Dec 2008 Ver.2 Bremen

Before start the Laser analysis

How often need to Cross Calibration?

• Everyday more than 50 samples, it would be nice run the Cross Calibration every
week
• During tuning with laser, if you see low sensitivity compare with last analysis on same
setting, it would need to run the Cross Calibration

 How to run Cross calibration

• With Tune-F (P/N SP1600698) solution on Hot Plasma mode

How often need to Mass Calibration?

• If you break the vacuum of XSERIES 2, it is necessary run the Mass Calibration
 How to run Mass Calibration-
• Standard way with Tune-A (P/N SP1600633) or Tune-F (P/N SP1600698) solution on
Hot Plasma mode every 3 month
or
• Laser with NIST 612 glass on Hot Plasma See the next slide

9
Laser Set Up

1. Laser System -Turn on (30min before)

2. Laser Soft Ware – open

3. Starting calibration of Sample stage automatically

10
Spot size -1

Spot size is not necessary to check

every time. this section is just
information how to check or change
the spot size

11
Spot size -2

 Choose the Imaged Aperture

12
Screen calibration-1

Set the Calibration Glass on the Laser sample cell

• Focus the calibration glass

 Select the Calibration screen

Screen calibration is not necessary to

run every time. this section is just
information how to check the screen
calibration
13
Screen Calibration-2

Drug the mouth to scale the between line

14
Screen Calibration-3

This distance should be 100um, if it is not the right distance, you

need to fill in the right number

 Zoom position contains 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%, each zoom
position need to check the screen calibration on same way
After check the all of the zoom, please back on 0%

15
Communication test

If laser software
will appear, the
connection test is
success

16
Plasma Turn On -1

1. Check the gas Line of Laser – “On-Line” mode on Laser Software

17
Plasma Turn On -2

2. Add-gas flush out Manuality on PlasmaLab, then turn on the Plasma,

Add-gas keep flush out (only during the gas purge)

18
Plasma Turn On -3

1. Add-gas return to “0” (Tuning torch box) Manually- if you keep flush Add gas,
Plasma can not be turn on-

2. Wait until “Operate”

19
Plasma Turn On -4

3. After “Operate” appeared, Add gas should be increasing slowly

He gas should be increased slowly due to maintain

the plasma up to 200mL/min.

20
Tuning-1

1. Go to the PlasmaLab Software – Check the ACL or Available Accessories-

21
Laser ACL Script

You can create the ACL script

How to install this ACL script is on next slid

22
How to install ACL script -1

23
How to install ACL script -2

24
Tuning-2

1. Laser door should be closed

1. Laser Warm up (Recommend time is for 15min)

2. Fire click

It would be nice to increase output of laser by low(20%),

middle(50%), high(75%) steps due to warm up the laser

25
How to install ACL script -3

Click the “ save as “ and

fill in the title

After save, it possible to

choose the ACL script
completely

26
Tuning-3

2. Set the Sample on the sample stage

(Laser Gas line is “Bypass” put on
sample lock the stage)
NIST Glass 612(http://www.nist.gov/ )is
best for Tuning standard material

• Set the sample • Lock the sample stage

27
Tuning-4

3. After “Purge” click, it is changed to “On-Line” automatically

28
Tuning-5-a

1. Turn on the light of Laser

2-a. Find out the sample on the monitor – Manually -

To optimize
Focus
To optimize the
sample position

29
Tuning-5-b

2-b. Find out the sample on the monitor – Autofocus -

30
Tuning-6
1. Create the tuning line – Choose the “Raster”- Drug the mouse on the Screen

31
Tuning-7
2. “Properties” click
Tuning laser parameter

Total Time is tuning

time; to get enough
time, you should
create the Raster
Area

32
Tuning-8

1. “Run Scan” click, 2. Highlight the “Enable Laser During Scans”

33
Tuning-9

1. Select the Element –139La, 232Th, 238U, 248ThO, 220BKG - Check the sensitivity
139La > 4000cps/ppm
238U>
10000cps/ppm

2. Oxide Ratio should be below of “1%”

34
Tuning-10

1. Checking the signal on the monitor, gas parameter will adjust Neb gas - Add
gas - Neb gas at first
2. Torch position optimize
3. ExtractionLens,Lens-1,FocusLens optimize

Recommended Parameter Xt cone

Neb gas ; 0.6 to 0.8 L/min
Add Gas (He gas) ; 400 to 700 mL/min
Focus ; 10 to 13 v
L1 ; -1000 to -1300v
Extraction ; -100 to -150V

4. Save the setting parameter

35
How to create the
The world leader in serving science Experiment

This section highlight the how to create

the method and how to put together the
data using Ni alloy sample
Most important thing to create the method

The duration time on the sample list, it should not be shorter than
total time. please see the Create Experiment-8 with carefully

• Duration time > uptake time + wash out time + laser warm up +
ablation time + extra 5sec

!!If the duration time is not correct time, sample list won’t start!!

37
Create Experiment-1

1. Select the “Profile TRA”

2. Select the “default”

38
Create Experiment-2

1. Type the Uptake and Washout

2. Select the Analyte

39
Create Experiment-3

1. “Dwell time” and “Resolution” select ( Ni Sample )

Dwell time ; 15ms to 50ms

Resolution ; High Resolution is useful to separate from interference
peak and avoid to be aging the detector for counting matrix element

40
Create Experiment-4

1. Internal Standard – correction using matrix Element

Don’t fill in the Internal Standard page now – please Ignore -

41
Create Experiment-5

1. Isotope Ratio – this is also able to be appearing after finish analysis -

42
Create Experiment-6

1. Select the Calibration method

Fully Quant : there is certification standard concentration

Semi-quantified : If there is no certification of

concentration, you can use Semi-quantified method

Addition : Standard addition method is not using for LA-

ICP-MS

Internal Standard and equation elements should be “None”

43
Create Experiment-7
1. Create the ablate line and ablate setting

Sample Line ablation time

1000um/(20um/msec)=50sec

1000um

44
Create Experiment-8

1. Sample List Scan Patterns is same

number with Laser Pattern

2. Duration (Secs) UptakeTime + Laser WarmUp Time + Ablation + wash out Time
LA Warm-Up
Gas Blank 30sec Sample Ablation: Ablated Particles go through the torch 55sec

45
Create Experiment-9

1. Fully Quantitative Concentration

2. Save the experiment

3. Start the experiment

46
How to combine the Result-1
1. Go to “Acquisition Parameters” and Select the “Per analyte”

47
Compare with Spectra

1. choose the one sample spectra

2. click this icon,
3. other sample double click ,
you can see comparison for each spectra
