COURSE INFORMATION FOR EE571

Class Title: Advanced Wireless Integrated Circuits and Systems
Instructor:
Dr. Deuk Heo, EME 225, office) 335-1302, dheo@wsu.edu, http://armag.eecs.wsu.edu
Official Office Hours: Open Door Policy

Class Objectives: Based on the basic concepts of high frequency circuit design from undergraduate
classes, the students in this graduate level class will be expected to understand the state of the art design
methodologies of advanced wireless ICs and systems. Design projects help the student learn the advanced
circuit design and analysis skills of wireless integrated circuits and system implementation using CAD
tool.

Schedule of Course Content: Tu,Th 2:50-4:05, DAGG 226

Form of Instruction: Lecture
Text Book: Combination of the following two books

Prerequisite: The recommended prerequisites for this course are EE341 and EE351 or EE431. In
addition, students need to know how to use CADENCE and ADS CAD tools. If you do not satisfy these
prerequisites, you need to get permission from instructor.

Course Grading Policy: Your grade will be determined by two midterm exams (30%) and final exam
(30%), homework (20%), and a design project (20%).
Required Assignment: Examination, One Design Project, and Homework (Including Simulation
Homework)
Examinations: There will be two midterm examinations and a final examination at the scheduled time.
Design Project: One individual design project will be assigned. The objective of this project is to
understand advanced design methodologies for wireless IC components and system level specifications
for wireless communications. The project will involve designing a RF Front-end circuit block using CAD
tools (Cadence or ADS) and a state-of-the-art advanced CMOS technology. There will be 15 minutes
presentation for design project in the middle of the semester. In addition, the final report will be IEEE
TMTT Journal format.

Homework: Homework will be assigned and graded on a weekly or bi-weekly basis.

Exam Make-up Policy: Medical emergencies, job interviews or deaths in the student’s immediate
family will be the only valid reasons for missing exam. Students who miss the midterm or final exam
with valid excuse will take a make-up exam.
Computer Usage: Most design projects using the computer will work on Cadence or ADS. EME205
will be available to use ADS (advanced design software from Agilent) and Cadence. The EECS ITS help
desk can assist in setting up VNC or NoMachine NX for working in other locations on campus.
Disability Statement: Reasonable accommodations are available for students who have a documented
disability. Please notify the instructor during the first week of class of any accommodations need for the
course. Late notification may cause the requested accommodations to be unavailable. All
accommodations must be approved through the Disability Resource Center (DRC) in Administration
Annex 206 (Tel. 335-1566)
Academic Honesty: It is the responsibility of the instructor to encourage an environment where
students can learn and your accomplishments will be rewarded fairly. Any behavior, which compromises
the basic rules of academic honesty, will not be tolerated. Any cheating will result in a failing grade for
the course and be reported to the department for appropriate action.

Ground Rules:
 Late homework and design project will not be accepted. Solutions will be distributed after
grading the homework.
 No food, no drink during the class.
 Sun glasses cannot be worn during exams.
 Cell phones must be turned off during class.

Miscellaneous:
 Info about exams and review sessions, exam and homework solutions, class slides, and so forth is
available on the Blackboard.
 Bonus points will be added to your total class score for attendance as follows: 0-1 absence = 5
points, 2 absences = 3 points, 3 absences = 1 point, 4 or more absences = 0.
