(I) INTRODUCTION:
Belgaum Airport is located 10 km towards east from Belgaum City, at Sambra village along State Highway
20. Belgaum is the commercial hub and divisional headquarters of north Karnataka, ranking second to
Bangalore in the state in terms of overall exports (mainly related to the automotive industry). There are
also many tourist spot in and around Belgaum, which has high influx of tourists.
(II) ABOUT THE DISTRICT POPULATION, ECONOMY, INDUSTRY & TOURISM POTENTIAL:
POPULATION:
The population of Belgaum District as per 2011 census is 47,79,661.
ECONOMY:
Agriculture is the main resource of the district, Agro and Food Processing Sectors are prominent for
investment. Sericulture is gaining prominence in the district with nearly 481.90 hectares under Mulberry
cultivation. Rich Deposits of Bauxite are found in Belgaum and this has led to the creation of Aluminum
industries.
Uranium deposits have been found in Deshnur, a village in Belgaum. Belgaum has been an important
center for manufacture of heavy machine tools and high pressure oil hydraulics. The geographical
advantage of Bangalore, Mumbai and Pune being nearby has led to a major support of Automobile and
Aerospace Industries.
INDUSTRY:
There are 26 Large & Medium Industries with an investment of Rs. 1932.53 crore. India’s first notified
precision engineering SEZ was launched in the district by Quest (AEQUS) Engineering.
Belgaum is one of the fastest growing cities with a very good industrial scenario in the northwestern part of
Karnataka. Belgaum has several large industries; important among them are the INDAL Aluminium
Factory and the Polyhydron Pvt. Ltd. Belgaum acts as a trade center for food grains, sugarcane, and
cotton, tobacco, oilseed, and milk products. Industries include leather, clay, pottery, soap, cotton, and
precious metals. It is very famous for its Power loom industries which provide employment for many
weavers.
TOURISM POTENTIAL:
Saundattia celebrated pilgrimage is one of the oldest towns in Belgaum district.

Kamala Narayana Temple, Degaon (Degamve / Devgram), built in the 12 century, is famous for its
rich antiquity and Kadamba style architecture.
KasamalgiParshwanatha is a remote village where, an Idol of Bhagwan Parshwanath dating to the 11th
Century was recovered while digging in a Government School premises during 2005.
Yallammagudda Temple situated in the district has numerous visitors from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh &
Maharashtra. Yellamma is worshiped as the Goddess of the fallen, in the Hindu pantheon. Legends say
that Yellamma is the incarnation of Kali, who on one hand symbolizes the death of ego, and on the other
hand is the mother who is compassionate about her children.
Belgaum Fort, located in the heart of the city, one can find the Kamala Basadi temple and ChikkaBasadi
Jain temple.
Gokak waterfall is a waterfall located on the Ghataprabha River, six kilometers away from Gokak. The
falls resembles the Niagara Falls on a smaller scale with a horse shoe shaped crest
