A timeless story...
The Brief
A modern celebration

AIM: To celebrate the iconic figure of Sylvia

Pankhurst and her achievements.

a modern aesthetic.
THE SPACE: The interesting dimensions of the
feature wall will help shape the design. The
bottom half of the design will be minimal to
avoid the area blocked by the tree

THE STYLE: Taking reference from expressive

street art styles we will incorporate the bright
and bold aesthetics making sure the aesthetic
appears characterful yet timeless.

The Portrait
Sylvia Pankhurst
With a portrait of Sylvia at the top of the
artwork, here we have utilised the way the
building ‘looks out’ over the city. The mural
portrays her gazing optimistically into the
distance with a soft but strong expression that
shows, not only her strength and conviction, but
also hints to the hardships she had to endure.

The emphasis on the eyes in particular, helps

the viewer connect with the portrait and sparks
a compassion and empathy which encourages
passers by to enquire about her story, if not
already known.

The stylisation of the face has been rendered

so that the portrait appears timeless, insisting
that this is not just a woman of the past but a
character that influences our lives today.

The details in this artwork include an excerpt of

newspaper featuring Sylvia and her struggles
which is shown as a part of her.

To add a three dimensionality to the piece

and to give the mural textural depth we would
suggest a metal framework that stands off the
wall to outline the characters, giving the artwork
even more impact especially when lit at night.
TRAFFORD MURAL GABRIELLE WATSON 5

The Symbolism
Rise Up
Continuing the mural, we see a metaphor that
has been taken directly from Sylvia’s own work
seen below. The badge, designed by Sylvia
for the suffragette campaign, depicts a woman
breaking free from her prison with a flock of
birds rising up with her - strengthening the
themes of release, freedom and unity.

The use of lilac in the mural is a direct reference

to the colours used heavily by the Suffragette
movement as a way of branding their cause and
promoting the campaign.

Ever so faintly behind this we see the Portcullis

symbol of the House of Commons - also taken
from Pankhurst’s designs. This imagery, (used
to reference the establishment the Suffragettes
were fighting) acts as a metaphor for the ideas
of imprisonment and in turn release.

‘In Stitches’ 2015
The Office Group, Aire St
LEEDS

Brief: To create an artwork which celebrates the placement of the

building and its relationship to Leeds.

Solution: Centred on its textiles trade, Leeds is a city of industry,

in the hand- crafted sense of the word. Transport also played
a huge role in the city’s growth, with trains from Leeds Station
transporting wool and fabrics to nearby cities. As The Office
Group strengthens its relationship with National Rail, continuing
to provide office space alongside key UK stations, this piece
nods to the interwoven relationship of fabric and transport. This
one-of-a-kind knitted piece puts a playful twist on the official
train ticket, customising each detail to tie in with life at The Office
Group, bringing in everything from the trademark anglepoise
lamp to the language of travel, with a few tongue-in-cheek jokes
stitched in too.

‘In the walls’ and ‘Where’s your head at?’
2016
Yalding House, London

Brief: Once home to the BBC’s central music library and

Radio 1 broadcasting studios, Yalding House is steeped
in musical heritage. Radio 1 interviews will go down in
history, as conversations with some of our best-loved
artists and musicians, by some of the UK’s best DJs.
After more than a decade of live broadcasts from the
basement, it’s as if the sound continues to emanate from
the walls; a musical accompaniment for visitors as they
pass through the corridor.

Solution: Composed of genuine vintage vinyl records,

arranged at varying angles to form a sound wave, ‘In
the Walls’ celebrates Yalding House’s innate connection
to music. The sound wave translates as Radio 1
Breakfast show DJ Nick Grimshaw’s farewell message,
‘Bye, Yalding House’, posted on Twitter just before
the radio team left the building for the last time in
December 2012. The pieces serves as a symbol of the
sound continuing to emanate from the walls; a musical
accompaniment for visitors as they pass through the
corridor.

Also the phrase ‘Where’s Your Head At’ , made famous

in 2001 by British electronic band Basement Jaxx is
crafted from the wire of a set of DJ headphones creating
a sculptural typography piece which celebrates the
musical heritage of the site.

Solution: This piece makes use of the large wall by

cascading diagonally across it with the arrows beaming
down on the clientele for a great backdrop to their

The mural uses a bright yet soft colour pallet to stand

point. The linear nature of the mural mimics some of the
lines within the branding.

Thomas Cook
crete Hotel

2018
Brief: To design a mural installation with a production
budget of £5000 for a large wall as part of the new
Cook’s Club range.

Solution: Millennials are the first generation to really

have the tools to market themselves and create a
‘brand’ of their own identity. In this concept we take
advantage of the instagram culture by creating a
mural that can be interacted with. Holiday photos
have become less ‘boring slideshow’ and more
‘check me out’. Here the phrase ‘Don’t you wish
you were here’ with its street art style calligraphy
and stylish white on white colour pallet perfectly
encapsulates that slightly smug holiday feeling. With
the 3d Cooks Club location marker showing everyone
where it’s at.
