Introduction to the SIL Apparatus Fonts

Welcome to the SIL Apparatus Fonts. These fonts were designed to provide most
of the symbols needed to reproduce the textual apparatus found in major editions
of Greek & Hebrew biblical texts. The fonts include:
The basic ASCII character set plus some international characters
ABCDEFGHabcdefgh12345!#$%&*()[]{}<>=+;:,.?°±²
Superscript characters
ÁÂÃÄÅÆÇÈáâãäåæçè‘’“”•àûýÛÝüÜßÞÀþÿš›œ•žŸ
Certain Greek, Hebrew, Gothic and other letters used for manuscripts
»¼½¾¿´¸•‚ƒ„…†‡ˆ‰Š‹Œ•Ž•³€
Special punctuation
®¯-¬µ¶·
Other Signa and Sigla used in documenting manuscript contents
¡¢£¤¥¦§¨©ª«
These fonts come in four faces:
SIL Apparatus
SIL Apparatus-Bold
SIL Apparatus-Italic
SIL Apparatus-Bold Italic
Like the SIL Greek Trans and SIL Hebrew Trans fonts, these fonts are based on SIL
Charis, a font designed for optimum clarity and compactness when printed at
small point sizes. This assures that all the fonts can be used together in documents
with a consistency of style.
Most lines of text in the apparatus can be reproduced by combining the Greek and
Hebrew fonts, the transliteration fonts, and the four faces of the SIL Apparatus
fonts. Here is a note from The Greek New Testament (United Bible Societies,
Fourth Revised Edition, Second Printing, 1994) regarding I Peter 3:15, reproduced
using the SIL Galatia and SIL Apparatus font families:
– 15 {A} tèn Cristçn ‰—’ ¸ A B C ¿ 33 945 1175 1243 1611

We have tried to be as complete as possible when choosing the symbols to include

in these fonts. Certain symbols, however, have been omitted in order to allow for
the specially scaled superscripts. These include a few symbols used in Rahlfs’ Sep-
tuagint: originian asterisk, haplographic omission, obelisks, and others. Please let
us know if you regularly need these symbols and would like us to consider adding
them in future fonts.

Distribution
The Summer Institute of Linguistics (SIL) is an organization of linguists dedicated
to the study and promotion of the thousands of languages around the world. SIL’s
International Publishing Services serves SIL by developing products to assist in the
publication of linguistic texts.
These fonts were originally developed to meet the needs and restrictions of in-
house development projects, and so, may not adequately address the more gener-
alized need for Biblical Greek computing solutions or be applicable in all situa-
tions. Nevertheless, we are happy to make this package available to the general
academic community at no charge. You may (and are encouraged to) share these
fonts and utilities with your friends and co-workers, but with the following re-
strictions:
• All files must be copied together, including this one.
• No fee may be charged for the fonts.
• They may not be used as a basis for other fonts.
Even though these fonts are freely distributable, SIL retains all copyright and own-
ership of the included fonts and utilities and reserves the right to restrict their use
and distribution at any time. They may be placed on bulletin boards, etc. but can-
not be included in (or bundled with) any commercial product including hard
disks or CD-ROMs without specific written permission.

Installing the Fonts

Windows Font Installation

The SIL Apparatus fonts can be installed in Windows just like any other TrueType
fonts. You may use any font installer utilities you have, or the Control Panel appli-
cation supplied with Windows.
If you have earlier versions of the SIL Apparatus fonts on your system, you must
remove them (using the Control Panel application) before trying to install the new
fonts.
Font installation for Windows using the Control Panel is summarized below:
1. Using Program Manager (Windows 3.1) or the Start menu (Windows 95),
launch the Control Panel application (normally found in the Main group).
2. Once the Control Panel is running, double-click on the Fonts icon to bring up
the Fonts dialog.
3. (Windows 3.1) Click on the Add... button to bring up the Add Fonts dialog.
(Windows 95) Click on File..., then Install New Font.
4. Navigate to the directory that contains the SIL Apparatus font files. In a few
seconds the names of the SIL Apparatus fonts will appear in the list of fonts.
5. Select the SIL Apparatus fonts files (SILAR.TTF, SILAB.TTF, SILAI.TTF,
SILABI.TTF). Click OK. In a few seconds, the fonts will be listed in the In-
stalled Fonts list.
6. Click on Close, then close the Control Panel application.
Note that certain applications may not see the new fonts immediately. You may
have to quit and restart the application for the fonts to become available.

Macintosh Font Installation

The SIL Apparatus fonts can be installed just like any other TrueType fonts.
If you have earlier versions of the SIL Apparatus fonts on your system, you must
remove them by quitting any open applications, opening the Fonts folder (within
the System Folder) and dragging the SIL Apparatus suitcase to the Trash from
your System/Fonts Folder) before trying to install the new fonts.
To install the SIL Apparatus fonts, open the Fonts folder (within the SIL Appara-
tus Fonts folder). Select and drag the font suitcases onto the icon of your closed
System Folder. Certain applications may not see the new fonts immediately. You
may have to quit and restart the application for the fonts to become available.

Using the SIL Apparatus Fonts

Use the following tables to determine the keystroke or access code for each sym-
bol. A wide range of superscript symbols, specially sized and positioned to com-
plement the regular letters, are provided within each font, so special superscript
formatting styles or commands are not necessary. To produce “super-superscript”
numbers and letters, however, you will need to begin with the superscript symbols
and adjust their baseline from within your application:

Access Code Chart for 32-127

This chart displays access codes 32-127, the glyphs they represent and the ASCII
equivalent of that code. The code and ASCII character are displayed below the
Apparatus character. Shaded boxes represent access codes that are not used.
Characters can be entered directly by typing the standard keystroke for the ASCII
symbol.

Access Code Chart for 128-255
This chart displays access codes 128-255 and the glyphs they represent. Windows
users can directly enter characters by holding down the Alt key and typing 0 plus
the three digit access code. Mac OS users can use standard keystrokes for entering
these characters. These keystrokes are also listed under each glyph in the chart for
your convenience. “SOe” means hold down the Shift and Option keys and type
“e”. “OuA” means hold down the Option key and type “u”, then release the Op-
tion key and type “A” (Shift-a).
