although the process is tough, we
gain more happiness from it,” Mr

One cookery student, Carrie
achieved the received five awards in
different- Bronze in Fruit and Vege
Carving, Silver in the live dessert,
Silver in live salmon, Silver in live
knife skill, and 2018 Training Chef
of the Year.
In 2017, Ms Carrie completed a
Fruit and Vegetable Carving Course
in South Korea to help make her
dream come true in New Zealand.
Carrie credits the start of her success
to PBRS and her participation has
boosted her career prospects and put
her name out in the industry.

Improvements to information
sharing between Immigration
NZ and NZ Police

A
new automated system that improves the sharing of information between Immigration New
Zealand and New Zealand Police went live yesterday.
The system allows Police 24/7 access, making it easier for Police to identify a person
they are taking enforcement action against.
This is particularly valuable for Police when they have arrested a person or suspect that a person
has breached a court order, and Police believe that the person is not a New Zealand citizen.
The improvements also enable Police to share information with INZ so that INZ can take any
necessary compliance action for a non-New Zealander that may be breaching their visa conditions.
“This electronic access is another step toward an improved system of managing the identities of
those entering the criminal justice system,” says Manager-National Forensic Services, Inspector
John Walker.
“The improvements allow better linking between government agencies to ensure a cross-sector
view of people that Police and INZ are both dealing with.”
The improvements build on recent automated access by Police to driver licence images held by
the NZ Transport Agency, as well as the current manual process where Police requests information
from INZ via a Contact Centre.
The information sharing through the automated system is enabled by the Privacy
Act 1993.

(SYNZ), a community
organisation, run by
young Sikh individuals is
bringing Youth Kirtan Diwan, a
celebration of local and regional
talents singing praises of the
Akaal Purakh in Saadh Sangat.
Youth Kirtan Diwan is being
held for the second time since
its first show in 2017, which
was a massive success in terms
of participation, content and
presentation. Sikh Youth NZ
aims to make this event conducted four times
a year, at a different gurudwara each time to
make it more popular for young musicians and
singers.
“Youth Kirtan Diwan is a prestigious
celebration of local and regional talent where
non-professional Jathas (bands) commemorate
the greatest gift granted by our gurus – to be
able to sing the praises of the Akaal Purakh
in Saadh Sangat,” Navjot Singh Gulati from
SYNZ told The Indian Weekender.
The organisers have incorporated a variety of
other instruments and styles of music to bring
the Sangat, a fusion between Kirtan and modern
music while ensuring all rules regarding Kirtan
are abided by.
“Our very talented musicians will be playing
instruments like the mandolin and veena along
with the classic harmonium and tabla to name
a few, with a mixture of qawalli and classical
style,” Mr Gulati added.

Hindi Language Week: Kiwi-Indians yearn

he Kiwi-Indian community is all set
to participate, support and promote
the Hindi language when the Hindi
Language and Culture Trust of New Zealand
will celebrate the Hindi Language Week from
September 7-14.
The Minister of Ethnic Communities, Jenny
Salesa, will be the keynote speaker of the
opening event on Friday, September 7, at the
Papatoetoe High School.
The trust, which has been at the forefront
of coordinating amongst several nationwide
language is fundamental for every human
society, and this becomes more important
among ethnic immigrants, who primarily reside
in distant lands uprooted from their culture.
Experts concur that mother language is a
carrier of values and knowledge, very often
used in the practice and transmission of
intangible cultural heritage.
Submission for inclusion of Hindi
Language in NZ curriculum gains

programme and a Hindi speech competition
for students in three categories of Primary,
Intermediate and High Schools.
The representatives of the Auckland
based trust, other nation-wide advocates and
passionate teachers who are committed to
impart Hindi language skills among youths and
Hindi enthusiasts believe that such collective
language week celebrations are important for
raising awareness about protecting a language
which is so inherently connected with broader
Indian culture and identity.

eanwhile, the submission calling for
the inclusion of Hindi Language in NZ
curriculum, earlier made to the government
has made some progress with the office of the
Education Minister acknowledging the receipt
of the submission and inviting them for further
discussion – an opportunity cherished by the
trust representatives.
Minister for Education, Chris Hipkins
said, “I appreciate the valuable work you are
doing in your community to encourage Hindi
language learning and I have asked Ministry of
Education officials to meet with you to discuss
the matters you have raised.”
Speaking to the Indian Weekender Mr Dutt
said, “We plan to meet with the officials from
the Ministry of Education once we are done
with our Hindi Language Week celebrations.”
“It is an important opportunity and we wish
to make a best case out of it,” Mr Dutt said.
Earlier The Indian Weekender had also
written in support of the submission to the
Minister of Education emphasising that
inclusion of Hindi Language in NZ curriculum
would further accentuate the emotional bond
between the Kiwi-Indian communities and
Aotearoa New Zealand.

Speeches are organised in three categories; Primary, Intermediate and High Schools.

he New Zealand Islamic Information
Centre (NZIIC), an affiliation of
Masjid-at-Taqwa based in Manukau,
is working toward creating a strong awareness
on suicide prevention among the teens and the
youth.
Saving Lives Campaign or Suicide
Prevention Awareness Campaign was started
by NZIIC headed by Dr Muhammad Anwar
Sahib, a prominent Islamic scholar who has
been reaching out to the local community to
help educate and address the subject of suicide
and depression.
“It is no secret that New Zealand has one
of the highest suicide rates in the world in the
teenage category, which is twice as many as
in the US and four times more than Britain. In
2015 Ministry of Health reported 527 people
committed suicide in New Zealand and that
is around 10 in a week. Recent reports also
indicate that these numbers are not at all
decreasing,” the spokesperson from NZIIC
told The Indian Weekender.
Dr Anwar has been running his own
workshops in the local communities in
spreading the word and educating the people to
get professional help. His method also includes
calling people closer to the one Almighty God
and seeking His guidance.
While there have been acknowledgements
from both the Ministry of Health and Counties
Manukau Police, broader communities have
widely appreciated this initiative. Along with
printed materials supplied by the Ministry of
Health, NZIIC also circulates its own brochure
to help educate on the issue to help raise
awareness to overcome it.
The Indian Weekender spoke to a
representative of NZIIC involved in the
Suicide Prevention Awareness Campaign to
know more about their activities and reached in
the community.
IWK: How often do you host such
events?
NZIIC: Almost two years ago we ran a
campaign on “Say No To Intoxicants” which
was received positively by the broader
community and we used the same method as
Saving Lives Campaign. Ministry of Health
has also supported us with free materials to
distribute, and within with we circulate our
own pamphlets too to help educate people to
for this workshop. Our last workshop was on
Saturday, August 11 at Aotea Centre and we
have the next workshop on Monday, September
10 at Masjid-at-Taqwa on 58 Grayson
Avenue, Manukau that marks World Suicide
Prevention Day.
IWK: What is the underlying message
when approaching such a sensitive
subject with the community?
NZIIC: Our methods are based on leading
people to seek professional help and also
calling people closer to the One Creator, The
Almighty God. We believe firmly in medical
help along with therapy and counselling, but
we also believe that ultimately all help comes
from the Almighty God. One of the reasons
such problems are rising to its peak these
days in our community is because people
have lost connection with their Creator. Our
message is clear, and we want to save people
from self-destruction, from all sorts of harmful
substances and psychological issues. Life is
too precious to be destroyed.
IWK: What other means do you use to
reach out to the community?
NZIIC: Our general method is going out on the
streets and talking to people. Our volunteers go
to the streets to help distribute information on
the issue that we are addressing. We also use
social media and put discussions, live posts and

community been?
NZIIC: We have close to 20 volunteers
including children and adults. Dr Anwar does
most of the presentation in the workshops and
volunteers help distribute pamphlets and raise
awareness. We have hardly met anyone in the
broader New Zealand community who has
expressed negatively on what we have been
doing. Even if people don’t take our pamphlets,
they always give us a positive gesture.
IWK: What are the other activities of
the masjid for the women, youth, chil-
dren and the elderly of the community?
NZIIC: Fortunately, Masjid At-Taqwa and
NZIIC have been very active in its community.
Currently, we run different programs to touch
base with every age group in the community.
We host women’s quiz, sisterhood programs,
sisters educational program, sisters netball
every week, gym everyday young men, soccer
practice every Sunday, volleyball every Friday
in summer. Regarding educational activities
we host lectures every Thursday, interfaith
dialogue every week, community-oriented
project, Urdu lectures once a month, special
academic courses, Arabic language courses,
and kids educational program every day.

A symposium held in Wellington

n recent years, India has emerged as the
fastest-growing major economy in the
world, and is expected to grow faster than
China over the next decade. In 2017, India
was the sixth-largest global economy, and is
expected to be the third-largest by 2030 behind
China and the United States. Simultaneously,
India’s presence in New Zealand has been
growing through people-to-people links. India
is now the largest source of skilled migrants
for New Zealand, and Hindi is the fourth-most
widely spoken in the country. India’s growing
strategic relationship with the United States,
Japan, and Australia, and ongoing tensions with
China are making India salient to the emerging
security architecture in Asia. Not surprisingly,
India is now a priority relationship for New
Zealand.
To promote an awareness of India and the
opportunities that it presents to New Zealand,
the New Zealand India Research Institute
(NZIRI), a consortium of scholars actively
engaged in research on India and India-New
Zealand relations in seven New Zealand
universities (with the main administrative
center at Victoria University of Wellington),
organized a one-day international symposium
on “Looking at India from the South Pacific” on
Monday, August 27, at Victoria University of
Wellington. The symposium – which was open
to the public – was in the format of a dialogue
with experts in the fields of economics,
trade, diplomacy, security, governance, and
social development. The experts included
India, Singapore, and Australia in addition to
discussants from NZIRI.
The overall prognosis for the Indian
economy was cautiously optimistic as India’s
macroeconomic fundamentals remain strong.
India is in the process of trying to expand its
manufacturing base and to integrate with the
global supply chains. However, the growing
trade barriers such as the ongoing US-China
spat are a major challenge because India needs
an open global economy for its development.
“Premature de-industrialization” also remains
a significant concern for New Delhi. Given
India’s stage of development, it is unusual for
services to contribute more to the gross national
product than industry.
In terms of foreign policy and diplomacy,
the symposium highlighted India’s concerns
about China. The two sides have significant
differences related to their unresolved border
dispute, Tibet (and the Dalai Lama), and the
China-Pakistan nexus. However, given that
its strategic links with the United States and

remains cautious as New Delhi wants to avoid
an overtly confrontational relationship with

its growing material power, India has emerged
as a foreign aid donor (“development assistance
partner”) in recent years. While the bulk of

democratic institutions have come under strain
in recent years due to a number of factors,
including corruption, sectarianism, and neglect.

its food productivity and storage.
Second, the symposium also noted that there
were some differences between India and New
Zealand’s approach to the wider Asian region.
While India increasingly looks at the region
through an Indo-Pacific lens (that combines the
Indian and Pacific Oceans), New Zealand takes
the Asia-Pacific approach (as New Zealand is
not an Indian Ocean nation). Nevertheless,
New Zealand understands India’s approach as
New Zealand’s traditional partners, Australia
and the United States, are also thinking in Indo-
Pacific terms.
The symposium was supported by the
New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and
Trade, the Asia New Zealand Foundation, and
the India-New Zealand Business Council (in
addition to Victoria University of Wellington).
NZIRI aims to build on this and related
scholarly activities to make New Zealand more

Indian political system outlived everyone else among his contemporaries.
Mr Vajpayee was a member of parliament for almost half a century.
Right from the start, he left an indelible impression on Indian politics through his fine oratory
skills. In fact, his maiden speech in parliament impressed the formidable Jawaharlal Nehru so
much that while introducing Mr Vajpayee to a visiting foreign dignitary he reportedly said:
“This young man one day will become the country’s prime minister.” When Nehru’s prophetic
words did come true, he went on to become the first non-Congress Prime Minister to complete
an entire term.
Mr Vajpayee was India’s second economic reformer after P.V. Narasimha Rao, who had
opened up the Indian economy in 1991 after decades of protectionism and state-control. When
the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) came to power in 1998, there was widespread scepticism among
investors about the new government reversing the economic policies of the Narasimha Rao
government and becoming more protectionist in nature. These fears were not unfounded.
Mr Vajpayee hardly made it clear at several points during his tenure that he favoured the
path of reforms to higher growth. Mr Vajpayee continued undeterred on the path of reforms,
consistently trying to balance the demands of the party’s parent organisation with the needs of
the economy. Most importantly, Mr Vajpayee’s contrarian stance created a sense of continuity in
government policies and kept investor confidence in India alive.
Throughout its term, the government opened up various sectors like insurance, banking,
telecom, pharmaceuticals, civil aviation and real estate to foreign investors. Simultaneously,
all quantitative restrictions on imports were eliminated by 2002. But these were replaced with
a system of tariffs to provide protection to domestic industries and, more importantly, keep the
domestic criticism at bay.
Over the years, the Vajpayee government also initiated major reforms like the the value-
added tax regime, dismantling of administered price structure for fertilisers and petroleum
products, the extension of capital market reforms that Narasimha Rao had missed, reduction in
government equity in public sector banks and reduction in the size of the bureaucracy.
Mr Vajpayee also played a vital role in fuelling the explosive growth in the telecom sector
in the new millennium. As soon as he assumed office, he set up a National Task Force on
Information Technology and Software Development that included the likes of N.R. Narayan
Murthy of Infosys and Azim Premji of Wipro.
The task force called for a complete overhaul of India’s telecom policy. It resulted in the New
Telecom Policy (NTP) of 1999, which improved upon the policy introduced by Narasimha Rao
in 1994. Telecom licensing norms were altered to make it more lucrative for private players
to enter the market while a distinction was drawn between the government’s role in policy
formulation and service provision, which effectively freed the sector from political interference.
Such reform initiatives in the telecom sector drove the success story of the industry in the
next decade.
The astounding growth of the Indian telecom industry and, especially mobile telephony, is a
shining testament to how political clarity and focused reform can deliver favourable outcomes.
Mr Vajpayee, thus, emerged as an unlikely leader who kept the flame of reform alive against
all odds. He never reversed the reform process that Narasimha Rao had initiated as many feared
when he first came to office. If anything, he only sped it up.

During the trip to Fiji the vessel,
which was berthed at the Port of
Suva, offered everything from free
medical check-ups to a class of Yoga.
It was in Fiji from August from 13-
16.
More than 1500 people, between
the ages of two years and 80 years,
took advantage of the medical
checks.

“The last time I was here was six
years ago and it is so good to be

She was born in South Australia,
her mother from Fiji (Indian
descendent) and father an Italian.
Since she was young her mother
always made sure she (McMillan)
came to Fiji to connect with her
family here.

– dancing and more about building
the confidence and having fun with
it.Her family were in Fiji for two
weeks. Mrs McMillan did a lot
of her workshop in Ba where she
stayed most of the time.
“I went to one of my mom’s old
school and so I had to look into three
schools (Veisaru, Vunisamaloa, and
Ba Sangam).
“I just loved it because everyone
was embracing the moves especially
the girls because I think females
don’t have many opportunities to
dancing even at schools.
“For boys it would have been
soccer after school or something to
run around for but the girls really got
into learning dance moves.
“Some told me that they have been
watching my channels on YouTube
and they have been learning even
before I came.

countries for supporting Fiji’s bid to
host the Forum next year.
She says in the first week of May
2019, Fiji will host the Annual Board
of Directors Meeting of the Asian
Development Bank, which based on
the figures that attended the meeting
in Manila,
earlier this year, it is expected that
between 3500 to 4000 people will
be coming to Fiji for that 1 week
meeting.
Dr Luveni says in 2017 the Fiji
Parliament hosted the Asia Pacific
Parliamentary Forum for about 270
participants.
The Fijian Parliament will be the
focal point of the conference and the

the Fiji Conference will be a great

INDIAN NAVY TO UNDERTAKE

RESTORATION WORK IN TWO
FLOOD-HIT KERALA VILLAGES

T
he Navy would undertake
reconstruction work in two flood-hit
areas in Ernakulam district, Navy
chief admiral Sunil Lanba said in Kochi on
Wednesday.
Admiral Lanba was addressing a gathering
at flood ravaged Muttinakam village near here
after reviewing relief and rehabilitation work,
a Defence release said.
He also highlighted the pivotal role of the
Southern Naval Command (SNC) here in
shaping the career of naval personnel.
All including himself were connected with
Kerala by an umbilical cord as they were all
trained under the SNC prior to becoming full-
fledged naval personnel, he said.
The Navy chief said he was closely
monitoring the situation over the past several
days and that the Navy had deployed its
personnel and assets during the devastating
floods. The focus was now on relief activities,
he said.
Lanba further said the Indian Navy has
selected two villages based on inputs received
from the local administration and visits by
naval officials wherein rehabilitation initiatives
were proposed to be undertaken to restore the
area, the release said.
The shortlisted villages are Muttinakam
in Varapuzha Panchayat and Cheriya
Kadamakudi in Kadamakudi Panchayat in
Ernakulam district, it said.
The activities in Muttinakam include
reconstruction of a completely damaged house
on the river bank and complete renovation
of the Sub primary health centre (PHC) and
Anganwadi along with furniture, equipment,
play equipment and other essential equipment.
The activities in Cheriya Kadamakudi
include reconstruction of three houses, renewal
of roof of five other houses, construction of
an Anganwadi and fitment of a 10 tonnes per
day Reverse Osmosis (RO) plant to meet the
drinking water requirements of the people in
the region.
The RO plant has already been completed
and operational for the public since yesterday,
the release said.
Rehabilitation kits (800 for Muttinakam
and 500 for Cheriya kadmakkudi) containing
essential commodities such as clothing,
cleaning gear and utensils etc., were distributed
on the occasion.
Additionally, some other requirements
including the construction of a bridge
connecting Pizhala island to Cheriya
Kadamakudi hamlet would also be considered
and the feasibility explored, the release said.
The Navy chief has directed SNC to
coordinate the rehabilitation activities on
behalf of the Navy.
He would be meeting the chief minister
Pinarayi Vijayan on Thursday to discuss any
further support required from the Navy to
overcome the situation.
Admiral Lanba would also be handing over
a cheque of Rs 8.9 crore to CM Disaster Relief
Fund as a voluntary contribution from the
salaries of naval personnel. Admiral Lanba
also interacted with MLAs V D Satheesan and
S Sharma, the release said.
Relief materials worth about Rs 25 Lakh
were handed over to the Local Self government
officials by Reena Lanba, president of Navy
Wives Welfare Association (NWWA).
The Navy had rescued nearly 17,000 people
during its nearly fortnight-long ‘Operation
Madad,’ for assisting the state administration
and undertaking disaster relief operations.

team made its first Asian
Games final in 20 years,
outlasting three-time champions
China 1-0 in a fiercely-contested
battle here today.
Gurjit Kaur’s strike from a penalty

high-profile semifinal. Nonetheless,

India earned as many as three corners

finally got it right as her shot flew
past the goalkeeper and found the top

clock, China tried hard to equalize
and a shoddy Indian defence was

while Arpinder Singh ended India's 48-
year wait for men's triple jump gold as Indian
athletes enjoyed another successful day at the
18th Asian Games on Wednesday.
Experienced sprinter Dutee Chand grabbed
her second silver medal at this year's Asiad
after finishing second in the women's 200
metres event.
Swapna's triumph in the women's heptathlon
is the first ever gold for India in the event at
the Asiad.
Swapna posted a score of 6026 points. Wang
Qingling of China scored 5954 to take silver
while Japan's Yuki Yamasaki produced her
personal best of 5873 to bag the bronze medal.
Purnima Hembram, the other Indian in the
fray, finished fourth with 5837 points.
In men's triple jump, Arpinder won gold
with an effort of 16.77 metres. He pipped
Uzbekistan's Ruslan Kurbanov, who took the
silver medal with a personal best jump of 16.62
metres. The bronze medal went to China's Cao
Shuo, who jumped 16.56 metres.
Before the 25-year-old Arpinder, the previous
Indian champion at the Asiad was Mohinder
Singh Gill in 1970 with an effort of 16.11m.
A.V. Rakesh Babu, the other Indian in the
fray, was sixth with a best attempt of 16.40
metres. Arpinder flopped in his first attempt.
After the invalid jump, he came back strong
with a jump of 16.58 metres in the second
attempt which made him the leader after the
first two attempts.
Babu, in his second attempt of 16.40, was
second behind his compatriot, even as Ruslan
till then had his best of 16.28.
Arpinder gained further ascendancy when
he came out with a jump of 16.77m. Ruslan
too made his best attempt of 16.62 metres.
The Uzbek athlete however could not topple
Arpinder as the former made attempts of
15.99, 16.43, 16.41 in his final three chances
respectively.
Arpinder jumped 16.08 in his fourth attempt
before fouling the last two attempts.
China's Cao delivered his best in his sixth
and last attempt with a jump of 16.56 to push
Japanese Kohei Yamashita to the fourth spot.
Yamashita had fouled his last three attempts.
His best of 16.46 came in his third attempt.
In the women's 200m, Dutee clocked 23.20
seconds to finish behind Bahrain's Edidiong
Odiong, who claimed the gold medal with
22.96 seconds. Wei Yongli of China got the
bronze medal with a time of 23.27 seconds at
the Gelora Bung Karno Sports Stadium.
Dutee, who also took silver in the 100m,

n a recent interview with a leading daily, Deepika
Padukone talked about women-centric films,
biopics and why Piku remains her favourite film.
Deepika Padukone’s stardom is unmatched.
The actor has a huge fan following and her fans are
awaiting an announcement from her end with regards
to her next film.
Deepika had signed Vishal Bharadwaj’s film with
Irrfan Khan and had started training for it after the
release of Padmaavat.

child. I liked him the moment I saw
him. I really wanted to hug him the
moment I see him. He is such a sweet

everything is very controlled and
instructed. In this show, it is more of
interaction, connecting with people
and my reactions are based on only
their action.”
The show started in the year 2000
and this year, with its tenth season,
it is completing a remarkable journey
of 18 years on Indian television.
