EMS SUPPORT
EMS support is specified in Chapter 7. ISO14001:2015, which involves the development of
requirements related to :
• Resources,
• Competences
• Awareness
• Communication
• Documentation
Existing basic documents are:
• Environmental Policy,
• Initial Environmental Review;
• Environmental Management Program
33 specific requirements divided in 5 categories of ISO 14001 are related to EMS support
7.1 RESOURCES
The organization shall determine and provide the resources needed for the EMS:
• Establishment;
• Implementation;
• Maintenance;
• Continual improvement.
Resources include: human resources, natural resources infrastructure, technology and
financial resources.
e.g. human resource: specialized skills and knowledge
infrastructure resource: organization’s buildings, equipments, underground tanks and
drainage system.
7.2 COMPETENCES
The organization shall:
a) determine the necessary competence of person(s) doing work under its control that affects the
environmental performance and its ability to fulfil its compliance obligations;
b) ensure that these persons are competent (appropriate education, training or experience);
c) determine training needs associated with its environmental aspects and its EMS;
d) take actions to acquire the necessary competence, and evaluate the effectiveness of the actions
taken.
7.3 AWARENESS

The organization shall establish, implement and maintain the process(es) needed for
internal and external communications relevant to the EMS.
The following questions related to communication must be answered:
• What?
• When?
• With whom?
• How?

• be transparent, i.e. the organization is open in the way it derives what it has reported
on;
• be appropriate, so that information meets the needs of relevant interested parties,
enabling them to participate;
• be truthful and not misleading to those who rely on the information reported;
• be factual, accurate and able to be trusted;
• not exclude relevant information;
• be understandable to interested parties.
INTERNAL COMMUNICATION
EXTERNAL COMMUNICATION
The organization shall communicate information relevant to the EMS, as established by the
organization’s communication process(es) and as required by its compliance obligations.
h) the organization's compliance with legal and other requirements to which the
organization subscribes, and corrective actions taken in response to identified
instances of noncompliance,
i) supplementary information in reports, such as glossaries,
j) financial information such as cost savings or investments in environmental projects,
k) potential strategies to improve an organization's environmental performance,
l) information related to environmental incidents
m) sources for further information, such as contact person(s) or websites.
When creating and updating documented information, the organization shall ensure
appropriate:
• identification and description (e.g. a title, date, author, or reference number);
• format (e.g. language, software version, graphics) and media (e.g. paper, electronic);
• review and approval for suitability and adequacy.
For the control of documented information, the organization shall address the following
activities:
• distribution, access, retrieval and use;
• storage and preservation, including preservation of legibility;
• control of changes (e.g. version control);
• retention and disposition.
• In setting of objectives and targets, very important are the following aspects :
• correlation with the environmental policy ;
• specify objectives from IER (considering the environmental aspects and associated impacts);
• applicability of the objectives and targets at the level of the entire organization or limited to the
level of a site or activity;
• defining the appropriate levels of management;
• analysis and periodic review of the objectives and targets, taking into account the views of
interested parties.
