a closed hood. The emission of harmful particulates and greenhouse
gases that occurs during the production of aerospace plastics is expected to inhibit market
growth.
The CFRP composite material is a combination of two materials, wherein one material is a
matrix and other is reinforcement. CFRP is not homogeneous unlike metals, and is made of two
or more materials engineered together to attain better properties. This helps the composite
materials attain better tensile strength; however, the MRO (maintenance, repair and operations)
of CFRP is expensive. This is on account of the fact that CFRP structures are machined before
they are utilized in manufacturing components of aircrafts. The machining causes CFRP
structures to splinter, as it is made up of many layers. The patching of carbon fiber components
is complicated, as the carbon fiber is prone to splinter and crack, often necessitating a complete
replacement and disposal. On the other hand, the conventional metal parts are repaired easily
and at a fairly low price.
Metals have an ability to undergo brittle and ductile fractures on account of their deformation
during subjection of load and temperature. The composites plastics materials are used to
reduce aircraft weight and improving fuel efficiency of aircraft engines. In case of Boeing 787,
the aircraft is built as a half-metal structure with inclusion of composites plastics materials. The
variation in molecular structure of metals and composites plastic materials undergoes fatigue
cracks in aircrafts.
These types of cracks are witnessed mainly along the interfacial joints made of metal and
plastics in fuselage. The cracks are so progressive that it is easily witnessed on by pilots. In
addition, the composites materials have limitations towards temperature and flammability.
Increased subjected pressure to composite materials and metal joints is expected to increase
Government agencies across different countries desire to enhance economic growth, leading to
the development of various airports and related infrastructures. There is boom in the usage of
plastic in aviation industry due to increasing aircraft demand in the commercial and freighter
segment. The productivity and economic growth is enhanced due to an improvised global air
transport network.

well as increases their payload capacity and thereby increases their fuel efficiency and the
distance they can travel without any stoppage in between. In Asia Pacific, the consumption of
aerospace plastics is expected to rise at a considerable rate due to the increase in
manufacturing of aircraft components in this region coupled with the presence of major suppliers
(Toray, Toho Tenax, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries) in this region that reduces the overall cost
of the aerospace plastic.

Aircraft frame contains the maximum amount of carbon fiber reinforced plastic and composites
which makes airframes lighter by as much as 20% as compared to conventional aluminum
designs. The extended use of composites and plastics in high tension loaded environment of
the fuselage reduces the maintenance primarily due to fatigue. Moreover, the use of plastics in
fuselage enables part count reductions through the use of fasteners and integral clips.

PES polymer exhibits properties such as high thermal stability and inherently flame retardant
characteristics which will promote its usage in airframe & fuselage applications. In addition, PES
is amorphous in nature which helps in reducing mold shrinkage.
As a result, airframe manufacturers may incorporate PES in order to reduce the cost incurred in
procurement of low profile additives. However, high cost of PES is expected to limit the
application scope of the product in the near future.
Aerostructure is the most important part of the airplane as it forms the basis for the shape and
size of the aircraft. PEEK and POM are the widely used polymers in this application owing to the
durability and corrosion and heat resistance. As the demand for general aviation and
commercial aviation is rising, the demand for these two polymers is projected to grow
significantly over the next eight years.

weight ratio, they are widely used for manufacturing the equipment required for the functioning
of an aircraft. Furthermore, the reduced weight has a significant impact on the performance of
an aircraft. The need for sturdiness in high performance aircrafts to limit the depth of the aircraft
ensures abundant presence of plastics and composites in every aircraft.

Plastics are much lighter in weight than comparable metals, allowing for more dynamic design
and lighter-weight aircraft parts, which in turn generates enormous fuel savings. The advantage
of weight to strength ratio can translate to as much as one seventh the weight for equal strength
of metal or half as much of aluminum.
They can also provide corrosion resistance for harsh environments in aircraft applications as
well as relativity high thermal and mechanically stability, on account of which the plastics market
in equipment, systems & support application.

The seats in cabin areas of an aircraft include a wide range of plastic moldings for products
such as trim strips, decorative closeouts, arm rests, and food trays, polycarbonate, and
decorative vinyl are materials that are mostly used for these purposes. In cabin areas of an
aircraft, the surfaces that are in direct contact with crew and passengers have decorative plastic
laminates. The application areas for plastic laminates include baggage racks, aisles, lavatory
interiors, ceilings, and door liners. Moreover, the compactness of an aircraft necessitates
creation of complex structures so as to route much of the conditioned air ducting around
different parts. The creation of such complex structures is quite feasible using nonmetallic
materials like plastics.

Interiors may be less demanding structurally when compared to airframe parts, but there are a
lot of specialized needs and mechanical requirements that have to be met, most notably, very
stringent fire, smoke and toxicity numbers.
Materials such as metals do not meet these requirements. However, plastics are extremely
sturdy and meet the stringent regulations. As a result, the market for plastics is expected to
grow in cabin interiors over the next eight years.

The introduction of unique plastic materials has revolutionized the space industry. 3D printing
applications have been developed for satellites, after comprehensive studies regarding their
resistance to solar flares and storms. RAMSES (Rapid Manufacture of Space Exposed
Structures) has been printed from thermoplastics in order to observe how satellites survives the
rigors of space and the particularly unwelcome atmospheric environments. Future satellite
production costs have also successfully been slashed utilizing plastics and other composite
materials. This in turn is expected to reduce the number of satellites in space while also
contributing positively to data collection and observation from these environments.

North America is the largest market with fastest growth rate owing to a highly developed
aerospace and defense sector that utilizes numerous innovative plastics in several applications.
A polymer coating that conducts electricity has been developed by Canadian scientists to help
satellites weather solar storms. Satellites are usually blanketed with insulation to protect them
against heat and light damage. This non-conducting blanket also allows electrostatic charge
from particles streaming from the Sun to build up on the satellite’s skin, leading to arcing that
can destroy the craft’s circuitry.

Airframe, aircraft fairing components, wings, nose, fuselage & tail-plane are made of numerous
plastic components. These materials generally possess good thermal & mechanical properties
as well as good resistance to aging. High performance engineering plastics are ideal for the
aerospace industry owing to their light weight as compared with other industrial materials.
A typical engineering polymer has half the density of aluminum or glass and 1/6th the density of
steel. Every extra pound a plane weights costs energy to move it and thus money. The use of
modern polymer materials and reinforcing fibers makes it possible to achieve lightweight
constructions and hence fuel savings. Plastic components can also be fabricated economically,
making it ideal for applications such as construction & insulation components.

Global aerospace plastics demand in rotary aircrafts was 2,005.3 tons in 2016 and is expected
to reach 2,953.7 tons by 2025. The market was USD 43.5 million in 2016 and is expected to
reach USD 60.5 million by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 3.8% from 2017 to 2025. Helicopters for
both civilian and military use are required to carry high payloads and are subjected to high
vibration loads. Moreover, these helicopters are particularly weight sensitive and make
extensive structural and mechanical use of the plastics for meeting these requirements.
Problems such as low strength to density ratio and poor fatigue resistance associated with the
aluminum and steel rotor blade are shadowed by the use of plastics and composite materials. In
addition to overcoming these problems, the use of plastics also helps to reduce design
drawbacks of rotor blades.
European aerospace plastics market in rotary aircrafts was 615.5 tons in 2016 and is expected
to reach 921 tons by 2025, growing at a CAGR of 4.6% from 2017 to 2025. Over the years, the
Chinese and Indian governments have signed various agreements with European countries
such as Russia and France to procure helicopters intended for civil as well as defense use.
These agreements are expected to augment the rotary aircrafts production in Europe and this in
turn, expected to augment the demand for aerospace plastics in rotary aircrafts over the
forecast period.

The supportive policies of the Middle East government have contributed significantly to market
growth in recent years, since the aerospace industry has received a boost in terms of imported
materials and impetus for regional manufacturing. As per the statistics of IATA (International Air
Transport Association), the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India and China) have experienced a
substantial growth in domestic air travel in 2011.
Passenger air traffic has risen as a result of increasing consumer disposable income and the
growing disposition of consumers to opt for luxurious and comfortable travel modes. Brazilian
companies have well established and integrated distribution network at par with other leading
aerospace companies owing to favorable government regulations and policies.
